A thread for shallow prattlers

A number of us have been told off on other threads for being concerned about looking after our hair and ourselves while confined to home. Among other epithets we have been described as shallow and prattlers. I am quite unrepentantly a shallow prattler

I am certainly taking this crisis seriously, but I also believe that all work/worry and no play makes both Jack and Jacqueline dull people and that if we are to get through this current crisis mentally unscathed, we need to cultivate our capacity for fun and frivolity.

Todays news is that seclusion may be sometime away, which is a relief because although I had my hair cut last week, I am due to have my eye brows done in 10 days and I would like that doen first as well.

I am also considering reviewing my summer wardrobe. I dislike buying clothes online. They never fit, look awful and the quality is poor. I am wondering whether there are yet any summer clothes in the shops and whether I should try to get everything I may need now.

Now it is over to all the other shallow prattlers, what will you do to keep your morale up?

Happiyogi Mon 16-Mar-20 23:26:20

I knew I'd be right one day!

lemongrove Mon 16-Mar-20 23:27:45

Then you are in good company MissA grin since I am here too.
I shall just let my hair grow longer.....Mr L and me will have matching ponytails by August.
I do my own eyebrows and nails anyway, so no trips out needed.
I shall miss going out with friends for meals, no pubs either sadly. The upside is that the house will be cleaner than ever, the garden will look lovely and I will do even more reading.

MissAdventure Mon 16-Mar-20 23:32:05

Make the most of it, happiyogi someone will soon be along to tell you you're wrong. grin

Actually, that sounds quite idyllic to me, lemon. Not quite sure about a man with ponytail though.

My biggest worry is that I am within three weeks of my next visit to the hairdresser's. It's looking quite decent at the moment but it's baby-fine and sometime in the next week it will begin to outgrow its style and be just too long. After a couple of months I shall look like a white haired, straggly haired witch!! I know nobody's going to see me, but still ........ Never mind food, medicine and loo rolls - I need an immune hairdresser!

lemongrove Mon 16-Mar-20 23:36:43

Ah, but you will be a healthy white haired straggly haired witch Taichi at least.?

MissAdventure Mon 16-Mar-20 23:37:41

I'm quite lucky, really.
I already looked a wreck before all this. smile
Shouldn't be too difficult to maintain, I hope.

Ginny42 Mon 16-Mar-20 23:48:52

When I'm no longer in a rush to go anywhere I'm going to pamper myself and use all the stuff I've been bought and put in the cupboard. Face masks, lotions and potions. I'm going to luxuriate in the bath bombs and lash on the moisture creams.

Not decided whether to get the gel off my nails and give them a rest. I resolve not to lounge around every day in leisure wear and hope warmer days will allow us to wear summer dresses and tops.

As I only have myself to please I shall do just that when confined to barracks. I do intend to self-isolate in fact I've almost begun already to 'flatten the curve'.

Feelingmyage55 Tue 17-Mar-20 01:05:51

I am now inspired to go and buy face masks, waxing strips and fancy creams for my hands in order to be a shallow prattler. I have already ordered lots of extras for my hobbies from a major online store along with a 4000 piece jigsaw which is so complicated it will take 12 weeks to complete. Oh no maybe longer if I have no visitors coming in and doing a few pieces while I boil the kettle. The few pieces other folks do always seem to help me make major advances. See how very shallowly I am prattling? Imagine the risks of losing one piece of a jigsaw that size!!! There were no carrot seeds or green bean seeds in the garden centre today. I thought I could body swerve some veggie shopping by growing my own. Enough woman = stop prattling. Oh last thing - my neighbour and I are going to play tennis over the garden fence inspired by the Italians playing across their balconies. Goodnight, sleep tight.

Callistemon Tue 17-Mar-20 09:41:31

Good idea, I will order some jigsaws for DH who is pacing around like a caged animal already as it's raining and I have banned him from going to the supermarket.

It's going to be a long four months.

M0nica Tue 17-Mar-20 10:07:00

Well,I stacked up wit hair colour this morning, I am not letting this virus make me go grey. I should manage with cutting my fringe, but the back will get messy.

We were outside Waitrose when it opened and stocked up well. Still have the garden centre and DIY store to do and I will probably look in a local shop for some curtain fabric. I intend to redecorate eour bedroom over the next three months.

Clamp down is this weekend so we have time to plan and SHOP!

Boz Tue 17-Mar-20 11:18:56

There is little need to go out to shop unless you want to; you can get most things delivered to your door; even our meds are delivered to door.
My only concern is the health club. At the moment the pool is open as they are working on the basis of high temperatures everywhere and chlorine. A sauna is good, I would have thought.
I think a lot of young people, and the very sociable, will get "stir crazy"; thank God for the Internet.

Boz Tue 17-Mar-20 11:21:01

Talked too soon re; Internet. Signs of network failure as many working from home!

Dec46 Tue 17-Mar-20 11:31:34

hairdresser came this morning and I'm happy with much shorter cut than I usually have.Felt brave as not many people will be seeing me anyway.

Rufus2 Tue 17-Mar-20 11:42:10

Callistemon I thought you were going to say you've banned him from coming indoors out of the rain! grin

In answer to your question kitty I would let her come. I had mine in today. I told them it maybe the last time for a while and their faces fell. They rely on the income. I did hand them disposable gloves though grin.

I don't have the worry of hairdressers as I have no hair at the moment and I read that dark nail varnish protects the nails from chemo so have been doing hands and feet myself. Not sure I like the black though.

I am told microblading is the better option for eyebrows grannyactivist but as I don't have any of them either I have left it too late. At least I don't have to shave my legs or underarms any more.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 17-Mar-20 12:38:31

Lovely thread Monica, I have got back from having my eyebrows and face waxed and feel on top of the world. I wore my mask and gloves when I was out and got a few strange looks but don't care. Dentist to morrow and also look at having my cut in the next week. You have to feel good about yourself or you will probably sink into depression Also going out with Mr Barmey this afternoon, about 4.30 when its quiet for a coffee. Things like this keep me going.

Callistemon Tue 17-Mar-20 20:33:21

Guess who won, Rufus?

He needed his packet of porridge. There was just one packet left on the shelf though.

mrswoo Tue 17-Mar-20 21:43:50

In the past week I’ve been to the dentist, been to the hairdressers, treated my feet to lots of buffing and lotions and potions and slathered on moisturiser which gives you a gentle tan......

.....And all for a holiday to Cyprus that has now been cancelled. ?

mrswoo Tue 17-Mar-20 21:46:38

Forgot to say, a bit off topic, but if anyone is looking for loo rolls try a petrol station shop. Our local one had tons of them while all the nearby supermarkets had none.

Ginny42 Wed 18-Mar-20 08:45:38

Thought I'd share with my fashion conscious friends that I've just discovered by accident if you turn your Marigolds inside out they look like surgical gloves and are very tough. Wouldn't attract a second glance in the supermarket.

They can be doused in bleach and that's how I made the discovery.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Mar-20 09:21:23

I am off to the beauty salon today, I have made the decision to have the gel taken off of my fingers and toes (haven't been bare for over 11 years). I know I will cry when I have to tell the young lady who I have seen every other week for all that time that I will not be going for the foreseeable future, I do not think that the salon will survive this flipping virus but our health is more important than my nails.

On the upside I shall do a Boots online shop for many nail pampering products and varnish

We may be self isolating from Friday, but I intend to emerge at the other end like a butterfly from a chrysalis. ???

henetha Wed 18-Mar-20 10:20:03

I think I must be a shallow prattler because someone on GN told me a while ago to get back to my knitting. I hate knitting!
Anyway, I'm going to the post office today regardless.
Also, because my Avon lady retired recently I've been busy searching in shops and online for new kinds of cosmetics, shampoos etc. And I've really enjoyed it.... how shallow is that! I'm quite glad she retired now. It's given me a whole new mission in my shallow life.

Boz Wed 18-Mar-20 10:49:22

Really, really shallow. Gutted because I've cancelled weekly hairdo. I am quite capable of blow-drying my hair - just choose to indulge myself. Have kept the Root-do in April in place. Not being able to go to the h/dresssers is going to be hard for a lot of women.
Also, fretting about late delivery of a jumper that I have no intention of wearing until Easter (If there is one) which is ultra pathetic.
Spent my J.Lewis vouchers on new make-up.
Thinking of watching Frozen 2 for a bit of escapism.

Canalboatgranma Wed 18-Mar-20 11:00:50

Grannygravy, I had my shellac gel taken off on Monday as, like you, I couldn't stand to see the unsightly growth. I have had a go at painting my nails, let's hope I can improve over the next week's as they look pretty bad at the moment.

Callistemon Wed 18-Mar-20 11:04:19

Frozen 2 you are desperate, Boz!

Actually, I have to confess, having taken young DGD to see it at the cinema, I quite enjoyed it blush
Only don't tell anyone.
Not as good as the first one, though.
