A thread for shallow prattlers

A number of us have been told off on other threads for being concerned about looking after our hair and ourselves while confined to home. Among other epithets we have been described as shallow and prattlers. I am quite unrepentantly a shallow prattler

I am certainly taking this crisis seriously, but I also believe that all work/worry and no play makes both Jack and Jacqueline dull people and that if we are to get through this current crisis mentally unscathed, we need to cultivate our capacity for fun and frivolity.

Todays news is that seclusion may be sometime away, which is a relief because although I had my hair cut last week, I am due to have my eye brows done in 10 days and I would like that doen first as well.

I am also considering reviewing my summer wardrobe. I dislike buying clothes online. They never fit, look awful and the quality is poor. I am wondering whether there are yet any summer clothes in the shops and whether I should try to get everything I may need now.

Now it is over to all the other shallow prattlers, what will you do to keep your morale up?

Latest update!!! I am showered, full makeup (worthy of a posh night out), best expensive jeans, White Company Cashmere sweater and scarf.

This is my last foray into the outside world for a while......I am doing it in style grin

Sounds good! GrannyGravy envy

GrandpaGravy has just handed me a mask and sterile latex gloves!!! Not so cool but mask necessary as I am asthmatic, not sure how he thinks I can have the gel removed from nails whilst wearing gloves confused

I hope we can survive 12+ weeks grin

Escaped to have my nails done, which now match my jumper, (Crew sale), full makeup and new jeans and ankle boots. A feeble attempt to persuade the Isolation Police that I am not in the vulnerable group.
Also bought essentials: light bulbs, Marigolds and paracetamol, and enjoyed cheery conversations with other escapees about panic buying, which none of us do.

I am delaying going into purdah until Monday. This morning we went to our other shopping town to buy in Sainsburies what we could not find in Waitrose yesterday. While there we bought our Easter Eggs. One must remember the essentials in life!!

As a true sign of how shallow I am and what a prattler, now the initial shock has passed over, I am getting into the flow and almost have a little buzz of excitement about it all. This afternoon I am off to the Garden Centre.

I have been round the house and garden and listed anything that we could do during our house arrest. Not just DIY and repair job, but possible projects and so on. As a result we are off to B&Q tomorrow for paint and DIY materials and I am off to buy curtain fabric.

My Tai Chi instructor rang to say he is investigating classes online. Our parish priest has directed us to online mass from another church in our deanery, so that will give Sunday morning its usual punctuation.

I watched a po-faced medic telling us that there was no need to wear masks, as the illness is spread by touch - in which case why do we need to keep 2 metres apart, no one has arms that long! Then she added, unless someone sneezes over you! The real (hidden) reason for this clip was to stop people buying hospital masks and therefore limiting the supply for the hospitals . Point taken. But there are lots of mask patterns online and I intend to go through my stash of fabric and make myself the most fetching mask I can manage and a suitably masculine one for DH.

The mask will also ensure I do not touch my face when shopping until I have got home and washed my hands.

Monica A part of our family business is supplying protective clothing, from basic face masks to top of the range Chemical/Hazard suits and masks. Our AC made sure we have a box of "heavy duty" face masks in all cars along with anti-bac wipes (not just family but all our employees have been issued with the same).

I have now got bare finger/toe nails, I cried when I told my young therapist I had to cancel all appointments as did she, they are under the impression that they will be forced to close very soon (I gave her a bigger than usual tip). Will keep in touch by text.

Boots have come out on top as I have just placed an order for nail care products. grin

In that case Monica I shall look out for you in Waitrose, with you both wearing rather unusual masks.?

DSIL says he has a comedy false beard which he could wear
Across the bridge of his nose, so look out for a Brian Blessed lookalike with a very high beard.

Is there an emoji for 'giggle'?

Boz grin

Good shallow prattling there, I think!

rafichagran Wed 18-Mar-20 19:17:10

Brilliant thread. I am joining the Prattlers now. Had my eyebrows threaded after work. Having my hair done Saturday and treated myself to a lovely candle I wanted for ages.

I know the above sounds frivolous but it gives me a sense of normality. I work in a area where I cannot work from home.

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 19:24:33

Good for you! hmm I've just lost my business.

Nico97 Wed 18-Mar-20 19:29:14

Hair done today - looks wonderful too ! Off to town tomorrow to stock up on a couple of boxes of hair colour, makeup essentials and such. Afterwards will head off and collect the decorating items we need to tackle the hall, stairs and landing - a big job but one that will be well worth it.

DH stocked up the wine supply a few days ago so all in all, I think we're set wine grin

Marydoll Wed 18-Mar-20 19:35:28

growstuff , that is so awful for you. sad
This thread must grate on you.

Feelingmyage55 Wed 18-Mar-20 21:06:11

growstuff I am sorry, we must sound awful. Really we are just using black humour to help ourselves get by. Can you think of a plan for a new or renewed business when this is over.

Feelingmyage55 Wed 18-Mar-20 21:07:26

marydoll not the point of the thread but have you seen that there are going to be live-streamed masses and online church services?

M0nica Wed 18-Mar-20 21:24:12

growstuff I am so sorry to hear your news, but please do not think that because this is a lighter thread that those responding to it are not also taking the current crisis very seriously. In fact, I think all of us have been contributing to other threads in ways that shows our concern.

Today I heard that DS and family are in lockdown as the family of DGS's best friend has the virus. In that family one member has underlying medical problems. My DDiL has rheumatoid arthritis and DGS is, what in the past, would have been described as a 'delicate' child. Every bug he gets gets critical and he has had numerous hospital stays. We recently realised he had actually gone a whole year without hospitalisation.

Nevertheless it is my experience that in every tragedy somehow a little lightness will always show through, like streaks of sunshine through cloud. This thread is no more than a streak of sunshine in a very grey and frightening world.

Callistemon Wed 18-Mar-20 22:32:41

growstuff I am very sorry to hear that news and hope that you can get the help you need quickly.

Nico97 Wed 18-Mar-20 22:43:02

Really sorry to hear your news Growstuff. I posted what I thought was following on from Rafichagran and didn't realise your post had popped on inbetween.
For you flowers
