'Universal vaccine' that can conquer all variants could be available within a year thanks to British scientists!

A universal vaccine that would work on all Covid-19 variants by targeting the core of the virus instead of just the spike protein could be available in as little as a year, researchers say.

British scientists at the University of Nottingham are developing a "universal” Covid-19 vaccine which, if successful, would end the need to keep tweaking existing jabs as the virus mutates.

The UK was a world leader in genomics even when it was in the UK. Unfortunately, research has been hit by a drop in EU funding and difficulties in recruiting EU post-docs (coupled with new immigration restrictions generally), but it's still good. Covid has actually brought more funding into the area.

Why did you have to turn it into a jingoistic battle cry? hmm

Excellent news and we’ve passed the 15 million target for vaccinations today, all joyous stuff to end the weekend. Thank you GagaJo

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Feb-21 17:13:02

We lead in covid genomics, we are surging ahead of the lumbering EU with our fantastic vaccination rollout and now this latest wonderful news !

Great Britain indeed ?? !

I admit I was gobsmacked but as you can imagine there's a communication problem . She has an app on her phone which translates romanian to english and vice versa but not suitable for a complicated religious discussion!
All I said was that we didn't take that view.
She later told us that in her country the Mafia have taken over the provision of the vaccine and most people can't afford it.sad.

Kate54 Sun 14-Feb-21 15:54:46

And what did you tell your cleaning lady, Fennel?!

Millie22 Sun 14-Feb-21 15:31:38

We have some fantastic people in this country and most of them are scientists so yes it's good news.

Fennel Sun 14-Feb-21 15:23:40

We have a young Romanian woman as a cleaning lady. She's quite religious, close to RC. She told me that she and her friends here have religious discussions and believe it's near the time for the Messiah to return.

It’s such a good feeling Grannybags After over a year now of barely going out I am so looking forward to seeing family, especially GDs again.

GagaJo Sun 14-Feb-21 14:59:52

I agree Alegrias1. I am desperate to get the current vaccine. And I will be very pleased to get the universal vaccine too.

Grannybags Sun 14-Feb-21 13:53:45

That certainly is good news

I had my first vaccine yesterday as well Kalu and am still on a high!

Kalu Sun 14-Feb-21 13:34:21

As I had my first vaccine just yesterday I am over the moon and will not allow any despondency to enter my head. ? Onwards and upwards to an end result which will give all of us much peace of mind and steps towards returning to a more normal type lifestyle.

Alegrias1 Sun 14-Feb-21 13:28:16

I don't think we should be at all despondent about the vaccines we have today. They are still very effective indeed at dealing with the variants we have right now and despite all the hoo-ha about the South African variant, the existing vaccines won't just suddenly stop working for that mutation.

Things are going to get better over time, with new treatments and new vaccines. The more the merrier smile

NotTooOld Sun 14-Feb-21 13:21:38

This is wonderful news. Just sad that the current vaccines have been overtaken by these new variants and have turned out not be the 'cavalry coming over the hill' that we hoped they would be - and that's not to take away from Pfizer, AstraZeneca and all the rest. Our scientists are amazing.

Kalu Sun 14-Feb-21 13:11:55

Not a helpful post Namsnanny If we are not allowed to discuss the thread.

Namsnanny Sun 14-Feb-21 13:03:31

Thank you GagaJo for a positive postsmile

Namsnanny Sun 14-Feb-21 13:02:37

Here we go!

Kalu Sun 14-Feb-21 12:58:02

JenniferEccles. I have not pounced on any poster, simply highlighting to GreyKnitter part of the link explains the UK company Scancell and other companies, not just the UK who are working on developing this vaccine. Scancell have passed phase 1 and phase 11 however, they will need a wealthy investor willing to financially back to the sum of £millions to complete phase 111.

If GreyKnitter had indeed read the full link I am surprised at her post stating we are leading the world when the truth is other countries are ahead of us in their attempts to develop this vaccine.

Please do not tell me what I am allowed to post! There was no malice intended in my post but you appear to have made it your business to defend another poster unnecessarily.

I am delighted at the prospect of this vaccine arriving and greatly admire all scientists working tirelessly in their efforts to develop such a life changing vaccine for all.

sodapop Sun 14-Feb-21 12:25:19

Great news, treatment and vaccines will continue to evolve so it's important in the meantime to continue with the vaccines we do have.
Well done to all the scientific teams involved.

Grangrumpy Sun 14-Feb-21 12:19:43

That's amazing news. I'd not heard that. I'd certainly volunteer for trials if they need people and I live in Nottingham if that helps smile

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Feb-21 12:18:49

If successful this really would be the Holy Grail of treatments wouldn’t it?
Wonderful news indeed!

henetha Sun 14-Feb-21 12:14:29

Really great news at last. smile

Sunlover Sun 14-Feb-21 12:10:31

?????

BlueSky Sun 14-Feb-21 12:05:50

Great news GagaJo!

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Feb-21 11:52:05

Kalu what was that totally unnecessary comment to Greyknitter all about ?

What did she say to make you think she HADN’T read the link?

Honestly why do posters get pounced on for making a perfectly reasonable remark?

Alegrias1 Sun 14-Feb-21 11:35:46

Nice positive story GagaJo, thank you for posting it.

I read somewhere this morning that there has been an increase in young people who are interested in STEM careers, due to the good news about all the research into vaccines etc. Wouldn't that be a good thing?
