Coronavirus

Very helpful interview discussing the role of zinc, vitamin D and K2 in viral infections. Certainly worth setting aside 40 mins to watch. Dr Cohen advised all his patients 2,000 of them, to take

Dr Cohen advises all of his 2,000 patients to take vitamin D, 4,000 iu daily, and none of them have been hospitalised since the start of the pandemic. He also claims zinc taken at the start of a viral infection (50mg twice a day) often knocks the virus on the head. He recommends a zinc maintenance dose at 30mg daily. Vitamin D needs to be taken long term, even in summer. It’s also interesting to read the readers’ comments, some claiming not to have had colds for many years since taking vitamin D and zinc.

I quite like it if a Gp admits to not knowing enough about something. So long as they listen to me and check out the subject later on.
It must be difficult to keep up with all the new info.

I worked for several doctors. Some were very clued up on vitamins etc but others had no interest in learning about them.

I only take things prescribed for me by my own doctors. If you read the video description you will see that Dr. Cohen, or is it Dr. Campbell, also recommends speaking to your own doctors first.

The trouble is, doctors are not guaranteed to know everything! A couple of years ago I asked a GP aged around 40 about the possibility of being prescribed Vitamin K2 as I’m on long term AdCal calcium and vitamin D. He had never heard of the existence of Vitamin K, or its crucial role in preventing calcification of the arteries by directing the calcium to the bones. Alarmingly, he seemed to be perfectly comfortable in his ignorance.

Thank you juicyflowers. I've just nipped to buy some and am taking them as I writesmile

Vitamin C is also recommended to boost the immune system. I have been taking that, as advised by a pharmacist as well as Vitamin D since the start of the pandemic.

I’m sorry you’ve been suffering Nannee. I hope you feel better soon ?

Nannee49 Tue 14-Dec-21 11:05:12

Thank you for this juicywords I will definitely give the vitamins a go having suffered long covid, horrible shingles and finally, another dose of covid in October despite being double vaccinated.
I can feel the onset of something viral again at the minute so will try anything it's sooo miserable.
On a lighter note, I think it was Virol our mothers dosed us up with in those long ago days of the 50's calistemon

Oh, thanks.
DH might like those too.

I'll have to plough my way through these enormous capsules first, they weren't cheap.

Callistemon sorry to repeat myself, (there are so many Vitamin D threads!)
The AdCal tablets are really nice, like big Refreshers

Yes that's what I meant.
I'm very sceptical of people feeding into the idea that the general public should be taking extra this or that.
It smacks of conspiracy theory type beliefs, to me.

You're not old enough to remember the free cod liver oil, orange juice forced on us post-war children!
Not to mention the jars of malt extract our mothers gave us.

How we suffered ?

When my husband was in Critical Care with Covid pneumonia, all of the patients were given AdCal (vitamin D and Calcium) twice a day.
He was sent home with boxes of them too.

Interesting, FannyCornforth

Not long ago, GP s were advised to prescribe Vitamin D for all the children in their practice- I think it was a NICE recommendation.
We never heard any more about it here.

I bought calcium and magnesium with Vit D tablets after I broke a bone, then bought what I thought were more but they're huge things with cod liver oil and lots of minerals. Not tried one yet.

And you have to be in the sun for quite a longtime. In some countries they tell you how much sun exposure you need to have to get an adequate amount. It also takes a while to build up your Vitamin D levels.

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 09:44:28

Yes, very true.
It just seems that people are very invested in the idea that it will somehow protect against covid, when there is no evidence of that.

Approximately only 10% of our vitamin D can be obtained from diet. It’s just information. No coercion

Shinamae the AdCal tablets are huge, but you eat them, they are absolutely delicious, like Refreshers

Shinamae are the tablets in your photo huge? Can they be broken in half or are they large capsules?
I have a problem swallowing large pills, so before I buy any I like to have a look at the size first.

Small capsules, no problem to swallow at all, well not for me…. I always find the multivitamin ones are the largest and a bit harder to swallow so those I do break in half..

I take a low dose Vitamin D, I think it’s the dose recommended by government health advisors. It’s only 400 iu per day, but I’ve seen a great improvement in my nails since I started taking it. I don’t want to take a high dose because it can apparently calcify in the arteries if the dose is too high. Maybe a high dose is needed to protect against Covid.

That's what the NCBI research seems to show maddyone Higher doses I mean.

Who is Dr Cohen?

There are several Dr Cohens who appear if I Google.

Calistemon Mon 13-Dec-21 23:20:27

Dinahmo

I've suffered from bronchitis for many years. 4 years ago I was recommended to take Vitamin D3 and have done so ever since. No bronchitis since then and very rarely catch a cold. If I feel one coming on it's gone the next day. I'm 74 and writing as someone who has had severe bronchitis, at least twice a year in the past. My illness meant that I was bedridden for at least week and then off work for more than one week plus 2 courses of antibiotics each time with prednisolone thrown in.

So, for me vitamin D is a wonder supplement.

How much do you take, Dinahmo?

I was told I didn't need to take a supplement by the GP although my levels were 'only just ok'. I do take it but not every day.

MayBee70 Mon 13-Dec-21 23:12:10

If you take K2 it prevents the calcification. The problem is, because of the way it’s described, 5,000 it sounds like a massive amount but, as the doctor in the blog said, it really is a tiny amount. I don’t think Tim Spector rates VitD judging by what he’s said in blogs. David Davis does and he’s got a scientific background.

Yes. I watched that blog yesterday. I’ve never been sure about K2 . I started taking it last year but when I read that it affected the blood I stopped, but have started taking it again recently because I believe there is a difference between K2 and K1. I’ve also taken zinc for the past 20 months because I remember Strepsils having zinc in them to help with throat infections. DD has taken 4,000iu of D3 for a long time and when I said I thought it was a bit high she said she’d discussed it with various friends who were doctors and nurses. They’d also been taking it themselves. The amount of D3 recommended has just been to prevent rickets. I guess we’ll just have to see how those of us on D3 get on compared to those that don’t. I’d like to have a blood test to see what my D3 level us but, as was mentioned in the blog, the test is expensive and not widely done. To be honest, I don’t care if someone has a Dr in front of their name or not it all depends on if what they say makes sense. If I remember right, DrFauci said last year that he was taking a very high dose of VitD, an amount that surprised even DrCampbell. I also remember seeing a report that hydroxychloroquine had to be taken with zinc to be effective, but can’t remember who mentioned it. I’m certainly not going to stop taking D3. I think there’s a difference between blood thinners and anti coagulants? I bought some K2 for DH but he hasn’t taken it because he’s on medication for an infected vein. My SIL is currently recovering from covid as has my grandson and, although the former didn’t feel great he is, thankfully on the mend. They have both been taking D3 for a long time.
