News Just announced that we are the first in the whole of Europe and the 5 th highest country in the world to reach 150,000 deaths. It’s not a win anyone would want and I am tired of self satisfied politicians constantly blowing the trumpet of look at how well we have done.
Feeling very sad. sad

France, last year PCR tests were free until October, since then we pay the chemist for a home test packet with only 1, yes one test costing 5 euros without a prescription.

And at the same time, there is a thread on here of people saying 'We've got to get back to normal sometime.'

If covid is to be accepted as being endemic than we won't ever 'get back to normal'.

I hesitate to quote from twitter, but

You might have noticed something important here, and it’s something I think MANY of the people shrugging off covid becoming endemic get wrong:

“Endemic” does NOT mean “harmless”.

Oops sorry. Out of interest, did you think there was a big difference between the two countries regarding mask wearing and distances kept between people?

Only just saw this, sorry.

hmm I only nipped into two large shops in England the other day (one was B&Q so a lot of space anyway) and most people were wearing masks and keeping their distance, much the same as here.

'muted' or 'mooted', GG13?

Either could apply but would significantly change the meaning of what you said.

Indeed, thanks

The second line has the words could be , the piece also states that vulnerable settings/people will continue to get LFT kits, NHS, Schools, Care Homes etc.

Even the Daily Mail online was saying the same last night, that’s where I read it.

MaizieD Sun 09-Jan-22 11:58:06

Please stop exaggerating what it being reported and read the articles carefully.

Not everyone has access to the Sunday Times, Teacheranne. It's behind a paywall.

MaizieD Sun 09-Jan-22 11:56:32

Thank you Maizie. Of course some will say this report can't be trusted as it comes from a paper that represents the hysterical left, The Times.

Love your sense of Humour, Kali2 grin

'the paper that represents the hysterical left' ???

Having read the article there are lots of could/might I have taken this screenshot where it states that Schools, Care Homes and vulnerable settings will continue to be provided with free LFT’s if and when the a government scale back testing.

There were news articles way back last summer claiming that free LFT tests would not longer be available but it never happened.

I also interpreted the article as GrannyGravy13 did, as a possibility in the future but with the tests still available for certain categories, including care homes, NHS workers, education, certain key workers and vulnerable people.

Please stop exaggerating what it being reported and read the articles carefully.

Daisymae, yes it is the case in many countries. But this means that some will not be able to afford to test, and therefore will not- which is dangerous in the middle of rising numbers, in the middle of winter. Hope that at least, if this comes to be true, schools, NHS, Care homes, etc- will be provided with free tests.

MaizieD Sun 09-Jan-22 11:39:42

Oh, and BTW, the UK has actually reported 173,248 deaths with covid mentioned as a cause on the death certificate. Figures to 24th December. A good couple of thousand to add since then.

Just as we reach this terrible figure- news are that Lateral Flow tests will no longer be available for free- and possibly not at all.

So no more testing for work and school, etc. But no testing before visiting vulnerable mother, GC or friend, either. Will they still be available to vist loved ones in hospital or care homes? Not the right time for this, for sure.

Kali2 I did think of reporting your post as it is fake information, instead I think it’s best to leave it up and let posters make up their own minds…

GN is awash with hive hysteria this morning.

If it's fake information then it is the Sunday Times you should be reporting, not Kali2.

But there appears to be some confusion in the government about this:

Education Secretary went on TV this morning to say that the story wasn't true, but then actually retweeted a link to the Sunday Times story hmm

(sorry, I can't do screenshots)

Daisymae Sun 09-Jan-22 11:33:17

I have a relative who lives abroad and they have always paid a nominal fee for a LFT. Guess that we will have to as well.

Thanks A1, that's exactly the sort of stats record I was wondering about. I'll now take time to study it in depth and with interest. Not that these awful figures make any one death from Covid any less sad or tragic. Thanks again for responding positively to my ignorance.

Alegrias1 Sun 09-Jan-22 10:58:16

That's not true, is it Kali2? You've taken one news report and added your own bells and whistles.

And Bonnie’s in Swansea, still holding out for a hero..although as a PCR test is £68 (not £130) she could probably afford to nip over to France now and then.

Depends where- Where we had ours done on arrival to UK, it was 70 for antigen, 130 for PCR if same day results. To return this week, antigen was 70. Prices vary hugely, depending on by post, same day, next day, or ...

Sad and horrendous statistic. Can anyone tell me are we doing any sort of pro rata of population when we get our awful position 'league' tables?

Is this what you're looking for Kim19? Sort by deaths per million population.
