Congratulations!! Whoever you are???

You used the forbidden phrase! I'm not anti vax, but.... ?

Well, I really am not. Anti-vax is just plain silly and illogical.

But people should be aware of contra-indications.

I'm waiting to hear if my Aunty has had hers.

She's 98 and is the only carer for her daughter in her 70's who suffers from Vascular Dementia.

Sadly my cousins children haven't been able to help much due to Covid. Two work in frontline NHS roles and the other lives in Australia.

Thankfully my Aunty is and always has been an amazing person. They do have some practical help from other family members but in Lockdown it's just the two of them so I really hope she is high up on the list.

Was looking forward to DH getting the jab, he's in the extremely vulnerable group so the isolation seems to have lasted forever but read recently that it hasn't been tested on people with reduced immunity so guess we have to wait a bit longer.

I was told not to get DD2 vaccinated for whooping cough because I had hay fever and she might have allergies too. She had whooping cough and it was dreadful. DD1 had a mild attack because they hadn’t decided the vaccine might cause problems so she got the jab. I think I’ll risk the vaccine.

I got vaccinated yesterday but it was for pneumonia! Just qualified this year.

Witzend Wed 09-Dec-20 11:34:21

Being a mere 71 and 73, dh and I will have to wait quite a while. I think we’ll be in category 5.

What I do wonder about, is the logistics of getting all those care home residents to wherever they’re giving the jabs, since the Pfizer one is apparently fussy about transport and storage. Especially if the people have dementia, which is bound to be quite a lot of them.

Having spent hundreds of hours over the years visiting relatives with dementia in care homes, I wouldn’t want to have to organise that myself! Some people can be decidedly stroppy and uncooperative, since they can’t understand or remember what is going on, or why.

It is well known that some people will have a severe allergic reaction to ANY vaccine jab.

There is nothing unusual about that. It happens every year with the flu jab.

It is simply recorded as a contraindication for future jabs.

Retired SRN, have volunteered to help in any way with the vaccine administration, locally. Not been asked my age! Would you be happy to have a jab from an 80 + ex nurse!?

Dh applied to volunteer to give the vaccine having given thousands over the years and being recently retired. He was told only under 70s were eligible - seems a waste really.

The allergic reaction is getting a mention on other threads too MaizieD. The two people in question were carrying epipens, so have had serious allergic reactions to other things in the past. I really hope this doesn't become another stick for the anti-vaxxers to beat us all with sad

You used the forbidden phrase! I'm not anti vax, but.... ?

Lucca Wed 09-Dec-20 11:20:55

Maizie. As I said earlier, both people were fine after receiving treatment and both had a history of allergies which I’d say most of us don’t.

Lucca Wed 09-Dec-20 11:19:13

I take my proverbial hat off to you Bijou! Will you be having the jab ?

MaizieD Wed 09-Dec-20 11:19:11

Aaaah

Be careful, ladies...

I'm not anti vax, BTW. I feel rather saddened by this news...

But; other very common and well used vaccines can produce allergic reactions, too

I notice that my name has been mentioned several times on this thread.
I am 97. Live alone. Am housebound because of severe osteoarthritis in both knees making walking difficult and painful. Have had cancer twice.
Manage with one hour’s help a day for cleaning etc. Do all my own cooking. No ready meals!
Haven’t been to the surgery for eighteen months. The District Nurse gave my flu jab and came to take blood and blood pressure. Only medication blood pressure tablet.
Since the beginning of March have only been out twice. My son(71) who lives in South Glostershire (I’m in Norfolk) came for the day and took me for a picnic in the car.
Now you all know! Thank goodness for the internet.

Gran Marie Thank you!

If they are so sure the vaccine is safe and will work, they should be giving it to front line NHS and transport staff, not those nearing the end of their life anyway.

Ellianne Wed 09-Dec-20 11:06:38

I agree there's no point going OTT about allergies, but how much insight will our GPs have on this issue? They will surely be the ones who need to advise us.
What if we have Antibiotic allergies, medication allergies, auto immune diseases, on chemo, unexplained reactions etc ... it all adds up to a bit of concern for some surely.

Have you seen this brilliant interview with someone who was vaccinated yesterday?

Penygirl Wed 09-Dec-20 10:58:52

My Mum (89 and not on gransnet) had a phone call from her surgery yesterday and will be having the vaccine next Tuesday in the local sports centre. Obviously different things happening in different areas.

Warning:
People with allergies are being advised not to have the Pfizer vaccine after 2 people have become ill after vaccination.
News story here:
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9034115/Allergy-risk-Pfizer-jab-TWO-patients-fall-ill-V-Day-rollout.html

“ The two NHS staff members, who are understood to have a “strong past history of allergic reactions” and carry an adrenaline auto injector with them, both recovered after receiving the appropriate treatment. ”

Let’s not go OTT

hugaby Wed 09-Dec-20 10:55:35

Not only did Margaret look so well, she was also able 'to hold her own' with all the interviews! I hope I look half as good when (if!) I get to her age! She did remarkably well and I hope she enjoys her 91st birthday next week.

Alegrias2 Wed 09-Dec-20 10:55:01

I would winifred01! Well done for volunteering!

Grannmarie Wed 09-Dec-20 10:53:22

Willjac 123, good luck for your procedure today.

I think that vulnerable people, who have been shielding, are group 5 on the UK list for the vaccine.
People over 65 are group 4.

So, maybe the vaccine is not too far away for you!

Yes, that’s why I wanted it.?

You aren’t old enough. I bet I’m older than you!

Ha ha
Everyone wanting to be the oldest!!

It reminds me of a friend who helps put on teas and trips for 'the old people'. One old woman said 'I'm 75, you know. It's lovely you do this for us old folk' and my friend said 'I'm 76'!
