I have also read online about a further surge end of August to end of September ! Is it a surprise ? Not realty ! Pandemic has been managed the worst way ever bar USA !

My friend in the US says it's terrible over there and not been managed well at all.

How would any of us have managed a pandemic? It’s an interesting question because many people, both on Gransnet and in the general public think they know how to manage this Covid pandemic better than this government. I really wish we had a different government just to show that no government is able to manage a pandemic very well, whatever choices and decisions they make. Holland and Israel vaccination schemes are excellent but they’re both thinking of reintroducing further restrictions. France now has a spiralling number of the South African variant. New Zealand, Australia and Canada have chosen to close their countries, even not letting some of their citizens return. Sweden went for no lockdown but has still had many deaths. India and Brazil have had horrendous numbers of deaths.
To be honest I think we’re sort of doing okay. We need to get the rest of our young people vaccinated though and that should help us. We also need to take individual responsibility for our health and for me that means no big crowds and where necessary wear a mask, but I’m unsure whether they help to cut transmission or whether they just make us feel they help to cut transmission.
Very sadly I believe we’re going to have to get used to living with Covid. It doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon, whatever pandemic management strategies different countries have chosen, Covid is still there.

No country in the world has coped brilliantly with the pandemic. Apportioning blame is pretty useless against a natural disaster. The media has been responsible for much of the fear and panic engendered in the public. The number of people dying from Covid now is very small Compared to the 1000 a day dying from other causes - road accidents, heart attacks, stroke, cancer - info from a Yorkshire doctor.
I am 77 - am described as being clinically vulnerable - by my NBF Matt- now replaced by someone - hopefully less soppy- I had Covid in April 2020- Felt rough, coughed for 3 months etc etc - am now double jabbed - however, I am not afraid - we must get back to usual life - where nothing is ever certain- I have had countless operations and illnesses in the last 10 years - thanks to the NHS for keeping me here. So no way will I shut myself in these 4 walls - I may not have many more years left! Who knows?! ?

This government is a disgrace! God help us all!

I'd say almost all countries are diving in and out of restrictions like some kind of bizarre yoyo. I would not want to be amongst those having to make these decisions - what seemed like a good idea a few weeks ago (unlocking more) does not seem like such a good idea now. However we cannot live indefinitely in lockdown either - even when we fully vaccinate our remaining adults we will still have children to consider. Frankly its depressing, there still seems to be no end in sight.

I feel very anxious about Freedom day. In fact I think I feel worse about the situation than I did in March 2020.
I just can't do a seven hour train journey to see my 95 year old Mum. Thank goodness that I saw her in May when the numbers were low, but some people were not wearing masks on the train even then.
I am just going to restrict my activities out and about as from tomorrow.

Are you serious? Or is this a joke?

Look at many other countries…..they keep going in and out of lockdown…..numbers not dates! Would you rather we just carried on as normal……overwhelming the NHS…..when there are bodies outside hospitals like in India…we might be glad for lockdown! Easy to criticise…..it is a case of the blind leading the blind as nobody knows what going to happen next…..maybe we should sit down with covid and ask it??!

Perhaps you could tell us what you would do in this situation and how you would have managed it better.

When I was very ill with Covid last January, there were 500 plus cases of Covid in the hospital I was in. This week there have been 8 cases of Covid in the same hospital.

What Whitty said in the seminar: Hospitalisations are doubling quickly at the moment, about every 3 weeks, if that goes on we could get high numbers in a few weeks and we'll have to look at how we are handling it.

I don't think shutting down the media is quite the right answer but they really need to be considering how they are reporting this.

Where is your evidence that Chris Whitty does anything other than advise? The decisions are made by the government and ultimately Johnson.

Perhaps you would explain what makes you believe this and want to share it with us all.

The media do like to change things around.
I wouldn't worry too much. I suspect as usual the media make things a whole lot worse than they actually are.
Have faith and get through each day as it comes. Don't fret as the future isn't promised and the past has gone so today is a going to be a good day ?

It is a worry.I'm enjoying having more freedom,but would be happier if cases weren't rising.I can see there being ,maybe,a short lockdown at some point.We would all find this very hard .

Maddyone...I agree completely with your post about whatever government was in the same would be happening. Labour did not disagree with anything that the government decided to do. They did not put forward any alternative ideas. Even this morning when asked a shadow minister was pretty much agreeing that opening up is the right thing to do. The government are damned if they do damned if they don't

It seems to me that many people disagree with the government . If the government did everything differently a whole other group of people would disagree with them! There is no simple solution that works for everyone. What do the complainers want to happen? A general election maybe? Is there a party out there that would have all the answers and make everyone happy?

I’m not a politician or in Government and am just an ‘ordinary’ person with an opinion that’s all!!

Cases are up to a level they have not been since January. Deaths, however are thankfully far, far fewer due to the efficacy of the vaccination programme. Variants may indeed arise from this increase but the manufacturers of the various vaccines are vigilant re continuing effectiveness. We have to move forward otherwise our economy and our children’s/grandchildren’s future is at risk and the social divide will get wider and wider. I am quite confident that we are not being told the whole story here. Official and semi official figures are produced snd misrepresented so as to obscure the real facts. The public are bombarded with half truths from a self interested and uncritical media.
I only know that Boris Johnson, who in a previous incarnation, wrote and spoke many times about ‘freedom’ seems to have scant regard for those sentiments now, in thrall as he is to Sage and any other ‘scientist’ or politician who jumps on the current bandwagon. Lockdown, here we come!

That’s why we have the vaccine. We went into lockdown because we had to protect the nhs and the elderly and vulnerable. They’ve had their jabs, most have had the second jab. Now the government have scared people into not wanting to have a normal life again. COVID deaths are very very low yet suicide, cancer, dementia and other deaths are through the roof. There will never ever be a time where there isn’t a COVID case or death. Just like the flu sadly people will die. In the long run lockdowns and masks and minimising human interaction isn’t going to help. I’m the first lockdown a teenage girl committed suicide because she was not allowed to go to her grandmothers funeral. As I said the government has made a lot of people too scared to even leave their own homes. We only live once. People have been left to die alone with no family around them and people haven’t been able to say goodbye and for what? The rules we have been told we must follow have been broken by many politicians and celebrities and nothing happens, the double standards are awful. Time to get our lives back. Enough is enough now. We’ve done everything we can and have a very successful vaccine rollout for those who want to take it.
