Macron has not caused the chaos at Harwich or Holyhead but the other European Union countries have refused entry to their own nationals. The UK are not holding them hostage. The countries causing this chaos must take responsibility. This chaos is EU made. They could allow their own nationals to come home and self isolate as we have done with our own.

growstuff Tue 22-Dec-20 18:02:02

Anyway, Macron is allowing French nationals to re-enter the country after a negative test.

Just announced:

"France is expected to reopen its border with the UK but only to its own nationals, French residents and professionals such as truck drivers, all of whom will have to provide a recent negative test, France’s public broadcaster has reported."

Sounds like a responsible leader. I'm sure you would agree GrannyGravy.

Macron is doing absolutely nothing to repatriate French Citizens, he has caused the chaos he should take responsibility for it!

No, he hasn't caused the chaos, especially not in Harwich or Holyhead.

The European Commission has said they want to see freight flowing again as soon as possible and the borders to open to allow freight. They cannot order anything because each country can make its own decisions about its borders (who knew?)

This mess is Macrons mess, he has closed the French borders.

It is being reported on Twitter that the EU has ordered the borders to be reopened, not sure how true that is.

Yup, Macron’s mess alright.Hope the French lorry drivers sleeping for days in their cabs realise it’s not the UK stopping them leaving!
Sprouts and many veg are grown in England, we are not all going to get scurvy either if we can’t get hold of a Spanish citrus fruit for a week.
Doom mongering is social media’s favourite occupation.....’it’s being so cheerful as keeps them going’ as my late MIL used to say.

Macron, it could be argued is exercising a form of tier 4 lockdown, to try and prevent the new variant from entering France. It is entirely within his prerogative and as I have previously said he is exercising French sovereignty.

Oranges are not the only fruit!?

This will make the brexiters annoyed

Guy Verhofstadt
@guyverhofstadt

We forgot what borders look like.
Some thought they would remain open with or without the EU.
They will now start to understand what leaving the EU really means...

He is exercising French sovereignty. You know, the concept that you don’t apparently have as a member of the EU.

Ironic isn’t it?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Dec-20 16:19:38

Apparently when hundreds of truck drivers were stuck in snow in Germany they were provided with hot food and drinks as well as the necessary facilities etc

As you say retiredwell what sort of country have we become.

trisher Tue 22-Dec-20 16:14:09

Isn't Macron doing what all the Brexiteers wanted us to do (and said we couldn't while we were in the EU) exercising control over his country's borders?

Those drivers, a percentage from European countries, are on British soil. It is, therefore, the obligation of this government and nation to care for the welfare of those drivers while they are trapped in a situation that makes it impossible for them to leave Britain or escape the queue to return to their homes.

Priti Patel the Home Secretary was interviewed on the major news channels at lunchtime but only spoke on the testing of those drivers and not once mentioning their welfare.

That I believe says it all about her and the attitude of the government which she is a senior member of.

Disgusting.

That was to MaizieD

GrannyGravy13 Tue 22-Dec-20 15:50:35

No hate , just pointing out that it was Macron that closed the border, which in turn has left hundreds of French and other EU hauliers stranded in the UK.

It was not the UK border force or the UK government, fact!!

Rosalyn69 Tue 22-Dec-20 15:45:17

I’m sure M. Macron has no ulterior motives.

I looked at the overhead photo from, I think it was Sky, earlier this morning and by enlarging it and doing a bit of counting I reckoned that there were well over 700 lorries there. The photos on the twitter thread are from later today and it claims that lorries are constantly arriving. 2,000 doesn't look unbelievable.

However, apparently the EU Commission has recommended that the blockade is lifted for freight haulage and for people trying to get home.
