This gentleman is almost 100 and is walking 100 lengths of his garden to raise money for the NHS. He was hoping to raise £1000 but has now raised over 6 million pounds

I was emotional watching this and have donated via just giving. What an inspiration

merlogran, of course, a waste of resources on every level. I do wish some folks would have donated to either Captain Tom's appeal, or put a few quid in the box to help people in their own community .

I'm sorry but I think the cards are a waste of resources and man power.

65,000 birthday cards already received.

There was a plea not to burden the Post Office at this difficult time by sending him a card, but clearly that went unheard.

Just read in the Telegraph that 65,000 birthday cards already received. As another poster said, if all those had donated even £1 to charity, would really have been more use, and probably Tom would agree.
Of course, some would include cheques I’m sure. But I would worry that they would get missed amongst so many.

Wonderful and so inspiring. He is so modest about what he has achieved. ?

Rosalyn69 Sat 18-Apr-20 14:49:09

As has previously been said, he should get a knighthood just for cheering so many of us up. What a star. Among the constant torrent of bad news its lovely to see this gracious elderly gentleman. And if at all possible he should meet the Queen.

A wonderful gesture. As far as I know, the money is going to NHS charities, rather than into the ‘ gaping hole’ of the NHS, as it was called earlier, as I would hate crowdfunding to become a regular thing, replacing proper government funding.

He’s a gem.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Apr-20 10:21:03

I think he will become a beacon of hope and community cohesion for all in this Covid-19 hell.

He has definitely made his mark on the UK if not the world

His daughters and family must be so proud of this remarkable man.

I managed to donate this morning.

Great suggestion on our local Covid support group. Please don't overwhelm the Mail, or Cptn Tom with birthday cards, donate instead, even if you can only afford the cost of a card and a stamp

PayPal appeared to collapse on Thursday night as well, Iam.

I was advised to find another payment method so I waited until Friday morning and it was OK then.

Yes he’s great and an amazing inspiration - but he should stop walking now for his own health and to avoid people getting a bit tired of it all.

Captain Tom has helped me to be positive, he's an inspiration to us all. I hope more companies will make the PPE and provide it quickly. I am keeping to the guidelines, contacting family/friends/ people, I will do more.

A young girl has asked children to make 100 th birthday cards for him. She wants there to be 100 cards. At this rate he will get a lot more than that.

Another £7M into the pot in the last 12 hours . Incredible .

I’m so pleased he lives with his lovely family too. Every time I see him, especially when he’s doing the walks I just well up. Meeting the Queen would mean the world to him.

the Just giving page seems to have crashed.
I'll continue to try to donate. I hope he gets a knighthood, Now.
What a generation, his cheerful, articulate way of speaking reminds me of my dad.
