The decision to end restrictions is dangerous and premature, unethical and illogical.

I am afraid you are right FarNorth and I fear for the state of the country when the Tories reign is over, and the remains of social and health care lies in ruins, along with many other things which we value, the Arts for one.

I’ve got a bad feeling that when the South African variant first appeared it seemed to affect young people quite badly. I could be wrong.

The British Heart Foundation site states that a study of the AstraZeneca vaccine in South Africa gives protection maybe only as low as 10% for the beta variant. This is the variant which is now active in France. No wonder the double jabbed have to quarantine after returning from France.

Hmm - I wonder growstuff - has he actually had it, or is it just another Government lie, to say that they're all with us, and no need to worry, because after a double vaccination, you would only get mild symptoms.

No reason not to cram onto the tube back to the office next week, and if it runs rampant through the rest of society, our plan is still on track - "release Roderick"! Sorry about the Monty Python reference, but this shower just remind me of a Monty Python collective.

Remember in the Grail film, they built a wooden rabbit and sent it up to the castle, but forgot to put troops inside - a bit like Johnson and Javid trying to convince us they're on our side!!

I think the worst Tories don't care about this because they plan to have the NHS privatised very soon.

I'm pretty sure I posted something similar a few days ago, but was jumped on.

Yes. I heard that, too. Long covid does not necessarily result from someone having covid badly. Mild symptoms can result in long covid. In fact, someone from the government got that wrong on tv the other day. I can’t remember who it was. It might have been the vaccines minister. Right from the start of the pandemic we’ve watched people from the government and health advisors say things that we knew were incorrect eg asymptomatic carriers that Johnson said he knew nothing about. And I’m not sure if the latest symptoms have been publicised yet? It is believed that the vaccine can reduce the chance of having long covid. That’s why I desperately want young people to be protected until they can be vaccinated.

The scientists who signed the letter disagreeing with the Johnson policy, said that the vaccine is not perfect. It is expected that new more effective vaccines will be coming online.

They are. Even the most conservative estimate is 4% of infected people under 19 reporting symptoms of long Covid after three months. The intention seems to be to let Covid infect all these young people (we all know they're not seriously ill - yeah yeah). There are over 8 million school children in England (sorry, I don't know how many in Wales, Scotland and NI), but that's 360,000 children who could end up with a debilitating long-term condition. I find that horrendous. If this were a measles or meningitis outbreak, the country would be up in arms if there were an outbreak of just a thousand cases.

This is what Jeremy Hunt said today (BBC). He is in the know.

‘The health secretary's positive test result comes hours after one of his predecessors warned the government may have to reimpose lockdown restrictions if Covid cases continue to rise over the summer and into the autumn.

Jeremy Hunt, who is now chairman of the Commons Health and Social Care Committee, told the Today programme earlier that the NHS was facing a "very serious" situation.

"The warning light on the NHS dashboard is not flashing amber, it is flashing red," he said.

He said hospital admissions were "doubling every two weeks" and that at the start of September "we are almost certainly" going to see daily infections surpass the previous daily record in January.

"If they are still going up as the schools are coming back I think we are going to have to reconsider some very difficult decisions," he added.’.

"How we behave over the next few weeks will have a material difference."

The vaccines do seem to be preventing hospitalisation and death. But it’s younger unvaccinated people that are at risk of developing long covid that worries me.

I think removal of masks and some other items on the lifting of restrictions is wrong. Equally wrong is any reliance on expectations of common sense or good judgement on the part of many of the public.
This morning, town was busy and almost all shoppers were masked inside shops. I’ll be in town on Monday on the way to work. I wonder how much will have changed.
