Astra Zeneca Vaccine

It has been reported recently that there is a link between the Astra Zeneca vaccine and blood clots in young women. The Guardian has reported that Marco Cavaleri, the EMA’s head of vaccines said ‘We can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine.....’ However Europe’s drug regulator has denied it has already established a causal connection between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare blood clotting syndrome.
I’m puzzled. The head of EMA says there’s a clear link, then it’s denied. What is going on?

I heard of people that stopped taking the malaria tablets when they got home and got sick (may have died: can’t remember, it was ages ago).

SueDonim Wed 07-Apr-21 16:51:28

Larium has been discontinued for malaria now, I believe, as it was so unsafe.

We took malaria tablets because my dh’s work was in countries where it was endemic and it was safer than getting ill. I was shocked when a UK embassy representative told us how many expats died or were very ill with malaria each year. It wasn’t a small number.

Yes Callistemon I saw that it was being rolled out in Wales and Scotland. I just hadn't realised before that it was coming there from the EU because the US isn't exporting it.

...and a friend of mine almost died from taking ibuprofen....

A lot of malaria tablets had awful side effects if I remember right. Put me off going to a country where I might need to take them. From memory larium (?) springs to mind. And yet plenty of people were happy to take them.

callistemon we used to get loads of vaccines in order to go and live in developing countries. Never had a reaction to any of them apart from an occasional sore arm. From memory, we had to get vaccines for typhoid, hepatitis A&B, Japanese encephalitis, Meningitis, Yellow Fever, TB (for dd2), rabies and we took malaria tablets, too!

Mamie the Moderna vaccine is now being rolled out in Wales.

Mamie

Interesting quote about the Moderna vaccine.
"The vaccine is coming from the company’s European supply chain, including Switzerland, Spain and France. The vaccine is also made in the U.S., but vaccine exports are currently not allowed."
We have had it in France since January and it is in vaccine centres with Pfizer. AZ has mostly been from GPs and pharmacies.

Surely that’s because the AZ vaccine doesn’t have to be kept at sub zero temperatures so it’s easier for surgeries and pharmacies to deal with.

I'm not sure about having a booster - having had a flu vaccine, pneumonia vaccine, two Covid vaccines, a booster and then probably a different flu vaccine in the autumn it feels like overload.

What do others think?

Franbern Wed 07-Apr-21 16:22:56

I was delighted to be offered my second dose of the vaccine, had it happily nearly two weeks ago. As did one of my daughters who was still having to shield (unhappily) due to the spleenectomy she had thirty years ago due to to her spleen killing off all her white platlets.
I used to have a friend who would read those long list of associated problems with any medication, whether prescribed or over-the-counter - and then imagine she was having most of those symptons.
Everything we take has some danger, even the food we consume.
Just so delighted I have now had both doses and will be more than happy to have a booster come the autumn.

So the GP with the white hair said don't have the second jab if you had adverse effects concerning blood clots. Fine by me.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 07-Apr-21 16:10:12

Well actually I thought one of them was balding at the side so that was quite a distraction?

suziewoozie Wed 07-Apr-21 15:59:52

Whitewavemark2

Good presser from the U.K. better than the EMA I thought for explanation, but of course the EMA are not a country so couldn’t speak for all countries in the EU.

Their hair was better?

Mustn’t be distracted by his hair, mustn’t be distracted by his hair - oh damn it, I am

Anyway it will no doubt be ages before young children get anywhere near being vaccinated.
Maybe a topic to be raised nearer that time. But it doesn't stop anyone who has reacted to any vaccine being scared.

Ellianne Wed 07-Apr-21 15:27:00

Ok if those figures imply rare growstuff that's fine. Maybe sitting in the ITP waiting room at The Royal London with other unfortunate vaccinated infants for follow up was what made the consultant say not so rare. Maybe he was just trying to placate worried mothers they are not alone and not at fault. Whatever.

All I'm saying is that if anyone on here has concerns over even the slightest risk in their case, then medical advice should be sought and they should think carefully. Suggestions like "get a grip" and being insane are not helpful. I have every sympathy with anyone feeling apprehensive.

growstuff Wed 07-Apr-21 15:08:20

"The condition has been reported in about 1 to 3 children out of every 100,000 after receiving the MMR vaccine, a rate that is significantly lower than reported after natural infection with these viruses, according to one review."

I would say that's rare.

Not on BBC one
On BBC news Channel 231

EllanVannin Wed 07-Apr-21 15:05:02

Apart from the A/Fib I was never told about what was causing it. A blood-clotting problem. I hope this conference gives an explanation on the symptoms.

Ellianne Wed 07-Apr-21 15:04:37

icanhandthemback The not so rare risk ofITP (blood clots) occurs in infants within 6 weeks of the MMR vaccination is what my DD was told.
I have no idea about autism

Shinamae Wed 07-Apr-21 14:59:50

Yes any minute now...

EllanVannin Wed 07-Apr-21 14:59:41

I was asked if I took blood thinners, but never asked why when I answered yes.

Cherrytree59 Wed 07-Apr-21 14:57:40

Think theres a BBC announcement today at 3pm with Van Tam re the AZ vaccine.
