Things are getting serious as France is because of covid is blocking lorry movements.

I saw that on twitter last night, GillT57

According to this thread there are now some 2,000 lorries parked up

According to reports on mumsnet, a group of Sikhs have organised blankets, hot drinks etc to be given to the drivers, plus a local church group are passing out flasks to volunteers to be filled with soup and taken to the captive drivers. Admirable, but shameful that it is necessary. Don't know what happens with loos and showers though.

Retiredwell Tue 22-Dec-20 15:05:57

What is totally disgusting is that many of those drivers caught up in this situation are going into their third night of sleeping in those vehicle cabs. Despite that, there seem to be no portaloos having been setup along the M20 on which many are parked up and no distribution of products to assist in personal hygiene etc.

This government along with Kent County county Council seem not to care one iota regarding the welfare of those drivers which is a disgrace that all in this country should loudly condemn and those responsible hounded from office.

Surely no group of workers in modern times have been knowingly treated as such and all with the world watching on. What sort of a society have we become when this is allowed to happen

Not that good WW

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Dec-20 13:46:50

What a shambles

Greeneyedgirl Tue 22-Dec-20 13:43:48

The lateral flow tests are inaccurate so wouldn’t be surprised if some countries don’t accept them. Can give completely false sense of security.

mokryna Tue 22-Dec-20 13:13:20

Why are the drivers being tested with the throat/nose with results 24/48 test now, so they will be ready to go when the boarders open.

As a lot of the trucks will actually be ‘foreign plated’ vehicles I wonder if their drivers will also be subject to a Covid test?
Or just the British drivers?

Yes everyone must be tested according to the television.

Ilovecheese Tue 22-Dec-20 11:59:07

As far as I could gather from the news it is all drivers. The virus cannot distinguish between nationalities. Why would it just be British drivers?

Alexa Tue 22-Dec-20 11:57:43

I love panic buying. I enjoy the aesthetic effect of my stacked tins of soups. But please, if you panic buy flour, dog kibble, or pasta, keep it in a container safe from the mouse.

I wanted to leave a little pile of edibles beside the hole in the floor and my sons would not allow this as the mouse's relations would invade my spare bedroom.

I see that the French are preparing to open the border, but those entering France from the U.K. must show that they have a negative covid result.

This should be obtained from the rapid test available, except that it isn’t and our test system which has never worked properly will be shown up for what it is.

Sarnia Tue 22-Dec-20 11:23:47

I try to buy British grown fruit and veg when possible. The supermarkets say they have enough for Christmas, providing people don't panic buy. That will be in one ear and out the other with some folk.

Can anyone explain why Tesco “British” Carrots are “grown in Spain” ?

Probably the same as these Tesco British carrots from Chernobyl.

Alexa Tue 22-Dec-20 11:19:11

Have the authorities provided plenty of portable toilet cabins at intervals of , say, ten lorries apart?

And also, a hot meals service at the roadside?

They should, as they have had plenty of warning regarding lorry transport in Kent after Brexit.

Oh
British in large print, Grown in Spain in small print!

Perhaps Spanish carrots are different.

I've thrown the packaging away and the British carrots are in the freezer now - perhaps that is why my vegetable delivery last week looked past its best.

PamelaJ1 Tue 22-Dec-20 09:55:02

oldwoman well it seems to be working on here.

Hetty58 Tue 22-Dec-20 09:26:03

Very true, Oldwoman - the media have a lot to answer for.

Oldwoman70 Tue 22-Dec-20 09:17:26

A vegetable supplier has been on local radio this morning. He said importers have ample supplies as they always order extra at this time of year due to Christmas. In addition they have also stock piled extra supplies in preparation for any Brexit or virus disruption. He also said that the vegetables traditional eaten with Christmas lunch are grown in UK.

Scaremongering by the media causes people to panic buy which results in shortages thereby it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy

Ellianne Tue 22-Dec-20 09:07:12

I have no idea, but am guessing it is to do with the variety of the carrots?
I'm off to check my bags of vegetables now.
By the way, how long do you leave them in the plastic bags?

Franbern Tue 22-Dec-20 09:06:15

Channel Tunnel

PamelaJ1 Tue 22-Dec-20 09:02:49

Doesn’t the government have a PR team?

All those poor lorry drivers stuck over here and they, if the news I watched this morning is true, are not being looked after very well.
Apart from the horrible time they are all having what a missed opportunity to show ourselves in a good light.

Hetty58 Tue 22-Dec-20 07:37:35

vegansrock a printer error, apparently (well according to folk on Twitter).

I would love to know Vegan. Have you asked them? Or sent your photo to any newspapers? Trades Description people?

I wonder how much else has that little "grown in" label discretely in one corner. If anything is grown abroad and only packaged in the UK it certainly shouldn't have the Red Tractor symbol. Should it?
