Looks like we are in lockdown. Thoughts?

Labaik Wed 25-Mar-20 19:45:54

No; these were the sort of youths that looked in you in a way that made you worry that they might spit at you as they rode past. They were very unpleasant.

Daisymae Wed 25-Mar-20 18:22:42

TBH you can't really blame the young, they feel invincible. This is such a different world than it was a month ago. Takes time to adjust.

Labaik Wed 25-Mar-20 17:58:28

Yes; my son and DIL are keen cyclists too. We also had three horrible teenage lads cycle past us today; I heard one of them say 'why have to stay in on a day like this'. I wish the local police had been around; people are contacting them to advise them where to go to disperse groups of youngsters. If only they could get the test up and running to find out who has had the virus. Now would be an ideal time to get every single pothole fixed!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 25-Mar-20 17:52:36

That has always been a real problem with us for years labaik

I can’t be too critical as DS is a keen cyclist but it is impossible to hear them coming up behind unless they ring their bell loudly. I am constantly jumping out of my skin.

Labaik Wed 25-Mar-20 17:47:44

Walking down a quiet country lane on our once a day dog walk we are constantly having to look around for bikes coming up behind us at speed. We do keep the dog on a lead but worry that she'll hear a bike before we do and veer towards it. I just wish they would ring a bell or something.

I was of course thinking of cycling on roads being more dangerous than walking on pavements.

Well at the moment there are hardly any cars! But apart from that experienced cyclists are hardly likely to stop cycling as it is allowed ...and the whole idea of stopping because of some vague idea that they might be more likely to end up in A&E seems pretty spurious. However , if people who are not experienced/good cyclists suddenly start leaping on bikes that might be a different matter. [hmmm]

Well I believe it. I know as a fact that my area has no more ventilators available (unless someone unfortunately died and therefore vacated one today.) I know it’s a fact because my daughter told me today, she’s a doctor and gets all relevant information through.
If that’s the case here, it will quickly be the same in other areas.

growstuff Tue 24-Mar-20 20:32:19

GrannyLaine No, I wouldn't, but in this case I don't think it's wrong. Health professionals and other media sources are claiming the same thing. I read somewhere that large empty office blocks are being converted for ICU units. There have been nine deaths, one an 18 year old, in my local hospital. It certainly brings it home. The UK's death rate is rising faster than any other country. We're two weeks behind Italy since identification of the first victim and, already, on target to have a higher number of deaths in two weeks than Italy currently has.

GrannyLaine Tue 24-Mar-20 20:24:05

Would you say that the Daily Mail is the best, most accurate and scholarly source of information .....?

EllanVannin Tue 24-Mar-20 20:15:21

According to the Daily Mail, England is going to run out of ICU beds by the 6th of April except for--------North East, North West and Yorkshire.
The study had been done well before Boris gave his speech about isolation and lockdown.

Callistemon Tue 24-Mar-20 20:03:00

We do have plans of action hence the modelling.

What they didn't predict absolutely was how utterly stupid and selfish people can be.

Callistemon Tue 24-Mar-20 20:00:46

I think the lockdown was scheduled slightly later than this but the peak was coming earlier than anticipated because people ignored the government advice and behaved irresponsibly and stupidly.

EllanVannin Tue 24-Mar-20 19:59:32

Oooooh, Larry Grayson's on--Shut that Door.grin

Daisymae Tue 24-Mar-20 19:58:46

I think that the lockdown is way too late. We will be seeing the consequences in a couple of weeks. People have been out and about because of the relaxed response of the government. Just last week Johnson told people that they should 'enjoy themselves'. India only has a few hundred cases yet they have lockdown. Bill Gates gave a talk 5 years ago about the threat of a pandemic. Everything he said has been proved to be correct, we were not ready, had no plan of action. Despite knowing that it was a question of when, not if it happened again.

EllanVannin Tue 24-Mar-20 19:50:28

I don't own a mobile phone.

maddyone Tue 24-Mar-20 19:47:58

Ah thank you Ooopsadaisy, well I won’t get one then, though I have received the general one giving the advice and website.

GrannyLaine Tue 24-Mar-20 19:12:03

I've had the gov.uk one too but my husband who is on Vodaphone hasn't

growstuff Tue 24-Mar-20 18:39:51

I've had one, which says: New rules in force now. You must stay at home. More info and exemptions at gov.uk/coronavirus. Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.

I'm not in the "shield" group, but in the group below that - under 70 but with health issues.

I assumed it was a generic text, being sent to most people.

Madgran77 Tue 24-Mar-20 18:34:08

Government has agreement with mobile providers to send text to everyone re following rules! I had one earlier

Lisagran Tue 24-Mar-20 18:31:51

A lot of people have had this text message today - I think everyone will get this one / general advice. Then there is the more specific message going out to those who are most vulnerable.

I have just been to my 98 year old mum with a dinner plated up and collected her washing. She is housebound and so frail. It's such a worry. But as I was leaving a van pulled up nearby and the driver jumped out to have a good old chat with another bloke. No social distancing. They obviously didn't live together.I was so furious.I now wish I'd said something.I will next time I see this happening.

anna7 Tue 24-Mar-20 17:48:34

My husband has received a text. He is 67 and very healthy and active. He does have (well managed) high blood pressure though so it must be that. We were both a bit surprised though. We have been staying in anyway apart from necessary shopping and dog walking. We will gave to stop that now although we both have very elderly mothers to see to so I'm not sure how thats going to work.

jacq10 Tue 24-Mar-20 17:46:13

I'm in the north of Scotland and received text message late this afternoon. A friend phoned this morning in a bit of a panic as she had received one and, of course, when she heard I hadn't received one that made her more anxious. The message just to let us know that new rules were in force now and gave a website address for more information. I suspect they were sent out in alphabetical order as she is D and I am R. I am not on any medication apart from painkillers (which I buy myself) for osteoarthritis in my hands and she is on medication for HBP but we got exactly the same message.

Callistemon Tue 24-Mar-20 17:39:17

Riverwalk yes I know, that's why I am wondering.

Riverwalk Tue 24-Mar-20 17:36:10

The letters/texts to isolate for 12 weeks are only going to those most seriously at risk e.g. transplant patients, certain cancer patients, and those with a serious immune deficiency.
