News channels reporting with the increase of covid infections saying we should be all returning to face mask wearing...how do GNs feel if/when it becomes compulsory again?

Nurses work in a clinical setting. With patients who are poorly, vulnerable or both. The general public don’t. Let’s keep a sense of perspective. I don’t get up close to anyone in the general public. Who would wear a mask in the fresh air? They don’t in Spain unless in a very bustling area. Only inside.

Who said anything about wearing them in the open air ? I’m talking about in shops etc

Well of course it does not make sense to wear a mask in fresh air unless in crowded places!

What many of us are saying, is that mask wearing should be compulsory in all enclosed public spaces- it is not difficult is it? It is compulsory in France, Italy, Switzerland and most EU countries - and it makes it so much simpler for staff and everyone. Wear a mask, or don't get in- no exception.

Lemongrove, so you take your mask off at the doctor's, once seated in the waiting area???

I see people around going for a walk in the fresh air and wearing masks! Pointless.
I put one on for entering a shop/ dentist/ doctor and cafe or pub until seated, and that’s it.I haven’t been on public transport for a while, but would wear a mask if I did.
I think more stringent mask wearing will be brought in by November if cases continue to go up.
Having said that....I’m more likely to catch Covid from one of my grandchildren.

Many years when I was a school girl / I worked in a the shop part of a bakery / we had to clean the glass ( spit guards ) at the end of the day. They were always grimy with spit ! So yes masks save other people from the germs that you inadvertently spit out / makes sense to me to protect others /yes ?

Or common sense. Different settings entirely.

How the heck is it common sense ???

I don't want to shop in a stuffy mask just because a nurse wears one

And there you have it. Selfishness, not science.

I have arrived and my first meeting of a close contact non masked person, a taxi driver. I asked him why he wasn’t wearing one . It isn’t the law, the government say we don’t have to.
I didn’t continue the conversation but felt sad, as he looked that he could be from, we have been told, a very vulnerable group in Manchester but I am not a doctor.
I am still wearing masks and have to go for that expensive PCR two day test tomorrow.

Sloegin they wear it because it's their job to do so. My husband is a welder he doesn't go out in overalls and helmet. I don't want to shop in a stuffy mask just because a nurse wears one

Kids all over the country are testing positive in the thousands who have nothing at all wrong with them and never get ill and who never - as far as can be determined - appear to infect anyone else in their families when kept at home. If this was just an isolated case here or there it could be dismissed but it isn't. I no longer believe the 'case' statistics are accurate or a sensible basis for policy.

Still compulsory indoors here ( N.ireland) although not everyone complying. I certainly am and particularly worried about non compliance as my husband is vulnerable. As a retired health care professional I have little patience with those who say they don't work or many who claim exemption. Most health care staff have to wear them for hours at a time so can't understand why people can't wear them when in shops. Think of the staff in ICUs or operating theatres who wear full PPE for a long time each day whilst performing complicated tasks.

Still wearing mine. People are dying in increasing numbers from Covid. Personal choice is one thing, but there's not much freedom in being dead due to stupidity.

The total numbers of people dying goes up in varying degrees all the time, sadly. However death rates are far far less now - due to immunisation - than the worst time which was February 2020. Let’s not scare ourselves silly.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Oct-21 07:47:56

It said on the news last night that one in ten secondary school pupils have Covid. So in an average class of 30 children, 3 will have it. I’m hoping this week’s half term here in Trafford will be something of a ‘circuit breaker’. A pause whilst immunisations play a bit more catch up perhaps.

Absolutely. And I will continue to do so.

Biscuitmuncher Sat 23-Oct-21 07:10:00

growstuff no I haven't

Txquiltz Sat 23-Oct-21 02:43:10

I wear mine and whether it benefits myself or you, it is no big deal for me to wear one. You only need to watch those caring for patients…they are not wearing their masks for no reason.

Have you been vaccinated yet Biscuitmuncher?

If masks worked covid would have been wiped out months ago

If people had worn them consistently, followed the rules on mixing in groups (no excuses) and there had been mitigations in schools ... Who knows?

Wearing a mask works!

My next door neighbour teaches in a secondary school. He says that in the last couple of weeks Covid cases have gone through the roof. Hardly the time to start relaxing.

Just a shame masks were ditched so quickly in England when they are still mandatory in Scotland and Wales. Seems such a small thing to do, abroad they are horrified!

its a small thing to do i really cannot understand why people just don't think for themselves and wear them we cannot rely on the government to give advice otherwise we wouldn't be in this mess still

Face masks DO WORK just keep wearing one that's what they were invented for, this is why cases are rising and not going down again, because we see lots of people not wearing them, use common sense it's not rocket science, people think it's over but i tell you it isn't, we are in for a rocky time use your brains, people and think of the vunerable, think of your loved ones the government needs to man up and get on top of this but i have no faith in them so it is up to us to be sensible we need to beat this
