Hairdresser disaster

Had an appointment for the first time since lockdown with my usual hairdresser. Told they had Covid training and things would be different. However I walked in, on time to find the place full and was asked to wait. The 2 staff, one is the owner, were wearing visors, none of the 3 customers. It's a small place. I sat for a couple of minutes, decided it was unsafe and left, furious. The owner phoned later with explanations and the offer of another appointment when it is less busy, I told the owner that the environment felt unsafe. I have lost confidence in them. No one else I know who has had an appointment at other salons has had this experience. I am reluctant to give them a second chance with so much at stake at the moment.

I've decided to avoid the hairdresser for a few more months as I'm growing out my fringe. Was thinking about a change before lockdown so when they all closed that settled it for me. With the price increases, PPE, masks, and tension I'll just have longer hair until my fringe matches the length I want. I've always dyed my own hair anyway.

i went on Monday afternoon and I don't know who was most delighted, me or my hairdresser. There were only three clients, my hairdresser wore a visor,I brought my own mask and all went well. The price had not increased but we did converse. I don't think we were supposed too but it was just good to meet up again. There was hand sanitiser and I wore a sort of plastic apron.

Ten pounds increase on a wash cut and blow dry bringing it to £40.
Temperature taken at door And hand gel to be used.
Plastic disposal cape . Hairdresser wore a visor no mask required. Customer capacity cut by half and plastic screens between each chair. So happy I had it cut .

Suzywhoo this purple shampoo you mentioned sounds interesting, does it wash out completely. You say it enhances the colour, do you mean of your grey hair?
Would you be kind enough to explain a bit more about it. I might be interested in trying it. Thanks

Lucca, have you tried the wax strips you can buy? I use Boots own brand.

I'm having my hair cut a week tomorrow - can't wait to get rid of my mass of wild curls! On the phone she said I would have to wait outside until she was ready, there would be hand sanitizers, my temperature would be taken and I said I would wear a mask. I have every confidence in her - more than happy to pay a bit extra to cover her extras.

I have a mobile hairdresser sister who has been off her head worrying about all the PPE and keeping her clients safe. She has constantly been checking with the Hairdressing Federation whom have been having zoom meet ups etc. I believe they have to wear a visor but it is not compulsory for a mask as well. I can't begin to tell you how much stuff she has purchased some of which has to be thrown away (so much for the environment), she has decided that if the client is willing they can use their own towels but use a disposable cape. Her client list is extensive and she can only manage about a 1/4 of clients, sterilising in between each client has added another 20 mins as well as additional tools of the trade. If hairdressers are to do this right they will inevitably have to make considerable increases to their price list. This in addition to going round for 3 days doing patch tests for colour as required by her insurers has drained her before she started working again last week.
Luckily I had let my curly locks go grey a year or so ago, much against my families opinions, I am so thankful and the family like it now. I use one of the purple shampoos which enhance the colour, apparently it is quite a trendy colour now who'd have thought at 60 I would be on trend!

I too had a dry hair trim last weekend. From the Corona aspect everything was fine, I had texted .y hairdresser a few days before appointment to check if she had all the PPE which she had. I said I would wash my hair and wear my own mask.
The only problem was, the cut was not very good, she didn't dampen my hair so it looked like there were uneven bits all over the place.
Normally I would have colour as well which obviously is more costly, and I have decided not to use colour anymore. I just felt she didn't pay that much attention due to this.
When I came home my OH said I'd never had such a bad trim before, I may be on the lookout for a new hairdresser.

Agree with Hetty58 - and just because the Goverment does not make masks compulsory, this is no reason for a hairdresser to make the request themselves. Had my haircut the other day, and my hairdresser warned me when I phoned for appointment, that they insist on low numbers in salon, use of gel and compulsory masks. Had to hold it in place at the sides as he was cutting around ears. The responsible thing to do.

Am I the only person who isn't terribly concerned about all this. I went to my hairdressers this morning - they are opening 7 days a week at the moment to catch up - I walked straight in, I took a mask, but didn't wear it as I didn't have to, no one took my temperature, there was hand santiser at each station but I had used some in the car. I was offered coffee - which came in a paper cup instead of china. The staff were all wearing visors and I had my colour done. The
salon was pretty full and everyone very relaxed. A much nicer experience than I was anticipating.

I had my hair cut on Wednesday. I had to go next door because my usual hairdresser was still closed . I normally pay 8 pounds for a dry cut of course leaving extra for a tip., but this hairdresser said they had to wash all hair. I ended up paying 25 pounds and have very little hair. Was this fair do you think? I wont' be returning there, that's for sure.

I think the OP had been very unlucky and should steel herself to find another salon. Perhaps get a recommendation from a friend or neighbour? No one should have to feel uncomfortable at this time. You are the customer after all! I had my hair done on Friday and was very happy with everything. I’m sure that there are many salons complying with all the rules. Before Covid we chose the shops and businesses we patronised and we can still do so. I hope she will feel more confident after doing some research. Hairdressers are busy now but this won’t last once the backlog is cleared and those who haven’t looked after their clients will not get repeat business.

Hetty58 Sun 12-Jul-20 17:02:18

Janeea, yes you can blame them as they are responsible for ensuring social distancing on their premises.

jen53 Sun 12-Jul-20 16:57:44

I’m so sorry you were made to feel unsafe Daisymae. I think you did the right thing.
I’d been using the same mobile hairdresser for the last 34-years and when the go-ahead was given for appointments to be made again, I quickly texted her; a date was made for her to call round to cut and highlight my hair and cut my husband's.
After checking out guidance advice on line. I texted J to ask if I needed to prepare any areas and what PPE she would be providing. I was shocked when she said she would only be wearing a mask. When I asked about a visor, gloves etc she said that was only required in a salon - which I know isn’t true. The advice is that contact is made immediately before the appointment to check on health, temperatures are taken at the start of the session and that full PPE is worn including a visor. She replied that other people she had been attending had washed their own hair and she’d cut it in their gardens. I said she would need to be indoors at some point since she would be highlighting my hair.
Eventually, I said since we’d had a Covid-19 death in the family, we’d been taking the government guidance seriously and so wouldn’t feel happy compromising on health issues at this stage - especially since it sounded like she’d already been seeing people contrary to government ruling. I cancelled the appointment.
I feel really let down like you Daisymae. It’s clear some hairdressers are more professional than others. I have found a local salon which seems to tick all the boxes so I’m going there next week. Fingers crossed. ?? It’s just such a shame a 34-year-old relationship bit the dust.

Bluebell I had mine cut on Saturday. I had to unloop from my ear, and hold my mask in place while she cut, then do the same for the other ear. She wore PPE, cut ws a pound extra.

Ohmother Sun 12-Jul-20 16:42:08

Re the charge for PPE. A local salon wasn’t charging any extra as she said they had been given money from the government to cover such costs. Are we being ripped off if they charge?

BlueBelle Sun 12-Jul-20 16:15:03

It’s up to the Client if they want to wear a mask justwokeuo if I lived in a high Covid area I probably would but where I don’t feel unsafe
I work in a charity shop we started back last week they have spent £10,000 on their shops to bring them up to standard but there is no rule to wear a mask and no one is doing so of course if that rule comes into being then we all will but it’s up to the individual and apparently no one is so far

Clevedon Sun 12-Jul-20 16:07:58

Daisymae, Good on you. I'd have walked out too

Barmeyoldbat Sun 12-Jul-20 16:02:25

Not had my hair cut yet as I can't decide how I want it. Usually its a very short layered cut but needs doing every 4 weeks. I think there will be a second wave and lockdown so the thought is to have it cut to one length and then just grow it. Mind you I have been to the dentist.

Applegran Sun 12-Jul-20 15:58:13

I usually go to my hairdresser's home and she cuts my hair in her kitchen. I've known her a long time and have seen her sons growing up. I am still being very cautious and am wondering if she might cut my hair in the garden - much safer! Weather would be an issue of course. A friend of mine saw a podiatrist in someone's garden.

Tabbycat Sun 12-Jul-20 15:45:31

I had my hair cut and blow dried yesterday - marvellous, what a relief! So nice to feel a little more like me again!
It was appointment only and I was asked to wear a mask, arrive exactly on time, knock and wait ... grin
My stylist was wearing a head visor and mask and put on a disposable apron. She took my temperature on arrival and squirted hand gel into my hand for me. Then she put me in a disposable gown (a big plastic poncho). There was only one other stylist and her client in there - usually there are four chairs in use.
We discused what I wanted doing and then the stylist washed my hair at the backwash as usual, but she used a couple of disposable towels to wrap round to dry it and only one client was allowed at the sinks at a time. I wasn't offered a drink cafe.
She seemed to cut loads off - quite a pile on the floor!! Then she applied mousse and blow-dried my hair. I had to pay by card (contactless) and she added an extra £3 to pay for all the PPE and extra cleaning - the salon is being deep cleaned once a week. I had expected her to have put all her prices up or at least charge me for a re-style, as she had had to cut so much off, but she didn't!
Oh, and I was allowed to use the loo before I left - spotlessly clean as usual - but the usual bar of soap and hand-drier has been replaced with an automatic soap dispenser and a paper towel holder. She was cleaning down every surface I might of touched as I left ready for her next client.
I felt safer than I do on the 'big shop' in the supermarket. I've made another appointment for 6 weeks time.

I think I’ve been very fortunate. I had layered wavy unmanageable bobbed hair. Now it is longer and much easier to manage and I love it. So no hairdresser trauma for me,amazingly enough. I have dyed the greying roots myself. Hair happy !

justwokeup Sun 12-Jul-20 15:04:17

Very surprised at your hairdresser Mercedes. Mine has asked me to wear a mask, wait outside until called in, they wear full PPE. Couldn’t get an appt for a month. Small local hairdresser but always spot on. Very happy to wait.

Tweedle24 Sun 12-Jul-20 14:25:22

My hairdresser phoned me to make the appointment. She requires clients to wear masks, only one in at a time with 45 minutes between customers to allow her to clean between clients. She said she had bought washable gowns for herself and her clients as she thought they would be needed for quite a long time and would work out cheaper in the long run than buying disposables.

She is shampooing everyone as she says some of her customers do not wash their hair very often and she would rather work on clean hair. She is blow drying if requested, as there is only one client in at a time.

seacliff Sun 12-Jul-20 14:23:26

I went to a very small hairdressers, I was told beforehand that it was up to me if I wanted to wear a mask or not.

I went to the door at exact time of my appointment, which was locked so people could not just walk in. She had just finished cleaning down the chair and area. There was a small front room with just me and the stylist. Another client in a back room.

I was asked to use hand cleaner, and then directed to sit. I had the normal gown and a extra disposable cape on top. The hair dresser wore a mask. I had a dry cut, coming there with my hair damp.

She did a good cut, and I am keeping it all one length at the back, so if I need to grown it due to another lockdown, it will be ok. I paid by contactless card. I was very happy and felt quite safe.
