Would you use the App?

The App is currently being trialed in the Isle of Wight. It needs a certain number of people to sign up to be any use. So would you use it? Can you use it? You need a smart phone. Or are you one of those who think it might be an invasion of privacy? I'm not sure about it and if you stay in any form of isolation it won't be useful or necessary.

Yes if it’s going to help lessen amounts of deaths and our isolation.

Septimia Tue 05-May-20 09:24:44

We're being told that it will be as safe as possible and not invade our privacy - although the system knows your postcode you get a random identity. Anyone being informed that they've been in contact with someone with the virus isn't told who that person is.

Or so I understand. I would check again before installing the app.

However, if it's going to help us get some 'normality' back and is good for the wider community then, yes, I'd use it.

I would definitely install it because it can help reduce infections. Another way that technology can help fight the virus.

Missfoodlove Tue 05-May-20 09:30:59

I would use it but I think it’s a very flawed system.

yggdrasil Tue 05-May-20 09:58:40

No I wouldn't use it. It is a very inaccurate measure of who might have been in contact. Plus it is a step too far in government data collection

vampirequeen Tue 05-May-20 10:06:23

It's an invasion of privacy. I'd still use it but I'd delete it as soon as it was OK to. I suppose it's a swings and roundabouts situation. I don't want to be tracked but on the other hand I need to do all I can to protect others. This seems the only way atm so I'll download it.

We all think that the government knows too much about us. So how come they have got things like the "vulnerable list" wrong with people left off etc.?
I am happy to share data as I've nothing to hide.

Luckygirl Tue 05-May-20 10:29:43

I would download it - exceptional times, so we have to be flexible.

Teetime Tue 05-May-20 10:31:31

Yes of course!!!!

GillT57 Tue 05-May-20 10:35:53

Nope. Too late, not efficient unless the majority use it and more importantly, Cummings and Cambridge Analytica.

westendgirl Tue 05-May-20 10:35:58

Let's hope it works.
It does seem a pity that we could not have used the one developed for EU . The two different systems, could apparently cause problems with those wanting or needing to travel to Europe , according to an item on the Today programme.

MiniMoon Tue 05-May-20 10:42:35

I most certainly would.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 05-May-20 10:44:12

We are traced multiple times a day as it is if we have a smartphone/ use online shopping / google etc.

I will do anything which helps the UK get working safely and defeats this flipping virus

Charleygirl5 Tue 05-May-20 10:46:04

Yes I would although at present I am rarely leaving my front door.

henetha Tue 05-May-20 10:46:31

Yes I would, providing we can definitely know that it's safe.
Anything which helps is surely good.

Armynanny Tue 05-May-20 10:52:55

Yes I will use it. As for privacy- I haven’t got anything to hide so it doesn’t worry me. I am getting to the point where I’m fed up with having my life on hold so anything that will help I’m happy to go along with.

There was an interview on television the other day where a woman complained that the people on the Isle of Wight were being used as guinea pigs. It isn’t going to affect their health so what’s the issue?

rosie1959 Tue 05-May-20 10:54:52

Yes of course

Sunlover Tue 05-May-20 11:20:42

Yes. Nothing to hide and the more people who download it the better. I’ll try anything to help get us back out and about.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 05-May-20 11:22:36

Haven't got a smartphone.

BlueSky Tue 05-May-20 11:41:09

Yes I'm not doing anything dodgy I'm quite boring and predictable, not a social animal, so it might not be of much use!

Rosalyn69 Tue 05-May-20 11:48:45

Yes I would. Anything that just might help.

Oldwoman70 Tue 05-May-20 11:53:21

It isn't compulsory to use, I assume it can be deleted if someone no longer wants to use it.

Why do people automatically assume the government have evil intentions when all they are trying to do is track the virus and help save lives

Lucca Tue 05-May-20 11:55:25

Yes I definitely would. Anything which has a chance of preventing the spread of Covid 19 seems an obvious thing to do. I have no secrets.....well not that the government would be interested in!!

MaizieD Tue 05-May-20 11:57:49

If it's any help, this is an explanation of the app and how it works, by the Deputy Digital Editor of 'Wired' a web based magazine.

The government are being at pains to emphasise that your data is completely anonymised and you cannot be traced by it. Some people are not so sure:

You make your choice,really.

To those people who are saying 'I haven't done anything wrong'. It's all well and good now, but what if the government brought in a law that said no-one over 70 was allowed to leave their house and used tracking data from the app to enforce it, with a hefty instant fine for lawbreakers?

How,if you're over 70, would you feel about that?
