Pupils in England will no longer be advised against using face masks in schools after Boris Johnson made an 11th-hour U-turn days before students head back to the classroom.

In lockdown areas such as Greater Manchester, which have greater restrictions to stop the spread of the virus, wearing face coverings will become mandatory in school corridors where social distancing is more difficult.

In areas of England not subject to tighter restrictions, headteachers will have discretion over whether to require face masks, but the government will no longer advise against their use, a senior government source said.

Any more U turns and BoJo and Gavin Williamson will be in line for the Strictly glitterball.

I don't see why the spreaders ( schoolchildren ) have to wear masks as they'll spread it off their clothes anyway.
It's mainly the 60's onwards who should wear masks outside their homes, shops/buses/trains.

Scotland’s FM has already made a U turn after the schools being back for two weeks as of next week for High School pupils face coverings are mandatory.

In an ever changing situation surely it’s good to be flexible.

I don't understand your thinking. The virus is spread mainly from droplets from the nose and mouth, so of course teenagers should be encouraged to wear them, especially in school buses and in school, where social distancing will be impossible.

There is limited evidence that masks protect people, so the over 60s have no more need to wear them than anybody else.

In schools recently, it seems to have been a case of "Where Scotland leads, England follows".

Everyone should wear masks in crowded indoor situations eg public transport, shops, schools, pubs and restaurants and so on IMO.

The problem with children (and some adults) is that they need to be taught the technique of mask wearing.

When Nicola leads perhaps. But then that’s leadership.

Maybe because schools in Scotland have been back for two weeks already and schools in England do not go back till week?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 25-Aug-20 21:20:20

Oops * next week

Furret Tue 25-Aug-20 21:21:40

Not so. Leicester schools open tomorrow.

Teacheranne Tue 25-Aug-20 21:27:51

Another reason why Scotland have made mask wearing in certain areas of a secondary school could be that within two weeks of opening, a Dundee school has had a significant outbreak?

lemongrove Tue 25-Aug-20 21:47:08

I actually think it’s the right decision.Away from Covid ‘hot spots’ ( where it will be mandatory) I think that if teachers want to wear a visor, and pupils want to wear masks out of the classroom, where they mingle with lots of others, then they should do so.It ‘s whatever it takes to get the schools going again and children learning.

Lucca Tue 25-Aug-20 21:54:07

Agreed lemongrove (blimey!,). and much better than the reports of teachers being told they can’t wear masks etc. I do get cross with the “it hasn’t been proven that masks help” tack. It hasn’t been proven that they don’t so just wear the damn things and for goodness sake given people the power to enforce it !!
Rant over

lemongrove Tue 25-Aug-20 21:58:49

Yes, even if the science says it isn’t necessary, it’s about giving people confidence. As long as the schools all reopen it doesn’t matter.?

Maybe. But more likely because WHO advice on masks for children changed.

At least the U turn has been made before they return to school in England and not afterwards, unlike Scotland.

I just don't know why Boris made an announcement yesterday that children wouldn't have to wear masks at school. There was no need to say anything at that stage. As soon as he said it I knew there was a good chance he would be retracting it before long. The worrying thing is why didn't he?

EllanVannin Tue 25-Aug-20 22:24:53

Children wipe their nose's on their sleeves all the time. I've yet to see them with tissues in their pockets---so what use are masks when their overall habits are faulty ?
Watch a child when it sneezes ! Aren't they taught to blow/ wipe their nose's ?
What when they sneeze with their mask on ?

EllanVannin Tue 25-Aug-20 22:28:06

Masks or no masks it'll only be a matter of time before the schools will have to close again.

Lexisgranny Tue 25-Aug-20 22:44:41

There are several decisions made by the government that I feel uneasy about and I do have doubts about the competence of some of it’s members. However the world is still learning about the virus and it’s long term effects, and I would far rather see decisions altered when it is considered necessary than sticking with advice that has since been updated. Frankly I think there are supporters of both the main parties who would argue against any decisions/policies made by the other side principle. I believe that this often negates their point of view rather than strengthening and furthering it.

Lexisgranny Tue 25-Aug-20 22:47:33

Oops “on principle”

Ellianne Tue 25-Aug-20 22:47:54

I don't understand why the schools in lockdown areas are going to be opening in the first place, masks or no masks.

mcem Tue 25-Aug-20 22:53:43

Just to point out that the outbreak in Dundee's school for children with additional physical needs, 17 adults, 4 contacts in the community and only 2 pupils have tested positive.
