What do we a,l make of his speech . Do we still have to stay at home on lockdown or can I visit my children ? He hasn’t been specific are we still on lockdown ? it’s now stay alert not stay at home. All I want to know is can I visit my family I am 60 no health issues. Do we have to stay at home till June I’m confused.

From memory Washerwoman, Jacinda Ardern talked about a social bubble for childcare and to combat loneliness. Scotland and Belgium were considering whether or not it was safe for their respective countries to follow this example.

It should be obvious that any relaxation in the current restrictions will cause a rise in the rate of infection (r).

So it is utter madness to start to open up all areas of England without any reference to the local infection rates.

I think we have to stay in to see the end to this pandemic.

Beau1958 Mon 11-May-20 18:01:22

You are right Lemongrove I have decided to do just that I just didn’t want him to be confused by not being able to go near him but I think staying away completely isn’t great. To think this could go on for weeks or even months is very hard I have to see him.

I think most on here understand 'being sensible' but unfortunately there are many who don't. The bank holiday weekend proved that with parties and picnics. Social distancing not even being thought of.
The old saying of 'give them an inch and they'll take a mile' springs to mind.

lemongrove Mon 11-May-20 15:34:37

All work will be potentially unsafe until we have all received a vaccine......but we can’t stay wrapped in cotton wool for a year or more, the economy and country generally would fall apart.
All that can be done is as much social distancing as is humanly possible, or in some cases wear a mask.

lemongrove Mon 11-May-20 15:30:43

Use your own good common sense. If your grand child lives up the road (mine do) then go for a walk, knock on their door and stand back for 2 metres to have a chat with them before resuming your walk.We do this regularly, and often leave a little treat for them. It’s all about being sensible and staying apart, not by refusing to see them!

growstuff Mon 11-May-20 15:28:27

Meanwhile, millions of people will be forced back to work in potentially unsafe working environments. You wouldn't know about work, would you, JenniferEccles?

growstuff Mon 11-May-20 15:26:09

He doesn't motivate me Sparkling. I can't imagine what you see in him to motivate anybody. He bumbles incoherently and the more he says, the more I really, really can't stand him. In fact, I would go as far as to say that I really despise him.

Sparkling Mon 11-May-20 14:11:20

I think to say be aware is confusing, stay home I understand. Return to work, not enough information. I am glad we have Boris and his speeches, he motivates. I do think there was not enough detail in last nights.let’s hope it is clarified today.

Pippa000 Mon 11-May-20 14:04:54

I'm just one of those confused. As I live in Wales much of what Boris announced does not effect me. However if someone lives in England and works in Wales or the other way round there will be much confusion . Here, in Wales they are opening garden centres and recycling centres, but I can only drive for essential purposes as before, and short distances, so those visits are out of the question. I can understand the governments request not to use public transport, but having previously lived in Hampshire, and working in the City of London, using the train and underground was the only option, going by bike would be difficult to say the least!

All in all I will continue to walk the dog, several times a day if I like now, get my groceries delivered if I can eventually get a delivery slot, and pour another Gin grin

JenniferEccles Mon 11-May-20 13:39:36

We will learn more details later today.

Last night’s ten minute broadcast was only meant to be a brief outline of the government’s plans.

NotSpaghetti Mon 11-May-20 13:35:40

varian that has gone viral now!

I agree Oldbat1. I have heard three times today that Germany and South Korea have had a rise in cases since they relaxed the lockdown. Several other threads on the go are saying we should have followed Germanys examples, it seems they have not heard that they have rising numbers once again. I give up with it all as many people are just doing there own thing.

MawB Mon 11-May-20 13:32:13

Yes, so they will no doubt rein back on a temporary basis which is exactly what the staged “return” is predicated on.

Oldbat1 Mon 11-May-20 13:23:51

Germany have already announced an increase in cases! Uk would be well advised to sit back and wait and see.

Washerwoman Mon 11-May-20 13:19:14

But wasn't Nicola Sturgeon the one dangling the idea of social bubbles in front of us last week?.The media jumped all over that and certainly it raised hopes and expectations. Now it's nothing is going to change. Why did she even mention that one?

goldengirl Mon 11-May-20 12:05:09

I don't think he was clear enough. Too much chat and not enough fact. Nicola Sturgeon had the right approach - straight down the line and no waffle

I think Raab should be top of the list of those who are confused, unless somebody forgot to brief him hmm.

Beau1958 If he's old enough to understand that he must keep his distance from you, I don't see why you couldn't meet up somewhere, but keep apart. The danger is that he'll want a hug, which you really mustn't do. Maybe you could "chat" through a window, using sign language or pictures as a sort of game.

Beau1958 Mon 11-May-20 09:45:06

Thanks everyone for a bit more clarity I think I am so desperate to see my grandson I have virtually seen him every day since he was born he’s now two and I haven’t seen him for 2 months he’s only 10 minutes down the road it’s so so hard.

Daisymae Mon 11-May-20 09:00:59

You can visit them outside with social distancing. According to Raab in BBC breakfast. Whether you should is another matter.

Guineagirl Mon 11-May-20 08:24:53

I don’t think visiting other households will be allowed until Schools go back and some shops open. Long road ahead.

growstuff Mon 11-May-20 08:19:50

Unfortunately, many people are going to feel that they are forced back to work. It's predicted that Sunak will announce changes to the furlough scheme today (wonder why it wasn't announced yesterday with the main announcement hmm).

Some companies might not be able or unwilling to put safety measures in place. Others might not be able to accommodate flexi-working for parents with children still at home. There is unlikely to be enough public transport. Other companies will find that their market has gone and they could end up closing. One way or the other, there is going to be a new wave of redundancies and an increase in unemployment, leading to debt problems, evictions, etc.

Calendargirl Mon 11-May-20 07:59:39

Yes MawB. We are all keen for the type of work to begin that suits us, but not so keen when it doesn’t.

Our boiler conked out right at the start of lockdown. Our lovely plumber was able to access one, his usual supply depot shut down straightaway, and he came and fitted it, trying hard to observe social distancing.

Where would we have been if he and his supply had not worked? Without heat (and it was cold back then) and no hot water, that’s where.
