Second wave sweeping Europe?

Depressing reading, but just in case anybody thought we were alone in the U.K. with our rise in cases and the new restrictions.
From The Guardian (sorry for the long cut and paste but there is so much detail, I couldn’t adequately summarise it)
France reported more than 40,000 new cases on two days this week, bringing its 14-day incidence rate to 521. Strict measures including a 9pm-6am curfew now cover two-thirds of the population.
Germany, whose infection rate was far lower than most EU countries this spring, is also seeing new daily cases surge alarmingly: from 5,250 a day to 13,500 this week for an incidence rate of 319 – a “very serious” rise, a senior official warned.
Spain, one of the worst affected during the first wave, is again facing crisis, becoming the first western European country to pass 1 million cases this week after recording 20,000 new infections on two consecutive days.
Italy, another country hit hard this spring, hit a new case record on Friday with 19,000 infections amid fears the pandemic is again spiralling out of control. With a 14-day incidence rate of 240 per 100,000, the situation is “dramatic”
The epidemic in Belgium, which suffered one of Europe’s highest per-capita death tolls this spring, is “out of control” and “the most dangerous in Europe”, the health minister has said, with a 14-day incidence rate of a startling 1,115.
The Czech Republic, lauded as a first wave success with infection rates among the lowest on the continent, is now among the highest with an even higher incidence rate of 1,210 Like Belgium, it seems headed for a new lockdown
Sweden, an international outlier with its anti-lockdown strategy, has introduced mandatory regional measures to combat a sudden surge that last week saw the number of new daily infections exceed 1,000 from barely 150 in early September.
Finland, with one of Europe’s lowest infection and death rates first time round, is one of few EU countries to be fighting this second wave effectively. Tough regional measures have reversed a surge in new cases over the past week, leaving the country’s 14-day incidence rate at 52 per 100,000 inhabitants

Not good is it? sad But perhaps Finland is pointing the way forward?

Saw a photo today of an airport in Greece absolutely packed solid with British tourists returning to UK after half term- unbelievable. And they won't have to self isolate, will they?

We aren't long for this world even in the best of times so during the worst of times some people choose to preserve life and comply while others choose to live as they see fit with a sense of entitlement- Some will survive and some will die, both as a direct result of someone else's decision- We are not only trying to protect ourselves from a virus, we are also protecting ourselves from each other-

I can't look at China, the geographical land, without being awed by its beauty- But I also can't look at its populace without seeing its ages old ignorance in play-

The only solution is a global embargo and travel ban against them until their gonvernment, as a whole, is willing to comply and be held accountable- And the only way that could happen would be for every other country to hold themselves accountable for agreeing to do shady business with them to begin with-

It would be wise for all other countries to embargo the US, as it's the country with just about the worst record.

To repeat:

And the only way that could happen would be for every other country to hold themselves accountable for agreeing to do shady business with them to begin with-

Meanwhile the Mail on Sunday has revealed that NHS staff are to be given the covid vaccine before Christmas !

The game changer we have been waiting for!

Frontline NHS staff could receive Covid-19 jabs within weeks under plans being drawn up to speed out the rollout of a vaccine.

Please note the use of the word "could" not "will".

locking down too late the first time
The Czech Republic locked down on the same day as us. Not just a lockdown but a curfew and borders closed.
Look at them now, one of the highest rates. It didn't work, did it.

No, it hasn't got one of the highest rates. Which figures are you using?

I couldn't agree more Re an embargo.
I've also been to china and agree that some parts are truly stunning.

I agree. And I am delighted for them. To be able to go to work everyday without fearing for their lives is great.

Added to that, The Netherlands - small country, very large number of cases.

Thank you MawB for sharing that information.
No country in Europe is doing well ( or anywhere else) no matter what they do.

Boris can't be blamed for ignorant people. I agree. BUT he can be blamed for:

* Locking down too late the first time.

* Wasting the 2 months notice we had and not preparing.

*For giving contracts to friends instead of using the expert NHS services we already have.

*For allowing his SPAD to publicly and very visibly to break the lockdown with zero consequences and therefore encourage others to do the same.

*To fail to support those who are out of work due to Covid.

*For opening schools and universities leading to a 2nd wave of infection.

Just because China is an authoritarian state doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t look at aspects of their lifestyle that are helping to control the virus.

growstuff Sun 25-Oct-20 14:48:38

It seems the latest analysis was on 9th October.

Here's the link:

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/weekending9october2020

I don't have time to read it properly and we know that the rate of deaths has increased significantly over the last two weeks.

growstuff Sun 25-Oct-20 14:43:57

The ONS data was updated on Thursday I think.

Ashcombe Sun 25-Oct-20 14:40:35

According to my diary, week 44 starts tomorrow. I shared the graph for information. Perhaps the ONS will update their information soon. It was posted on Twitter originally.

Just to add to what growstuff said, and maybe add a bit more detail:

Obviously it shows the peak in excess deaths in the spring of this year. It also shows that from week 37 to week 40, we were running at the high end of the average of the last five years.

Unfortunately it stops at week 40 and we are in week 43 now, so it doesn't show any of the recent increases in deaths, for the last 3 weeks. Obviously that also means that the impact of the latest rise in cases isn't being shown yet.

What do you think it shows *Namsnanny and Ashcombe?*

I wondered that too, but was too lazy to work out which week we're actually in now.

Deaths were increasing exponentially for a couple of weeks. I think the rise has levelled slightly, but we're still seeing exponential growth. There's not a lot that can be done about the people who are already infected, including those currently hospitalised, so that curve might start rising steeply again. In fact, I think it will, but I'm a bit busy and don't have the time to look back on historical ONS stats.

There's plenty could be done NOW to stop more people being infected and reaching the dizzy heights of spring/early summer.

Do we know the real figure of those who actually died from the virus, Growstuff ? Perhaps you can tell us.

No, I can't.

I don't really get why you think it's interesting. It's what I would expect. Am I missing something?

growstuff Sun 25-Oct-20 14:08:36

Ah! I see it's all ages. It shows that there was a huge peak, which I expect were Covid deaths, and that deaths are beginning to rise above yearly averages again. That's what I would expect from all the figures.

We know that up to now the second wave is affecting mainly 10-24 year olds, so I would expect the mortality rate to be lower than it was in the spring/late summer, so trying to prevent it spreading to more vulnerable people is crucial.

growstuff ... what do you think of *Ashcombes graph?

It doesn't have a key, so I'm not sure what it's showing.

The key runs along the bottom of the graph. The lines are in different colours for each year. The 2020 statistics are in red.
