No Vax and no Covid?

My vaccinated DS and teen GC have all tested positive this weekend. My DiL who is a staunch anti vaxer remains negative. She takes vitamins and other herbal antivirals eg garlic and ginger. Vaguely wondering if she has a point?

Nope, not lucky actually tested positive earlier this week. Has cold like symptoms. My Son in Law, who lives in a different county also has it. No escape methinks.....

Farmor15, thank you for this. It's all much more complex than I thought. Hence I'm not a scientist. I will remain cautious, no matter what any government says.

Hong Kong has high numbers Maddyone but it might be explained by their vacination figures they are not good

Pepper59 - there are lots of different viruses that cause respiratory infections. Coronaviruses (including Covid 19) and Influenza virus are 2 of them, but are quite different viruses, even if symptoms are sometimes similar. www.cdc.gov/flu/symptoms/flu-vs-covid19.htm

Common colds are caused by a number of different viruses, including Coronavirus (different types to Covid!), Adenovirus and Rhinovirus (rhino relates to nose!).

Viruses are given names based on what they look like or what they do. Coronavirus was given its name from it's appearance under electron microscope - thought to look like a crown (corona=crown in Latin)

Your DiL is quite right. The vax will not do anyone any good and this will become more and more apparent as time goes on.

I had Covid before I was able to be vaccinated and I can assure anyone that it was not just a cold. I was in hospital for twelve days, and the pneumonia I developed has left scars on my lungs which have not healed. Next X-ray is in June. This is not a great situation for an asthma sufferer to be in.
Since then I’ve had all my vaccinations and I’ve been Covid free. I hope it lasts. As I understand it, the evidence is clear, the vaccines work and at the very least lesson the effects of Covid.
Have you seen what’s going on in Hong Kong? Take a look, you’ll see that Covid hasn’t finished with us yet.

She has just been lucky, I think.

It's very confusing, my understanding was flu is a type of Coronavirus, someone who knows about these things can perhaps inform us all. As for depending on Garlic Oil to fight Covid-19, good luck with that. The difficulty with Covid-19 is nobody knows how ill they are going to be until they get it. Though now we get the ' oh, it's just a cold brigade'. I can assure people it's far from a cold.

CoolGran55 Catching coronavirus naturally is not guaranteed to do anybody any good.
Have you heard of long covid, and there is research on brain changes after covid?

DiL is still covid free.

I've been sprinkling anti-tiger powder all around my front garden and, what do you know, it has worked!

???

Well it certainly isn't apparent at the moment vacination has saved countless lives
All I can say to the unvaccinated is good luck especially if you are on the more mature side

What evidence do you have for that?

Thank you x

Flu is caused by the influenza virus A and B with different variations appearing each year.
Covid is caused by the the coronavirus and it’s different mutations.
They share some similarities in spread and symptoms, but are definitely different.

VioletSky Tue 15-Mar-22 09:48:08

Well I jinxed myself because I am now positive!

MawtheMerrier Tue 15-Mar-22 09:39:04

volver

Flu's not a coronavirus.

Kinda blows the theory out of the water.

Absolutely
I believe I am right however in thinking the coronavirus virus along with the rhinovirus is at the root of a considerable proportion of common colds

Witzend Tue 15-Mar-22 08:27:37

I’m sure a lot of it is down to genes aka luck of the draw.

Though having said that, the only people I know who’ve had it badly enough to need hospital, either had it before vaccines were available (a super fit 50+ who was in for a few days)
and 3 local brothers of 60-70 (2-3 weeks each in hospital) who had chosen not to have the vaccine because they ‘weren’t sure’. All very weak long after they were finally home again.
(And needless to say, no longer ‘not sure’!)

volver Tue 15-Mar-22 08:18:19

wink

argymargy Tue 15-Mar-22 08:14:40

Yes @volver I’m not sure why I @‘d you there ?

volver Tue 15-Mar-22 08:10:59

I'm not commenting on natural immunity to anything.

I'm just saying the flu virus is not a coronavirus.

argymargy Tue 15-Mar-22 08:07:59

@volver there are people who appear to have natural immunity to various things eg one of my siblings has never had chicken pox, in spite of the rest of us having it as children and their own children having had it when young. I have also never had flu (and never had flu vaccine) but as you say that doesn’t mean I won’t catch covid one day (in spite of having had covid vaccs).

volver Tue 15-Mar-22 08:04:14

Personally, I don't think I've ever heard a serious scientist/medic say that the flu virus is a coronavirus?
