Well , here I am about to do a COVID test 🥲
After attending not one but two outside Music Concert events in the same week 4/07 & 7/07 , I started feeling unwell on the way home on the night of the 7th .
Really dry throat .
By Monday morning I felt really poorly my throat was on fire , coughing & slept for two days . No headache or joint pains .
I stayed home & by Thursday 11/07 I was feeling 90%better which for me was a good thing as we were travelling to London by train ( tickets pre purchased) to another event .
All was good , spent the afternoon watching the Woman’s Doubles at the Everyman Theatre at Kings Cross so lots of fresh air .
Fast forward to yesterday & after being away at the coast with my family & friends hiring a beach hut & being at the beach everyday from Saturday 13th until yesterday , here we go again ! , I am feeling much the same as I did on 7/07 !!
Yet again , I have had to cancel meeting friends etc . This is the self same thing as I had last year around November not once but twice within a short period of time , then it was a viral infection. I seem to of become prone to them of late or is it since I’ve reached 70 ?
I despair 😩

I felt ill 3 weeks ago , tested positive for Covid,- first time ever !!
Two days in bed , absolutely exhausted, sore throat and felt sick.
Goodness knows how much worse it might have been had I not been vaccinated. So yes I think it is on the rise. DH tested negative !? and had one day feeling under the weather but not as ill as me
We kept very low profile, all ok now thank goodness.

Last time I had it I was given anti virals and it disappeared within 48 hours. They do have side effects, though - nasty stomach ache being the worst for me.

The real question is why is there no cure for covid-19? because the vaccine can only do 50% of the job.As far as I know I am the only person to ask this question and if I am not then that is a small relief but only small!!!The other question is why do people think the a mask can filter out a virus that is exactly 1.2 microns in size i looked at the box for the advanced mask for doctors and nurses and it said it can only filter out 3.0 microns and no smaller!!!I am not trying to scare any one jest to point out what has been missed Christian set as far as I can tell no one has asked

There are many things that there isn't a cure for. The common cold is one of them. The main problem is the number of different strains of the cold that are circulating - at least 150 varieties. www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-havent-we-cured-the-common-cold-yet/

Covid is similarly varied. New strains appear frequently. It is not just finding a cure for one disease - it is trying to design a master key to open hundreds of different locks at once.

The link above describes the search for a cure for the common cold. The search for a Covid cure is similar, plus it has only been around for about 4 years. The researchers don't have a magic wand that will produce an instant answer.

My younger son and his partner have had it since Thursday, and I visited them on Wednesday so am waiting to see if I have caught it....no symptoms so far.
I had a booster jab in April and will accept all further jabs offered.
Son and partner both feel terrible. It's still a nasty illness.

Greyduster Sat 10-Aug-24 07:23:56

I got it at the back end of last month and have no real idea of where it came from except that I was at a small drinks party with my neighbours and one of them came down with it at the same time as I did. The jury’s out on who infected whom, but we both agreed we were glad we’d had the jabs because it could have been so much more debilitating without them. As it was I have never felt so unwell and three weeks down the line, I am still struggling with the fatigue and suspect I will be for some time. I have heard numerous incidences of people coming down with it, so it seems to be very prevalent at the moment.

I think I caught something at my Grandson's graduation nearly 2 weeks ago. I was quite ill but had no tests. I have lost my sense of taste and smell and still feel under the weather.
I stayed at home for a week so I wouldn't pass it on.
Not sure if it was covid or a cold but it was nasty whatever it was.

Witzend that is interesting about your DD’s partner not catching colds.
I very, very rarely catch a cold even when surrounded by sneezers.

When I was 18 I went to the Common Cold Research unit on Salisbury plain when they were trialing Interferon as a common cold cure. I was successfully given a cold there, followed by Interferon. I often wonder if this had anything to do with my healthy immune system. I looked into the unit recently and thought of contacting them, but it no longer exists unfortunately.

I never had any of the childhood illnesses, or the flu. The only infection I have had was glandular fever as a teenager.

I would be interested to know a bit more about your DDs partner’s health history.

Vaccination will help us live with COVID just like flu.

Witzend Sun 21-Jul-24 10:05:00

Notagran55, you sound like my dd2’s partner. Not only has he never had it, he never even gets colds, either. They’re the same type of virus, so I dare say he has natural immunity, the lucky bugger!

Ziplok Sun 21-Jul-24 10:01:26

It will never go away completely - there will always be new variants as it adapts, rather like ‘flu. It’s something we have to live with, unfortunately.

Yes, a neighbour of ours has it quite badly - but not enough to keep her in bed, since she told dh on meeting him outside! I said I hoped he kept his distance!!

But it sounds like what used to be called ‘summer flu’. I’m not sure how that differs from winter flu, except for the seasonal name. I suspect not at all.

More recent figures -

Those are the figures for recent deaths from all causes, nothing to do with how prevalent Covid is.

We had it a couple of weeks ago.
Our son who lives in Asia now, "popped in" on his way elsewhere for 5 days - and had to stay in a hotel.
😟

luluaugust Sun 21-Jul-24 07:19:05

DH and I had it about 5 weeks ago, terrible cough and I lost my sense of smell and taste. We had just had our jabs which made me feel ill so not a good Summet. Separately my DB now has it which means he has missed family events, very fed up.

NotAGran55 Sun 21-Jul-24 06:44:42

I currently know 4 people who have it, I was in contact with 3 of them for 2 days last week but haven’t caught it.

I’ve never had it and wonder if I’m immune. My entire extended family have all had it at least once and I’ve escaped each time.

I haven’t personally known anyone for a long time who has had it recently, so think it must be on the increase here again.

Starof1972 Sun 21-Jul-24 00:19:28

I test mainly to protect my daughter - she works with severely immuno-compromised children and its at high risk with her own health problems. I have been ill for over a week but still testing negative so I'm thinking it must be something other than covid confused

nanna8 Sat 20-Jul-24 23:53:09

It never went away here but seems to be a slightly less severe strain now. People still die but not in such great numbers, thank goodness.

LadyGracie Sat 20-Jul-24 22:41:35

I've had it for 15 days now, I felt dreadful for the first 8 days before it started to ease. I still tested positive yesterday. I feel worn out and still cannot taste or smell anything.

cornergran Sat 20-Jul-24 22:29:54

Definitely not gone away, it’s unlikely to simply disappear especially now with summer travel.

Friends in Norfolk have had it after attending concerts. Both have had severe digestive issues along with a fever and general exhaustion. One clear after a week, the other still positive after three weeks. Attending for a blood test last week I was told hospital admissions in our small coastal town (South West) are increasing. Surely will to increase further with the summer influx. I noticed several surgery staff are wearing masks again. 🤞 we stay clear.

Cabbie21 Sat 20-Jul-24 22:10:44

I am just hoping I don’t get it, as I am going on a coach holiday on Monday. I’m not sure what I can do if I feel unwell when away, and if I were to feel unwell tomorrow it might be too soon to show a positive test. I have had all my jabs.

BlueBelle Sat 20-Jul-24 22:03:19

I did have my spring booster
I ve had Covid twice that I know of but wasn’t ill just a bit under the weather

dotpocka Sat 20-Jul-24 16:01:31

did not go away

dalrymple23 Sat 20-Jul-24 15:18:49

Urms: I cannot decide either. Had my booster in October and when offered in April, it did seem a bit soon. I do have a compromised immune system but the significant other is not allowed to have one - considered too young!! So it would be a bit pointless.
