'Universal vaccine' that can conquer all variants could be available within a year thanks to British scientists!

A universal vaccine that would work on all Covid-19 variants by targeting the core of the virus instead of just the spike protein could be available in as little as a year, researchers say.

British scientists at the University of Nottingham are developing a "universal” Covid-19 vaccine which, if successful, would end the need to keep tweaking existing jabs as the virus mutates.

We can all be proud of our scientists can`t we Gagajo.
That`s the best news weve had in a long long time.

Splendid news, GagaJo.

That would be wonderful. I have great admiration for scientists worldwide who have worked so hard to find a way to either beat this damn thing or protect us against it. Good news indeed.

GreyKnitter Sun 14-Feb-21 10:54:46

We seem to be leading the world in making huge strides towards a more normal future. Well done to all those involved.

Saw this on SkyNews last night. It’s fantastic news. And yes, I’m proud it’s been developed in Britain.

Reading your link Gagajo. I will be delighted whichever company discovers a variant proof vaccine. ??

Nannan2 Sun 14-Feb-21 11:09:54

Well done to them! Does this mean they will re- vaccinate all those already jabbed by then too, though?Hope so.Maybe they can make it compulsory by then as well.Providing its safe for them (re health problems) then i don't see why anyone would even consider refusing any of the covid vaccines, as the alternative for everyone, including themselves, doesn't bear thinking about.

Kandinsky Sun 14-Feb-21 11:23:30

Makes me wonder if it’s worth having my 1st vaccine due around May.
Especially if it doesn’t protect against all variants.

Read the link.

Yes yes, please have it! This wonderful development won't be available for months at least, and we all have to do what we can now to keep the prevalence of the current strains low. We can always be vaccinated again if we need it.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 14-Feb-21 11:35:46

If this passes though all stages of the trials it could/may be available as a booster in the Autumn which really would be good news for the entire world!!!

Alegrias1 Sun 14-Feb-21 11:35:46

Nice positive story GagaJo, thank you for posting it.

I read somewhere this morning that there has been an increase in young people who are interested in STEM careers, due to the good news about all the research into vaccines etc. Wouldn't that be a good thing?

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Feb-21 11:52:05

Kalu what was that totally unnecessary comment to Greyknitter all about ?

What did she say to make you think she HADN’T read the link?

Honestly why do posters get pounced on for making a perfectly reasonable remark?

BlueSky Sun 14-Feb-21 12:05:50

Great news GagaJo!

Sunlover Sun 14-Feb-21 12:10:31

?????

henetha Sun 14-Feb-21 12:14:29

Really great news at last. smile

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Feb-21 12:18:49

If successful this really would be the Holy Grail of treatments wouldn’t it?
Wonderful news indeed!

Grangrumpy Sun 14-Feb-21 12:19:43

That's amazing news. I'd not heard that. I'd certainly volunteer for trials if they need people and I live in Nottingham if that helps smile

sodapop Sun 14-Feb-21 12:25:19

Great news, treatment and vaccines will continue to evolve so it's important in the meantime to continue with the vaccines we do have.
Well done to all the scientific teams involved.

Kalu Sun 14-Feb-21 12:58:02

JenniferEccles. I have not pounced on any poster, simply highlighting to GreyKnitter part of the link explains the UK company Scancell and other companies, not just the UK who are working on developing this vaccine. Scancell have passed phase 1 and phase 11 however, they will need a wealthy investor willing to financially back to the sum of £millions to complete phase 111.

If GreyKnitter had indeed read the full link I am surprised at her post stating we are leading the world when the truth is other countries are ahead of us in their attempts to develop this vaccine.

Please do not tell me what I am allowed to post! There was no malice intended in my post but you appear to have made it your business to defend another poster unnecessarily.

I am delighted at the prospect of this vaccine arriving and greatly admire all scientists working tirelessly in their efforts to develop such a life changing vaccine for all.

Here we go!

Namsnanny Sun 14-Feb-21 13:03:31

Thank you GagaJo for a positive postsmile

Kalu Sun 14-Feb-21 13:11:55

Not a helpful post Namsnanny If we are not allowed to discuss the thread.

NotTooOld Sun 14-Feb-21 13:21:38

This is wonderful news. Just sad that the current vaccines have been overtaken by these new variants and have turned out not be the 'cavalry coming over the hill' that we hoped they would be - and that's not to take away from Pfizer, AstraZeneca and all the rest. Our scientists are amazing.
