If so, how did you make it different?

I'm a bit down about it. I realise this is a very small problem but these strange times make small problems grow.

Dh was planning to cook a lovely meal, he's a very good cook but I'd rather have his company than him spending hours in the kitchen.

Dd and family will come and stand in the garden which will be nice/make me cry.

We wondered about getting our fire pit out but it's forecast rain.

We are both working full time from home and pottering about at weekends. My birthday is on a weekend.

What did you do? Do I sound selfish, I think I do.

We had our silver wedding anniversary. We had planned a lovely dinner, bed & breakfast at a country hotel and a wonderful holiday to follow in June. All abandoned. Husband made me a card out of A4 paper and a biro. We had a family meal as usual with our resident son and his fiancée. We shrugged it off - it doesn’t matter at all. As long as we have each other, we don’t need celebrations as such.

Mine was on Good Friday, my husband's was 5 days later. For mine, both sons were here - son no. 1 lives here. Son no. 2 lives alone, works from home, had seen nobody for weeks, so he came. We all sat outside, had an Indian takeaway. The grandchildren rang me. One of my friends left a card and present on the doorstep, and another one e-mailed me an Amozon gift voucher.

Yes, my birthday was at the beginning of April. Not bothered I couldn't celebrate it - far more serious things going on in the World than my birthday.
Will be taken out for a nice meal when we are back to normal again - could be some time.

Mine was at the beginning of April. It was our first day out of quarantine after having had all the symptoms. We went to Morrisons. Was a massive treatgrin

MissAdventure Sun 26-Apr-20 20:35:10

Mine is tomorrow, and it'll be much the same as every other year, and I don't mind too much.

It's my ruby wedding in a fortnight - we should have been away for it - but we won't be doing anything. There are worse things happening all over the world.

It’s a busy time for birthdays from end of March to end of May. Our newest grandson was born 2 days into lockdown and we won’t be seeing him until it’s over - which is hard- my daughter had her 32nd last week. The children made banners and breakfast in bed and did no school work !! ?. My hubby’s 60th is in a few days and the garden party we were planning is just being postponed until goodness knows when. We have a few others and then our other grand son who will be 7 on 24th May. I think we’ve just decided postponing is the best way. May be for hubby’s until next year and we will have a joint 60th. Who knows ! As long as we are all safe and well that’s all that matters. ?

My ' corner shop ' is literally an M & S food store. Just at closing time on the evening before I went in and found one of their beautiful cakes reduced from £13.00 to £1.95, so I bought it! There's only myself and DS, who has learning difficulties, so next day, for our morning coffee, I set the table really nicely and put a candle on the cake, and we ' celebrated'
We also took pictures to email to DD's and DGC. One DD face timed in the afternoon. My other DD sent a Hotel Chocolat goodie bag.

My aunt will be 94 next week and she will be on her own. I will miss celebrating with her, as will all the family.

LynneH Sun 26-Apr-20 20:51:32

I did. My husband cooked me a lovely meal, and I had a drinks party - via Zoom - with friends. Easiest part I have ever organised. Because of lockdown, my present only arrived two weeks later, but it didn’t matter.

My Dad has had his 81st stood in the garden and sung happy birthday. That night for the clap for NHS the whole close sung to him. But I still worry about him.
My beautiful granddaughter had her 1st birthday as well. I WhatsApp and saw her playing and loved the photos.

You do sound a tad selfish as we are all in the same boat. My friend's wedding was cancelled. Please be grateful for your dear family and your health. And enjoy your birthday whatever you decide to do. Be inventive.

It’s my husband’s 60th in a couple of weeks....certainly not what we planned, but he’s saying that he’ll celebrate it ‘properly’ next year and consider himself still 59...it’s sad though. I’m going to bake him a cake and try and do nice things, but it won’t be the same.

I had my birthday at the beginning of April.
We set up an afternoon tea using a cake stand and Vintage China and a tablecloth that belonged to my gran in our summerhouse.
I had a glass of fizz or 2 and a zoom conference / party with family and friends.
I had a lovely day ?

NanaDH Sun 26-Apr-20 21:00:08

DH birthday on 30 th of April, he is complaining it won’t be the same without the family. But it is a week day! it is a school night! If not for CV19. We would do it somewhen else! The reality is I finish work after 4pm, he is unlikely to be home from work till 6 pm we will have a meal open a bottle and see what turns up on the doorstep as we are key workers. Keeping away from ALL OUR FAMILY who are furloughed or vulnerable is for everybody’s benefit. It is one day apart so We can have many more together in the future love everyone always.

It was my birthday a few days ago, I would normally be away enjoying a few days at the Yorkshire Coast, but obviously we could not do that this year. My daughters and Grand-daughters all wished me a Happy Birthday via Messenger facetime, otherwise it was just the same as usual, carried on like any other Day. DH did say that he would take me out for an 'Official Birthday' to make up for it once we are free of the Lockdown restrictions, which obviously could be quite some time yet. I have a holiday booked in the Uk for September, but even that may have to be transfered and re-booked for next year, if ever at all.

Yes I had my birthday a couple of weeks ago - To cheer myself up I ordered myself some flowers. Unfortunately no visitors but nothing new. Feel so depressed reading about people missing their families, makes you feel so alone. Fortunately I have a partner, suppose I'm luckier than some.

SueDonim Sun 26-Apr-20 21:19:49

It was my dh’s birthday yesterday. It has been bookended by two deaths so it wasn’t exactly joyful. The best bit was that we spent much of the day talking online to our four DC and the GC and that was lovely. Today, it’s over, behind us and tomorrow is another day. flowers

Tangerine Sun 26-Apr-20 21:21:56

Yes. A lot of friends made a virtual fuss of me and I had a few presents through the post. I still managed to have a good day.
For lunch I made one of my favourite meals.

Seefah Sun 26-Apr-20 21:25:08

I hope you have a lovely birthday Marion. ?Happy birthday Fiorentina ? That is a bit sad anaemia you’re mum being 80 - can you not sit outside in the garden together but apart ? 2 m. Maybe not if it’s raining ☔️

georgia101 Sun 26-Apr-20 21:28:30

My birthday was lovely because people made a real effort to contact me via phone and internet and I spent a lot of the day laughing with them. Presents and cards were few, but they weren't important. It was the love that was shown that made my day special. My husband and I also celebrated our Golden Wedding anniversary in lockdown. Not how it should have been, but it's better to look after our loved ones now by not risking anyone getting this awful disease than to have a few drinks together. We intend to celebrate with family later on when it's safe to do so.

I had my birthday 2 days ago. My son ordered me an indian takeaway with delivery. Fabulous. Set meal for 2 lasted 2 meals and still some left. Even better

vegansrock Sun 26-Apr-20 21:54:02

My Ohs birthday today. We should have been beside an Italian lake. Instead we spent a sunny day in the garden. Youngest DS dropped off a card and bottle of fizz and GS waved from his buggy. We had a socially distanced glass of fizz with a neighbour outside over the fence. Youngest DD dropped a card and present off. We had a Zoom party with 8 different family households from home and abroad, One GD played Happy Birthday on the piano we all sang, others read poems or played some music. We all raised a toast. OH said he enjoyed it more than having to entertain everyone in our house.

Lin1959 Sun 26-Apr-20 21:54:03

My Birthday was last Monday, I cooked a special meal for myself and hubby (we usually go out for a slap up meal) that contained lots of calories lol. Had a lovely video from some of my Grandchildren singing and lots of cards, it was a lovely day. The majority of my Grandchildren have had/will have their birthdays in lockdown, I have been ordering their cards online and sending them an Amazon voucher to spend online, just feeling sad that I wont be able to share their birthdays with them, I'm sure they wont be impressed if I sent them a video of me singing Happy Birthday lol

Gwenisgreat1 Sun 26-Apr-20 21:58:30

It was my granddaughter's 4th birthday in March, she was disappointed not to have a party, so she had a "glitter" party for her "my little pony"
My birthday, too, will be at the weekend, it will be much like any other, I will probably be on facetime to my grandchildren. If I want a cake, or special meal, it will be up to me to do the cooking!! DH wil not cook!!

I had my birthday last Thursday. I spent the morning with messages and phone calls from Dc and a video call with grandsons. I met 2 friends in a park and they left me a plant to pick up - social distancing and shouting but fun.
In the evening I had a zoom call with all english family ( Dc and 3Dgc in nz) with cake ,candle and persecco and they had same at theirs. An enjoyable day but I don’t like a lot of fuss.
NZ Ds 40th birthday is tomorrow and for a present they can go from level 4 lockdown to level 3! His son had his 2nd birthday on the 12th and we watched him open his present via skype ( luckily bought before lockdown).
