This is not flippant but...

I have a question. I have started isolation because of age and am coping fine. I phoned my hairdresser yesterday to cancel my appointment next week, just a normal cut and blow. She is on her own in a small room and quickly said that she has done everything she can to keep the salon safe. She has 2 children at school. I had to say to keep the appointment open and I would see nearer to the date

So what do I do? I could whizz down on my bike, park in a rack and walk 5 minutes through an old arcade. I am fully prepared not to go, have ordered some wide headbands to hide my scruffy hair and can hack my own fringe. Poor lass, she obviously has rent to pay. I am in a dither, everyone else has been so good eg royal mail man kept his distance and signed for me

I am still thinking its a bit too close that contact between her and me. What would you do?

Craftyone I agree. We must have a plan or we would become very lethargic.

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 17:09:41

anything but alexa grin. I`ve been very busy all day, very satisfying including woodwork outside. I enjoyed the whole day. A few things in my diary for the following day, every day, something to get up for

Alexa Wed 18-Mar-20 10:32:58

With a name like Craftyone I'd imagine you would be able to learn to cut and do your own hair!

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 10:28:58

craftyone I'm afraid I'm never short of things to do on my own. Follow a FutureLearn course, take up a craft, gardening, sorting out my cupboards, sorting out my huge number of computer files, learning how to set up a blog/website, reading all the books on my shelves … the list goes on. Every time I start to make a "to do" list it just gets longer.

There are people who can't get out much, don't have much money and live on their own. Somehow most of them cope - and are even quite happy.

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 10:23:34

Iam64 Get some tweezers! I've never had my eyebrows "done" and they're not bushy.

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 10:21:05

It is also about killing time and doing positive things rather than sitting and worrying. Obviously weather dependent but personally I am out and about as much as possible, only in my garden which has a high wall all around, a private small oasis. The seasons are grounding and so is watching out for a bumblebee, any bumblebee to please come and fertilise my many blueberry bushes which are almost in full flower. I might sit and just watch and listen to the birds, much better than gloomy stuff. Indoors can wait, I have weeks

I enjoyed MOnica's Puritan or Cavalier comparison. I love the silver hair look on friends but after two years of it on myself, I decided to return to having in coloured. It was done a week ago and will now have to do for months I expect. So, it's silver roots and an over long fringe, plus busy eye brows for me, for the forseeable future.

Gingster Wed 18-Mar-20 08:20:29

Hear hear MOnica 👍

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 08:14:37

MOnica There are small businesses worried sick and other people losing their jobs. Others are having to adapt to a totally new way of working and finding ways of caring for their families. Some people are falling ill - and others, I'm afraid are dying. There are local groups working their socks off to help the most vulnerable. In the grand scheme of things, an obsession with appearance is very low down on my list of priorities. It's nothing to do with being a Puritan or Cavalier.

BlueSapphire Wed 18-Mar-20 08:09:45

I have an appointment in two weeks and will be cancelling. DD has banned me from going! I will cut my own fringe and just put up with the grey coming through. No-one is going to see me anyway.

M0nica Wed 18-Mar-20 08:04:53

....oh and cavaliers had wonderful hair.

M0nica Wed 18-Mar-20 08:03:57

I have decided to cancel my next hair appointment, but book one for 13 weeks hence when we all come out of purdah and all make a rush for the hair salons, ditto my beautician, for eyebrow tint and shape and electrolysis.

Not too worried about hair colour, first I home colour and secondly I coloured my hair last week and that is usually good for at least 3 and sometimes 4 months. My hair is heavily grey round the edges but the crown of my head has very few grey hairs, so no roots problem.

A propos Mamie's post. There have been several others like this. None of them ever explain why keeping some balance in life and caring about one's appearance, precludes one from being concerned about the current crisis and about other people.

It's the old Puritans and Cavaliers conundrum. Well, I am an irrepressible cavalier!

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 07:37:06

That should be "complimented". Why does auto correct think it knows better than I do? angry

growstuff Wed 18-Mar-20 07:34:44

Go grey! grin I decided to go au naturel a few months ago. The worst bit is when the first couple of inches are showing through, but nobody's going to see if we're all self-isolating.

I use purple shampoo and conditioner, which tones down the brassiness of previous hair dye and highlights the grey. My hair is now all sorts of different colours - it seems I have natural highlights. It hasn't been cut for months either and is now a sort of shoulder length bob.

For the first time in years, somebody even complemented me on the colour of my hair last week. She said she'd thought I'd had it dyed and highlighted.

The only thing which bothers me is my fringe, so I've bought some proper scissors, instead of relying on the kitchen scissors! hmm

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 07:04:04

annep1, that made me laugh, we will become a nation of worzel gummidge look alikes. I cancelled that hairband order from china. Sorry china but I will not be buying anything from that country any more

easy and nice, cut an old t shirt if you don`t have fabric

I’ve had to book 3 slots in advance as one of the hairdressers will be on maternity leave, next appointment is in 4 weeks time as I managed to go last week, as we should have been on holiday.

Grey roots!! We need some good ideas to disguise them, do semi permanent colours take on Grey hair?

As we have health issues I think I will have to cancel but as the hairdressers is in the Gym the problem might be solved for me, if the Gym closes.

annep1 Wed 18-Mar-20 05:31:03

I won't go. Even if it is deep cleaned every day people could infect each other. Not worth the risk imo.
I don't agree with Mammie's attitude. How we look affects how we feel. I will buy some hair bands though. And hair thinning scissors and have a go.
It's easier if you have long hair to cope, but very short styles require frequent visits. I usually go every four weeks. What on earth are we all going to look like?

craftyone Wed 18-Mar-20 05:22:04

For fretting dhs, get some clippers online. I did my husbands hair for many years, a number 2 all over. It was so easy. I have never ever had my nails done, I am always too busy in the garden, cleaning etc. I just keep them short and clean and use oil when I remember

Is this flippant? no I don`t think so, I am being extra careful with my food. I have had gerd for very many years, I cut out garlic months ago because I ran out of home grown and have not had gerd since. At 5 pm yesterday I had some hm squash soup made with long red pepper with garlic and ginger from a jar. The flipping gerd came back, hence I am up early. The 2 jars are going out and I have put the soup down the sink. No more garlic again, and I am not sure about the red pepper either

Another flippant thing, clothes while isolating myself, social distancing is the real term but I call it isolating because that is what it is. Being braless is lovely, I couldn`t care less about having pancakes against my chest. No-one to see me, no more feeling trussed up like a chicken.

paddyanne Wed 18-Mar-20 00:51:36

Ithought I'd do my roots myself .alas no root touch up to be found ,might have to be the hairdresser after all

arosebyanyothername Tue 17-Mar-20 23:38:25

I had an appointment for Thursday and have cancelled with a heavy heart. What’s the point of self isolating and then go to a salon? I’ll try to tidy it up a bit if it gets too straggly.

What makes me laugh is DH fretting about cancelling his trip to the barbers, I could do his too if he’s desperate and if we’re home for the foreseeable who’s going to notice?

eazybee Tue 17-Mar-20 18:02:15

I am having my nails done tomorrow: the salon owner has put up a sign saying if you feel ill please cancel, but if you are healthy you are welcome. There are only two people at one time having nails done and generally they seem younger than me. I shall then go and buy some meat from the butcher's and back home.

craftyone Tue 17-Mar-20 17:50:25

I will cope, yes alone in the house and so what if my hair gets longer and looks thinner and horrible. Btw I am cancelling my hairband order, 4 pretty bands, they flipping well come from china. No way, I will make some and maybe look up how to make a war turban, the sort that women used to wear about the house. Lol, I might make an old fashioned wrap over apron as well, properly look the part

Gwenisgreat1 Tue 17-Mar-20 17:28:45

Have to admit, I am going to have my hair cut tomorrow - I obviously will not be able to go for 12 weeks, so Ill start off with it cut!

Rosina Tue 17-Mar-20 17:25:43

Went to my hairdresser this morning. They are sanitising chairs, basins, worktops etc after every customer, and not using a brush to get hair off shoulders, but blowing it away with a hairdryer. She works so hard to keep going; evidently yesterday, due to cancellations, she took less than was needed to pay staff wages. What a dilemma this is; the Times doctor has written an article today saying he would happily swap face masks for hot water, soap and a clean towel and if we wash our hands as soon as we get in, keep our distance and don't touch our faces this is the very best advice for staying safe. However, this doesn't answer whether we should keep appointments or not - I just don't know!

Mammie Tue 17-Mar-20 17:24:27

BlueBelle

I give up and will not be coming on the site anymore many selfish stupid irresponsible people who care more about a bloody hair cut than the lives of others! Bye and good luck!
