'Universal vaccine' that can conquer all variants could be available within a year thanks to British scientists!

A universal vaccine that would work on all Covid-19 variants by targeting the core of the virus instead of just the spike protein could be available in as little as a year, researchers say.

British scientists at the University of Nottingham are developing a "universal” Covid-19 vaccine which, if successful, would end the need to keep tweaking existing jabs as the virus mutates.

Many “top” British scientists are working in the US.It’s not an insular world, despite what many may wish for.

Kalu What a rude, aggressive person you are. You were rude to greyknitter earlier in the thread - ordering her to read some link and now you’re making personal attacks on me. Dismissing my posts as puerile and accusing me of being ill mannered! Oh the irony. You need to calm down.

vegansrock Tue 16-Feb-21 07:16:30

If you went into a research lab in any university in the U.K. you would find scientists from many nations - France, Germany, China, you name it., you would also find collaboration and sharing of data with other scientists from all over the world , that’s why it’s inaccurate to claim “Brutish” scientists are responsible for this and that. as if they are all just British people working in isolation, THEY AREN’T ! Congratulations to them including the British ones.

Well done to those at the uni in Nottinghamshire and I hope they will send it over here to Australia too.

The UK was a world leader in genomics even when it was in the UK. Unfortunately, research has been hit by a drop in EU funding and difficulties in recruiting EU post-docs (coupled with new immigration restrictions generally), but it's still good. Covid has actually brought more funding into the area.

Why did you have to turn it into a jingoistic battle cry? hmm

And why do you have to label pride in our nation’s great achievement as ‘jingoistic’?

“Jingoism”?? It just makes a change to read something good about the UK as, on here especially, it’s constant bashing by those incapable of objectivity. The constant sneering and put downs and all because of loathing the present government and losing the referendum and various attempts to overturn the result.

It would be refreshing to read something positive for a change. If Labour were in government (heaven forbid) then the usual critics on here would be putting a completely different spin on matters.

Well said tickingbird. Good to see more people daring to stick their heads above the parapet. I’d almost given up hope!

Amazing after the years of bashing Britain by some bitter, self righteous people, they want to ban any positive comments and fall back to their default mode of misery and negativity.

Well said.

Why is it "Well said"?

Nobody wants to ban positive comments, but some people just can't cope with anything less than non-critical euphoria. They must be feeling very defensive about their heroes.

As a matter of interest, I know the Conservative Party has a bunch of people engaged in flooding social media with positive comments. Sometimes, they get it wrong and post the programming code by mistake or there are dozens of posts from allegedly different people with the exact same wording. I don't suppose you know anything about that.

Gransnet isn't exactly a hotbed of praise for the UK government though. No matter what Boris does or says is immediately criticised

My thoughts exactly Aveline

Maybe it would be if the government were more praiseworthy.

In any case, you seem to be confusing different concepts such as a government, a country and its people.

I know some of you just can't tolerate any criticism of the current government, but you really do need to take a deep breath and start being more realistic and analytic.

This virus will be with us for a very long time So vaccination will be a regular occurence

Kalu Mon 15-Feb-21 22:11:17

tickingbird Nothing whatsoever to to with your ridiculous accusations of Britain Bashing. What a puerile, ill mannered attitude to others who have proved you wrong, trying in vain to explain to you and others, this was not JUST a British venture as was clearly stated in the OP’s link!

Neither was it anything whatsoever to do with politics. I arrived at my conclusion simply by reading the facts offered to all.

Actually tickingbird it was hijacked by posters who didn't like being told that "doing the same as lots of other people" isn't the same as "leading the world".

The government, Brexit, the Labour party all in one post when the rest of us were talking about vaccines. One might suspect paranoia......

tickingbird Mon 15-Feb-21 18:43:32

No I’m pleased for the couple if they have a new baby to look forward to but I couldn’t face the teeth gnashing and apoplectic frenzy of the anti Royalists although it’s interesting to note they’re all over the place on that. If posters are critical of H & M the anti mob are out in force crying racism blah blah. If they’re praising and congratulating H & M, no doubt they’ll be sneering and making snide remarks re another freeloader......yawn. I’d rather watch tennis. Aussie Open’s on. G’Day Sheila.. I mean growstuff.

Growstuff It was hijacked by nationalistic silliness.

Actually it was hijacked by Tory baiters with an axe to grind.

Wrong!

Look back! Anyway, I thought you were going to look up some stuff about Royal babies.

How do you know whether I'm bitter and self-righteous? Just more gaslighting! It's all over the place.

That may well be Paddyanne but it’s not about praising Boris or his government. This thread has become political because some just can’t help but pour scorn on anyone that feels the UK have done well regarding the vaccine. It’s nothing to do with Boris and everything to do with the scientists. I’m off now as it always ends up the same. I haven’t checked if there’s any threads about H & M’s new baby announcement but I suspect there’ll be similar posts if there is.

Actually it started because one poster started linking the success of the vaccine with nationalistic support for GB (not sure what happened to Northern Ireland) and some have sneered at the people who dislike nationalism.

Many people will have had the Pfizer vaccine, which is nothing at all to do with the UK. I would also guess anything that some of the scientists and doctors involved in the development of the Oxford/AZ vaccine and its roll out aren't British. Astra Zeneca is a British/Swedish company with employees from all over the world. They also have access to all the research of scientists from all over the world.

If ever there were a pursuit which benefits from globalisation, it's science. The UK attracts some of the best scientists in the world and will hopefully continue to do so.

The countries of the UK have been able to vaccinate people so quickly because it has a national health service, which people will hopefully fight to save.

GreenGran78 Mon 15-Feb-21 17:35:24

Blinko. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Mafia are cashing in on the Covid vaccines. Illicit fortunes have already been made from the epidemic. There are already people offering vaccine doses on the internet. People who send off for them will probably be conned out of their money. Alternatively, and a very scary thought, the purchasers must be stupid enough to inject themselves with whatever random stuff that is sent to them.

Fennel Mon 15-Feb-21 17:16:33

What I DO think deserves praise is the organisation of the vaccination procedure in our area - Tyneside. It has been brilliant.
Does this vary from one part of the UK to another.?
