Getting a divorce because of Covid!

I had a plumber in my house yesterday and he told me that he and his wife are getting divorced because he believes that Covid is a government conspiracy and she doesn't. They are in their 40s and had been together for twenty years - but he will not compromise. Refuses to wear a mask, will not and says he never will have the vaccine, is convinced that the government is trying to kill us! I am a bit sceptical about the dangers, but not foolhardy. Seems tragic to end a marriage because of this. I was quite shocked - he has always struck me as a very sensible young man.

I saw some of the earlier pics Galaxy, but, you’re right, not only were those very few people tarnishing everyone else there, but some of the later behaviour was appalling.

This doesn't mean we must accept and never argue or discuss any idea someone puts forward no matter how daft, dangerous or indefensible it may be.
Wholeheartedly agree M0nica.

M0nica Sun 25-Apr-21 18:51:01

I really don't know when it became acceptable practice to ridicule people who express a different opinion, or not the 'accepted' opinion.

This doesn't mean we must accept and never argue or discuss any idea someone puts forward no matter how daft, dangerous or indefensible it may be. I refuse to treat someone who believes the earth is flat, with the same seriousness and respect that I would accord a Jehovah's Witness, or a Corbynista

Conspiracy theorists and COVID denier/anti vaxxers are on a par with flat earthers.

I tend to think that people who wear yellow stars arent very nice people at all just woke up. That's what some of the protesters were wearing. I think it's fine to disagree and even ridicule people who hold a different opinion, I think that's part of democracy. I am happy for anyone to ridicule any of my opinions, that's part of free speech.

justwokeup Sun 25-Apr-21 15:58:30

Sorry crossed with the 'anti-vaccine' bit of your last post.

justwokeup Sun 25-Apr-21 15:56:44

DaisyL, you say your plumber is a very nice man who 'believes that Covid is a government conspiracy'. We don't know exactly what he means by that - maybe he's not a 'Covid denier' or 'anti-vaccine' but someone who thinks that governments are using Covid as a means to control populations? Then the 10,000ish anti-lockdown protesters in London yesterday, most of whom also looked very nice ordinary, unmasked people, might agree with him.
I really don't know when it became acceptable practice to ridicule people who express a different opinion, or not the 'accepted' opinion. It happens all the time on the news channels to the extent that nothing they say is impartial. For example, years ago Prince Charles was ridiculed for being a 'tree hugger' and has since been proved to have a valid concerns about the environment.
Whatever the differences between your plumber and his wife, and she most probably would have a slightly different explanation, it's unlikely he deserved a tongue-lashing from Gransnet for being a conspiracy theorist. Also if you and he agreed that he didn't need to wear a mask then, it might be foolish, or wrong according to the government, but don't we always say 'your house, your rules'?

Savvy Sun 25-Apr-21 15:14:40

His views on covid were probably the straw that broke the camels back. I can't say I blame her for getting rid.

Glenco Sun 25-Apr-21 14:40:51

Redhead56, "People are shallow making petty excuses to quit a relationship. I would not have s workman in the house without a mask either."
You say he wouldn't be in your house without a mask. I would say the wife probably doesn't want him in her house if he won't wear a mask when out, nor take any precautions. I think it's a very valid reason, but I daresay there are other issues anyway - like not caring about the other person......

DaisyL Sun 25-Apr-21 10:35:13

To be fair he was worried that the vaccine itself was either unsafe or poisonous - to be fair I wasn't really listening at that point. He does have an exemption from wearing a mask - don't know why. To be fair I am a bit of a hoverer - I am a bit sceptical about the doom and gloom we hear. Of course it can be a very serious illness but the three people I know who have died with Covid have all had very serious health issues. All the other people I know who have had it - including an 88 year old with cancer - have recovered well. I have to take a Lateral Flow Test twice a week (for volunteer work) and I don't hug people or get too close to people in public places, but I'm not too worried about masks in well ventilated places. Even in my hairdressser's you are allowed to take your mask off to drink a cup of coffee! I will no doubt be shot down in flames for these views!

foxie48 Spot on!

This plumber reminds me very much of my daughter's boyfriend shock.

EVERYTHING that comes from a 'position of Authority' is a conspiracy dedicated to reducing our 'Civil Liberties' so that we can be controlled.

He's completely flattering himself to think that ANYBODY would be interested in controlling him and his group of moronic friends/associates who've been going around - even during the past year - in large groups, protesting about whatever is 'the latest conspiracy theory of the day'. They film themselves and put it all over Facebook. No masks and the majority of them smoking weed.

Long Live the University of Cheech and Chong!

JaneJudge Sun 25-Apr-21 08:59:38

I'd like to know how much time they think Bill Gates ACTUALLY has!

Loislovesstewie Sun 25-Apr-21 08:40:57

M0nica; stop talking sense! The whole point about these conspiracy theorist is that there is absolutely no common-sense in their arguments. there is no scientific basis for any of it, but they continue to believe. As for Bill Gates wanting us all to be microchipped for his own purposes!? He wouldn't find much of interest in me! And of course the other theory that we are all being made infertile by the vaccine; it's part of a plot to decrease world population. They don't get it that COVID-19 has done a good job on that by itself. But still they believe.

Shropshirelass Sun 25-Apr-21 08:36:27

He should meet my poor old Mother, at almost 100 she had Covid in January, she is still here but is a shadow of her former self. It is heartbreaking. So many families have suffered how on earth can he think it is a conspiracy?! I would divorce him too!

M0nica Sun 25-Apr-21 08:33:46

What I have always wanted to ask a COVID conspiracist, is about the practicalities of how their theories are implemented.

I mean where are all the chips or nano twiddly bits being made? How are they being distributed ? How they are keeping up with demand and getting to all the facilities an different companies now making millions of vaccines every day.

The plant(s) making what must now be making hundreds of millions of these chips/twiddly bits must be huge, they must employ hundreds of people, then there is the distribution system, that is going to involve more people. They must be exported to vaccine plants in many countries so that will involve customs and excise.

Then how do you you get all the different drug companies to co-operate in inserting them, and where in the process are they inserted and who inserts them and while these nano whats its are very small, surely they would be visible in the phials is tiny pieces of grit and wouldn't they block the needle when injected and given there are four or five doses of vaccines in each phial how do you ensure there is a nano whatsit in each needle full instead of one person getting three and two people getting none at all??

The number of people required to do what they claim requires thousands, if not tens of thousands of people to be in the conspiracy and not one of them to blab, not even when blind drunk or in pillow talk.

I have yet to meet an anti vaxxer face to face, but rather than contradict them I would like to ask them some of these practical questions?

KathrynP Sun 25-Apr-21 02:38:44

I know a man who has told me that he doesn’t intend to have the jab and no one living under his roof will have it. This includes a non British wife who will no doubt want to travel by plane to see her elderly relatives and his elderly mother. Met the mother the other day and cheerily asked her if she’d had her jab and she said “ Yes both of them, but don’t tell my son, I’ll never hear the end of it!” I expect that some of these anti-vaxxers will secretly sneak off and get the jab if they want to go abroad or do something that requires a COVID Passport but I doubt they will admit it to anyone.

Minerva Sat 24-Apr-21 22:07:55

There’s no talking to people like Daisy’s plumber. They go on and on, jumping from 5G to government plot to Bill Gates to nazi Germany and on and on.. My friend had to ask one of her sons to keep away after being ground down by the unrelenting doom laden nonsense.
My GD recently had to stay a weekend with an aunt while her mum was in hospital and had her hands smacked away when she went to use the sanitiser at the shopping mall. Her aunt told her that the government has put poison in the sanitiser. I couldn’t live with someone like that unless I was hopelessly in love.

As someone who specialised in infection control , I feel sorry for your lack of knowledge and supreme intelligence I beg to differ

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 24-Apr-21 20:59:47

‘He’s cheap and does a good job’ well that’s all right then!

All the people he can infect will have saved money.

Anitae Sat 24-Apr-21 20:26:04

My plumber never wore a mask either but hes cheap and does a good job. I don't believe it's a conspiracy but the government is not as worried about how many people have died as much as they claim. I agree probably lots more going on than he has said. My brother doesn't believe in covid and is not getting the jab and he runs a pub but I'm not about to disown him

Deedaa Sat 24-Apr-21 19:08:12

I would very much doubt that Covid is the only conspiracy he believes in. DD had a chap working for her who believed them all! He was a complete nightmare but fortunately moved on before Covid started. I think she would probably have killed him if he'd been there with anti Covid theories. (She has various means at her disposal. I think she would probably have locked hin in her -70 degree freezer wink )

Hithere Sat 24-Apr-21 18:44:21

Why they stay, not what

Hithere Sat 24-Apr-21 18:43:49

"22/04/2021 15:50EllanVannin

Doesn't take much these days, does it ? ( rolls eyes )"

Luckily now more women do not put up (and justify what they stay in such marriages) with the abuse/cheating/addictions/etc

Anyway, that is his version of events, if we talked to the wife, we would get a different reason

Caro57 Sat 24-Apr-21 18:36:51

No mask........
No come into my house
He’s an idiot - that may be the real reason and Covid is the get out clause

Galaxy Sat 24-Apr-21 17:39:58

I could and do live with/marry someone with all those differences. I couldnt stay married to a conspiracy theorist they are soooooo boring.
