Astra Zeneca Vaccine

It has been reported recently that there is a link between the Astra Zeneca vaccine and blood clots in young women. The Guardian has reported that Marco Cavaleri, the EMA’s head of vaccines said ‘We can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine.....’ However Europe’s drug regulator has denied it has already established a causal connection between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare blood clotting syndrome.
I’m puzzled. The head of EMA says there’s a clear link, then it’s denied. What is going on?

Kandinsky Tue 06-Apr-21 17:19:41

I don’t know what’s going on but I won’t be having my 2nd dose.

This ‘war’ has been going on from the start between the EU and the AZ vaccine. Obviously they need to investigate whether there’s really a link, in which case the younger groups (Under 50/40/30?) could be given another vaccine.

What an headache. I am hoping that the necessary data is forthcoming soon.

My 16 year old grandson has had his first AZ jab. My daughter is hoping the necessary information is available before his second is due in May.

What a decision!!

Many drugs have serious side effects for a few people. The risk of getting Covid is much greater than the small risk the vaccine has on very small number of people. Covid itself causes blood clots.

It sounds like they didn’t want him speaking out yet until everything was more confirmed.

I can certainly understand if this causes more skepticism among young people.

I suppose it seems now that it was the right decision for other countries to change the parameters of who received this specific vaccine

I think it was quite rare , one in several hundred thousand , and it’s not proven that the clots would happened without the vaccine

Are you a young woman?

Summerlove Tue 06-Apr-21 17:30:53

Rare or not, It’s obviously horrible for the people it happens to. Stating how rare it is comes across as pretty cold to those who are suffering from this side effect, and those who have died.

Lillie Tue 06-Apr-21 17:31:06

Does it mean clots in young women on the pill who have the AZ or generally?

Shinamae Tue 06-Apr-21 17:31:52

I have just had my second dose today

Cavaleri has said that there is a link with the vaccine.

The EMA have said that they haven't found a causal connection yet.

Which I read as Cavaleri saying that there is an increased risk of blood clotting in some people who have had the vaccine, but the EMA haven't identified yet why that could be. Use of the word "deny" is very inflammatory - suggests that they are trying to hide something.

I can't remember the exact numbers but say 20 people in the UK have had problems after getting the vaccine. Out of what, 15 million people vaccinated with AZ? That's a chance of 0.0001% of having a problem. Chance of getting COVID and dying in the UK, 0.2%.

I'll be lining up for my second dose when its time.

It’s not just the EU who have changed parameters though.

To call it an EU problem is pretty disingenuous

The fact that it has been noted as happening to young women, set me wondering if the clots had any correlation with taking oral contraceptives, which is already known as a risk factor in young women.

I mention this only because the patient in the next bed to me in coronary care recently, a young fit and healthy Italian student , with no previous health conditions, nearly died due to having a blood clot. She was told it was due to being on the Pill.

She collapsed at the airport on her way home to Italy and had been told that she would have died if it had happened mid air. She was a very lucky young woman.

I have multiple comorbidities and not surprisingly, spent three weeks in bed after a reaction to the AZ vaccine, but I know the risk for me of dying from Covid outweighs the risk of dying from a blood clot and I will certainly be having the second AZ dose in a few weeks time.

Kandinsky Tue 06-Apr-21 17:35:33

No I’m not a young woman - I’m 57.
But I just don’t trust the AZ vaccine anymore. What else could it cause that hasn’t been discovered yet?

GrannySomerset Tue 06-Apr-21 17:36:28

Similar figures were reported last week for the Pfizer jab. Am I too cynical in suspecting a political slant here - the AZ will be sold at cost, the other vaccines designed to make significant profit for shareholders.

Ilovecheese Tue 06-Apr-21 17:39:25

I think we need to follow the money here. Astra Zeneca are not making a profit from their vaccine. Other pharmaceutical companies stand to make huge profits. There are vested interests in play to encourage people to mistrust AZ and go for the other, more lucrative options.

Ilovecheese Tue 06-Apr-21 17:40:40

Crossed posts GrannySomerset

What else could the others vaccines cause, that we don't know about? We don't know, so have to make an informed choice.

Every drug carries a risk, we will never know until it happens to us.
I have ended up in hospital on a number of occasions, due to drug reactions, but some of us have no choice, but try them for a better quality of life or in some cases save our life!

It's a matter of considering the risks against the advantages of any medication.
I make sure I'm well informed, before making that decision.

Peasblossom Tue 06-Apr-21 17:42:48

I’m cynical too GrannySomerset. I think I’d be looking at a list of Pfizer shareholders🤫

Callistemon Tue 06-Apr-21 17:45:22

Marydoll I wondered if that may prove to be the link, too.

It is known that blood clots are one of the worrying symptoms of Covid too and I wondered how much research has been done regarding the susceptibility of patients who did develop such clots, or whether it is to do with enforced bed rest.

Yes I’m wondering that too GrannySomerset?!

I was not in any way trying to be inflammatory, the word was used because it describes what has happened. There is an apparent mismatch in what has been said by the different parties, which I find puzzling.

Greeneyedgirl Tue 06-Apr-21 18:07:05

Isn’t this a rare thrombosis associated with low blood platelets which they are investigating, which has occurred in a very small number of cases after the AZ vaccine?

I would far rather take my chance with a minuscule risk from the vaccine than the far bigger risk of dying from Covid. No pharmaceutical interventions are risk free. Being alive is dangerous!

BlueSky Tue 06-Apr-21 18:07:30

Yes Merydoll I was wondering too whether those women were on the Pill/HRT.
