Students are not alone in their concerns about missing a family Christmas. The virus has no favourites.

Oh, I'd forgotten about the speech. For the first time ever, the Cambridges, Tindalls et al will be able to whisper, 'Shall we record it and watch it later?' shock

I’m just wondering if she’ll be wearing a Christmas onesie and a hat from a cracker for a more relaxed Christmas Day speech

I’m very surprised at the posts on this thread. A recent calculation showed that our contribution to the funding of the Royal family amounts to about £1.17 per person per year. Like everyone else I wish that there was no hardship in this country but feel that it’s a separate but extremely important issue. The Queen has served this country and it’s people so very well over the years. What was reported in the press is probably malicious gossip designed to sell papers. The Queen deserves our loyalty and our respect and thanks for her service. There will always be some who are very comfortably off. The aim should be to improve the circumstances of the less fortunate rather than snipe at the wealthy.,

I like your thinking Lancslass1. ER doesn’t need to hold on to the crown so tenaciously because in retirement she could continue to keep her promise to serve her country for the whole of her life.

Is it fair. not Os

annep1 Wed 30-Sept-20 18:07:52

Will be back tomorrow to see if anyone has answered ?

It would be good if you could stop for one minute and instead of picking fault actually take in the point that Paddyanne is making. There's nothing nasty in trying to get people to see how unjust it is to spend so much on one family while others are living in such poor conditions. Why do we do it? Os it fair? Perhaps someone could answer that ( although I have just been told questions arent allowed on GN. Quote from Eezybee " It's not a quiz show". )
Anyone willing to answer?

find out how most old folk live

According to a survey, about 4% of over 65s live in care homes, rising to 15% of those aged 85+.

So most old folk don't live like that.
I hope I never have to.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 30-Sept-20 15:13:53

Well none of us are likely to have exactly the Christmas and New Year we want, are we?

gillyjp Wed 30-Sept-20 15:11:19

I too am really not bothered about any of them to be honest' However over the years I have read some snippets about their lives away from the public glare. Rumour has it that Philip always likes to do a barbeque when they are on their holidays in one of their castles. The Queen apparently does the washing up after (as if!).

Maybe they will haul out the BBQ between them and Philip can rustle up bbq'd turkey legs or turkey kebabs. Just ordinary folk like the rest of us (NOT!)

paddyanne Wed 30-Sept-20 14:52:29

She could always move into a care home.pay extortionate fees and find out how most old folk live ...IF they can afford a care home after a lifetime of REAL work

I'd take an article like this with a barrel full of salt. Just some one stirring the pot. I really doubt the Queen gets furious over stuff like that.

Most likely some reporter was told about the bubble between two places thing and made up the rest from there.

Annaram1 Wed 30-Sept-20 14:38:06

I believe the queen can cook. Roast turkey and veg should be a doddle.
Happy Christmas Ma'am .

Lancslass1 Wed 30-Sept-20 13:27:39

Had the Queen retired at 65 and Prince Charles had taken over ,he would now have retired and we would have Prince William as King.
The Queen would be the Queen Grandmother and still "serve her Country " if she so wished .
She could have retired to Sandringham .
Am I the only person who thinks that would have been a good idea?
Although I don't feel sorry for him ,I imagine it must be frustrating for Prince Charles and indeed for Prince William.
My DH says the trouble is that they don't know what to do with him.

The queen may have to change her plans for a traditional Christmas.

Am I bothered? There are people who will be going to a food bank for their Christmas meal. So sad. ?

Lucca Nannan2 &Missiseff* with you!

Dareyouto Wed 30-Sept-20 13:12:01

Oh dearie me. Never mind. Move on. Get over it!

merlotgran Wed 30-Sept-20 13:05:17

Philip lived on Malta where they had no staff

Really?

We had staff and my father was a lowly Flt.Lt at the time. grin

Shelagh6 Wed 30-Sept-20 13:02:43

I don’t really care actually - they have plenty of servants who all miss every Christmas, every year and I am sure don’t get extra pay or very nice presents! They are notoriously mean!

Lexisgranny Wed 30-Sept-20 13:02:09

My grandchildren always preferred Popty Ping to the actual Welsh Word lemongrove it is so onomatopoeic, but as your question was directed to Callistemon I will leave the reply to her. You might enjoy the word another very descriptive Welsh word Cwtch, (pronounced kutch) which means a cuddle or a hug, something in short supply in these CV ridden days.

Love the idea of the Queen and rest of the royals spending the day in their PJ's, getting tipsy, over-eating, watching crappy programmes on TV, playing board games and/or Wii or Playstation games and joining the kids for fun with Xmas new toys...muddling by, just like the rest of us. This has already been a strange year and Christmas is likely to be weird for most people, including Her Majesty

Missiseff Wed 30-Sept-20 12:57:50

LUCCA & NANNAN2, - thumbs up emoji!

Shalene777 Wed 30-Sept-20 12:35:46

I'm sure she is not bothered in the slightest.
Before she was queen she and Philip lived on Malta where they had no staff and she had the life of a normal housewife and it is said to be the happiest time of her life.
She has also stated that her favourite dinner is a Shepherds pie and is renowned for shunning lavish dinners.
Looks like a lot of people swallow up the false stories because they are gullible.

Nannan2 Wed 30-Sept-20 12:06:29

I dont care much about the Queen having to have a 'lesser' christmas than usual-Theres so many others suffering much worse..im sure they can 'arrange' something. She maybe shouldn't be travelling all that way in a pandemic anyway, just for a week or 2?!
