News channels reporting with the increase of covid infections saying we should be all returning to face mask wearing...how do GNs feel if/when it becomes compulsory again?

MissAdventure Thu 21-Oct-21 20:35:39

I don't think it'll be too long before "the rules" change again.

I wear a mask if going indoors & am required to. These days that’s been the pharmacy, the GP surgery and for a hospital out patient appointment. If not mandatory, I don’t. But I don’t get up close to anyone when outside in the fresh air. I keep a good distance and I’m outside so I don’t see the need. Most people I see out and about aren’t wearing them.

Ps, have also started taking Vitamin D again.

Wear in shops and public buildings etc.

Also trying to keep up with hand sanitizing and washing.
In the hope that I can avoid not just covid, but also colds and
flu germs.

Although difficult with grandchildren at primary school.
Two of our grandsons just this last week have had horrible cough and colds,
Not sure how we have escaped.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 21-Oct-21 18:36:46

Yes. It's easier for us in Scotland as it is still a legal requirement to wear one in shops , public transport and other public indoor spaces.

hulahoop, if you were on Scotrail trains you were unfortunate, as the ones we have been on, although busy, had most passengers wearing masks. If you were on a cross-border service, I understand from a friend who has used them several times that there is a lot less mask-wearing among passengers and staff.

Hithere Thu 21-Oct-21 18:15:44

Still wearing them, more reason now that is flu season.

poshpaws my sincere condolences to you and your family no words can alleviate your loss and hurt?

Blondiescot Thu 21-Oct-21 18:10:26

I have always worn mine and will continue to do so for as long as I deem it appropriate. And I will also continue to give a wide berth to anyone who isn't wearing one.

Margiknot Thu 21-Oct-21 18:05:39

I’ve read many papers regarding mask wearing and infection control and as a result wear a mask indoors away from home. It would indeed be selfish and unwise ( knowing what I have read from reputable sources) not to! I agree with Lucca. Wearing a face covering ( unless exempt) is a condition of travel on the busy train I have to use for work- but only about 1/3 of people comply- which I find disappointing!

Daisymae Thu 21-Oct-21 17:39:09

I really can't believe that people are still staying that masks are not effective when trial after trial have proved then be effective in the reduction of transmission. Why do people choose to believe something they read on the net when this country's top medical experts including the CMO advise that they should be worn? That's a rhetorical question BTW.

What an irresponsible, poncy, nonsensical *

We wear masks in shops ,was surprised when away last week we travelled on train twice into Scotland and obviously back and there were lots of people in trains not wearing them .

I lost my husband to Covid in May 2020, and suffer from Long Covid myself. I've never stopped wearing a mask - not only for my own sake, since one can catch Covid more than once - but because I don't ever want to feel even part way responsible for someone else having to go through the horrendous heartbreak that I did as my husband succumbed to this vile disease.

Lexisgranny Thu 21-Oct-21 17:06:26

We use face masks in shops, surgery and hospital and use sanitiser before and after leaving a building. It just seems to be the sensible thing to do, though I must admit I do dislike wearing masks. Where possible we avoid being too close to fellow shoppers/patients. Frankly it has just become a way of life and we don’t really think about it any more,

Grammaretto Thu 21-Oct-21 17:01:53

The masks have protected me from colds as well. I am definitely wearing mine. Actually in Scotland we have been expected to wear facemasks on public transport and in shops since the start.
I heard that the sanitising of hands is less important as it's the breathing in your face which spreads the virus best.

Lucca Thu 21-Oct-21 16:56:35

I get furious with anti maskers, I really do.
So selfish and rather childish.
It’s all been said on here including useful information from Marydoll.

Eviebeanz Thu 21-Oct-21 16:52:03

We have continued to wear masks (me and DH). No exceptions.
We have both been unwell recently.
Double vaccinations for both of us.
Didn't think we could get covid. My son and DIL had been unwell-had to test for work and both tested positive along with 2 year old son. DH also tested positive.
If we had not worn masks when out we would have been spreading to others.
Something that has come as a shock to all of us is how unwell son and DIL have been with it and still are. They are mid thirties. They are not vaccinated and cannot be persuaded.
It will be a very long time before I feel like going out without a mask.

Husband popped into greengrocer for me today, said he was the only one in the small shop wearing a mask. Not even the assistants were.

MayBee70 Thu 21-Oct-21 16:30:59

I bet she is antibody tested in a regular basis, too. Something I’d love to have done.

MayBee70 Thu 21-Oct-21 16:30:02

And everyone in close contact with her is probably tested too.

growstuff Thu 21-Oct-21 16:25:40

Up to you TwoWolves, but if I see anybody without a mask in an enclosed space, I keep well clear. I couldn't really care less about your friends' opinion on climate change. I don't understand why anybody should be such a snowflake or so selfish about something so simple as wearing a mask. I wouldn't be surprised if the Queen is tested frequently.

muse Thu 21-Oct-21 16:25:33

Just back from the doctors and visit to two shops. Considering Cornwall has the highest cases in the south west and it’s rising, I saw about 1/3 not wearing masks in the shops. Cases here are higher than the figure for UK and the hospital is struggling.

I wish and hope it is made compulsory but doubt it will happen.

TwoWolves Thu 21-Oct-21 16:16:03

Evidence, hmm, well that's hard to come by - I can produce many scientific reports that say facemasks are useless, just as you can produce many scientific reports that say that aren't. But have any rigorous, controlled experiments been carried out by either side? No, of course they haven't - it would be unethical and dangerous to do so. You would have to have a person infected with covid placed in a room with non-facemask wearers; and another person infected with covid placed in a room with facemasks wearers to be able to come up with anything definitive.

So, my main, but not sole, reasons for not believing they work is that:
Newsreporters keep comparing us to other countries where facemasks are generally worn and with lowish covid rates, but omit to mention places like Norway - no masks, virtually no covid; Wales, always had masks, largest covid rates in the UK at the moment; Scotland, always had masks, previously known as the Covid capital of Europe. I could go on....

The MPs don't wear them in the HoC. And before you mention arrogant Tories, a news reporter reported that Labour MPs were just as bad at the recent conference - they only fished the facemasks out when they thought the cameras were near!

Our Queen - I haven't seen her wear one since they were made non-mandatory. Do you honestly think for one minute she'd have been let out of the palace without wearing a mask if she, a (probably) triple-vaccinated 95 year old women, if she was in any danger of catching covid? Honestly?

I remember being very dubious about facemasks when they were first made mandatory, and mentioned it on here, expecting others to agree with me. I was taken by surprise by the hatred expressed toward me and the expectation of my imminent death - yet I'm still here. Never had covid (had an antibody test, so I know for sure). I'm not saying I'll never get it, but if I do, it won't be because of a flippin' facemask.

Also, we spent a weekend recently with some friends and we ruined the whole time by arguing about facemasks. Then, right at the end of the weekend, after me rubbishing their arguments, and they rubbishing mine, they said 'Oh, we don't believe in climate change, though'!! FGS. The point I'm making is that you have your beliefs, I have mine and we're probably all too set in our ways to change our minds. So I'm not going to argue the toss about it any more.

I still wear one in shops and on public transport - it’s supposed to be compulsory on all London transport, but we used the tube the other day, and lots of people were wearing them below their mouths and noses, or not at all.

Even the wording of the announcements on TFL should be toughened up IMO - You must wear a face covering, unless….’ instead of the politely pussyfooting ‘Please wear a face covering…’

I dare say all the people who aren’t bothering will be among the first to be wailing and gnashing their teeth if we have another lockdown any time soon, esp. if it’s over Christmas.

PollyTickle Thu 21-Oct-21 16:08:09

Happily for us mask wearing in indoor public places is mandatory in Wales.
I’m afraid the great British public need to be told, freedom of choice doesn’t apply when it involves public safety.
We don’t say that driving at 30 mph in a built up area you’re less likely to kill a child if they should run out but it’s your choice.
I would like to see public safety films on television showing the ignorant how to wear a mask correctly.
Hands, face, space. Let’s just do it. No brainer.
