It began as group support during difficult times and although Covid has faded a little, the friendship has endured and become stronger.

Still here for anyone to join a non-judgemental, caring thread during the often challenging time in life.

I'm a newbie - found friends after lockdown. Grateful to them for being so warm.

Evening good people. Had lots of problems with the internet last evening then my post got stuck forever on Preview. Got cross and went to bed......

Start again, a beautiful day today - almost like the Med' πŸ˜‰ - since the sun has finally turned around and come back to us. Hopefully all of you will have been benefitting lately? Horrible when we completely forget a family birthday, Grammaretto, but it happens (as your DS reported). She's bound to understand (if she's nice!)

Thanks to everyone for their wishes for our Ludo πŸ•, or The Dog as he is often known, since we have never owned just the one dog until recently but he's all we have now and much loved. He seems to have recovered from his shocking outing and being set upon by OOCC's. I am quoting you here, Neine - Out Of Control Chiens. Having now learned the difference between Acronyms and Initialisations courtesy of dear Kaimoana, I hope we can agree that this falls into the Initialisations category. Amazing! Every day a school day on GN.

I am keeping all fingers and toes crossed for your MiL, NotSpag and hope that she will be well enough to be released to a much nicer place in a couple of weeks. We're glad that hospitals exist, of course, but there's nothing like home care, our own bed, tempting food, concerned and caring folk to lift our spirits, and, if she's managing little jokes let's hope that she'll weather the storm and be home soon, poor love. How did the wedding and your Son's visit go? Hope you managed to spend some quality time with him.

Meant to say that whilst driving home from the Scanner Clinic a few days ago, we came across quite a lot of pre-lunch traffic. Lunchtime being sacred in France, lots of locals as well as hungry tourists made the area quite busy. But the traffic in both directions was at a stop once we came to a bridge. Engines were switched off and we prepared for a delay.

As I could just see ahead and to the side, I suddenly spotted a couple of bare legs (in shorts) and one foot sticking out from underneath the front of a car. There was a cycle on the pavement which was behind a raised kerb.

Panic mode and I feared the worst. I get very emotional if I think someone is hurt and I decided that a cyclist had possibly flown off his bike and into the road and been struck by a car!!!!

We were too far back to be needed - although in France it pays to think about that because if you are a lone vehicle and see someone in trouble, it's an offence not to stop and offer help.

Then to my great relief, 'the legs' got up and crossed the road. The lady driver whose car he was under also crossed the road with a smiling face! They both lowered a number of baby ducklings onto the grass behind the hedge. The cyclist had been searching for a duckling under the car, but she had obviously managed to stop in time. Other motorists managed to catch various brothers and sisters and order was restored.

Never a dull moment here. The Swallows, like me, have been very busy doing 'housework' and I have helped sweep up behind the one still doing design and renovation.

Don't go far, Ixion, we need the laughter and input.

Hope you are taking special care of yourself, Doodle and you're not too uncomfortable.

grandmafrench your story brought back to me timeDhand I rescued a number of ducklings who’d waddled into a sunken garden only to discover they couldn’t get out again.. Withthe help of another couple and some Sainsbugs shopping bags all were returned safely to mum and river.
Sorry all writing left handed is having a big impact in my left shoulder so I a struggling . I am reading and thinking of you all

The mention of makeup (somewhere) reminded me how hard I tried to use it in my youth.
Lipstick was swiftly 'eaten' off; my eyes, always sensitive to light, were automatically rubbed when itchy, so it was hardly worth pursuing !! grin

Not that it would have made any difference; you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. smile

Kaimoana2 Mon 12-May-25 20:53:09

GrandmaFrench We used to get Australian Swifts here in Springtime, living up to their name, diving and whistling as they caught airborne insects.

But then, as usual, money spoiled everything and the available land was snatched by developers for building and the birds and insects disappeared.

I still hear a thrush singing occasionally but the blackbird who lived next to my house for so long has gone too.

Probably because we have an abundance of roaming cats and water rats here but they don't sing or fly or indeed have any useful purpose.

Why is ixion missing? Not illness I hope.

This forum isn't, couldn't be, won't be the same without wise ixion

Lots of jobs over the last few days here - mostly around cleaning unfortunately... and yesterday too long in the car going to and fro to my mother-in-law's house.

Having gone to meet her cleaner there in the morning I had to come home again at lunch time to take my antibiotics which I'd left in the kitchen... and then in the evening her two very kind nieces arrived in her little town for two days so i went back home again to collect my husband to meet them there for dinner.

...just lost a long post so this may come in installments now as need to get sorted for a trip back to the dentist. Sorry.
Have a lovely day.

Naughtyneine Wed 14-May-25 08:00:57

Ixion is ok, she is just taking a little break because she's finding some posts on GN very 'snippy'....not our lovely group...but lurkers who suddenly appear and seem hell bent on being unpleasant. I've noticed that too hence I stick to the nice kind supportive posts. She has promised to be back in time for bridesmaid fittings

Talking of weddings...some of you may have read about Monday's horror story. I got a call from the venue where the wedding reception was due to be held to tell me that they were leaving and didn't know when so couldn't say if they would still be there for our wedding...also they didn't know if new people would be in by then either or whether they would honour our booking if they were in place.

It was such a shock ( driving on the motorway too) that something that hasn't happened for years reoccurred and I started to stammer. I feel so sorry for people who have stammer all the time...it is so exhausting trying to get words out. DH thought I'd had a car crash as he couldn't understand what I was saying.

The afternoon passed in a whirl of googling possible new venues and by a miracle both DH and I both independently emailed the same one and they had just had a cancellation. We popped down on Monday evening and it's set on the heart of the countryside with gorgeous views and despite being closed on Mondays the owner came out and took us on a tour and by last night all had been agreed. A blessing in disguise it seems. It didn't feel like that at the time!!!

Tomorrow I have succumbed to the demands of my DF ( the oracle on proper bras) and am going for a fitting at Bravissimo. Apparently they don't use measure tapes but do it by eye. If any letter over F or maybe G is mentioned she won't have an 'eye' to do it by as I'll have poked it out.

Hello brave Doodle - I hope you were able to read Naughtys post, it is both hilarious and gratifying. A Good Read.

Grammaretto Wed 14-May-25 21:35:26

Naughtyneine what a nightmare! Weddings are so stressful at the best of times but you could do without that.
Well done finding a great new venue.

Sorry ixion isn't posting. Come back soon, at least to us!

It was Chinese helpers last day so we went on a river trip. It made for a super day. She's great company -. very appreciative of everything and easily amused.
I became conscious that souvenirs are all made in China, I was determined to find her something genuinely Scottish. We found a charity shop and a scarf handwoven on Islay for which she paid Β£8 and a blouse, not Scottish but not Chinese either.
I shall miss her.
A couple of photos of puffins and bridges.

ixion Ne te deterreat malum. Fight back by ignoring the morons, we don't need to give them mind-room nor let them win with their puerile, invidious machinations.

This applies to us all - our lives are richer and more fulfilling than those for whom we can only feel pity.

Latest News: don't get too excited, I haven't won a fortune.

For close on 16 year I've been entitled to free diabetic foot care and in all that time the foot person, though very friendly, has cut my nails and little else - and indeed I;ve been very grateful.

Since I changed my doctor I have also been referred to a new podiatrist and today was my first appointment.

Complete examination of my feet and many questions to get an accurate idea.
Pulses checked with a Doppler device which made me laugh because my parents used to say, when their feet were sore 'My dogs are barking' and the Doppler sounded exactly like dogs.

Nails examined thoroughly; big toe nail wrenched from the nalbed due to an accident over a year ago, not detected previosly and still hasn't healed.
So that was treated.

Soothing massage of foot and calf and finally nails clipped and iodine applied to damaged big toe.

Previous podiatry allowed me 3 free sessions a year but typically I needed 4 which I had to pay for.

With these lovely people I have 6 free appointments and 1st class care. They want to see me in 2 months to check all is well.

All this may sound very mundane but I have arthritis in my feet and they are always painful, especially as most of the padding underneath has gone and some of the toes are deformed, so to have such luxury care is a real blessing.

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 08:52:44

Kaimoana what a delight. My feet are arthritic and with my wonky hip and being on the "round" side, I struggle with them.

Until about a year ago I could at least get to them!

My mother-in-law had a change of surgery and her podiatrist/foot care person also does little more than cut her toenails.
How she would love your great new service!

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 10:06:14

Like you Ixion I was commenting on a different thread but it has become very unpleasant.
I'm also walking away.

There seems to be such a lot of it now!

Re my hip.
I missed a phone call from my consultant's secretary a whole week ago today... at first i was horrified but now, in a way, I'm relieved. So I'm not having the operation this week or next!
She is SO lovely, thoughtful and considerate and has booked me in later in the summer. I really didn't want my husband rushing between hospitals in two different cities - between me and his mother.
He had ME quite badly years ago and it all flares up again under too much stress. I love him and can't knowingly do this to him.
I am delighted to accept another couple of months of pain and paracetamol to be able to do this.
By then we may have a better steer regarding his mum.

Doodle

Evening all. Thinking of you. Love and hugs xx

Thinking of you too, Doodle and hope you heal soon.So many people on here seem to have had unpleasant things going on. I hope it will soon calm down and we can be back to chatting about happy things again.
I had a call this morning from my son-in-law’s Mum. She has had a rather troubled life overall, but never moans. She wanted to tell me that her granddaughter, aged 2, who has been seriously ill, is now starting to learn to walk again. Brilliant news, but sad that the poor little girl, who has already learnt to walk once, now has to learn all over again!
Not brilliant weather wise here today, cloudy and cool. There is a Cruise ship moored here at the moment, waiting for all those lucky people who can get away from it all. I am quite envious, even though I don’t travel well.
I hope all Gransnetters and their families have a good day. I see some of you have sunshine. Could you send some down to Kent please?? 🌞

Crossstitchfan Thu 15-May-25 11:20:05

NotSpaghetti, sorry I missed you off my last post. Signed off before I realised.
Just wanted to say that I hope it all goes well with your hip, and also with your MiL. Old age never comes alone, as they say. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get through our days without pain, hassle and worries about the World? Oh well, best foot forward and all that. (Sorry Doodle!)

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 11:25:40

Naughtyneine I'm genuinely very excited for you about your forthcoming nuptials.
πŸ’‘πŸ€΅β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘°β€β™€πŸ’πŸ””πŸ’’

I hope the bra shopping was straightforward and has created a lovely silhouette!
My family were all involved in tailoring/fashion and always said you can wear a bin bag will if your "foundation garments" are right!
πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
It always made me laugh as no matter what I wore "underneath" I'd never look good in a bin bag!

Doodle Thu 15-May-25 19:54:36

Evening all. A year ago today Dh went into the hospice. I’ve been feeling very emotional all day. He held my hand in the ambulance and was pleased to get there. Such a short time but it made a difference to us both.
Kaimoan your pamper session sounds lovely.
Love to all x

Grammaretto Thu 15-May-25 20:15:29

Ah yes . A whole year ago.
I'm glad he had that special time because the hospital wasn't nice.
Dear Doodle. Sending love ❀️

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-May-25 20:24:16

Dear Doodle,
Thinking about you today.
My mum felt very safe in the hospice.
I'm sure your dear Mr.D did too.
X

Grandmafrench Thu 15-May-25 20:53:00

Your sad date is marked in my diary, Doodle. We lost a dear friend on the same day. I shall be thinking of you and know that you’ll be glad of your wonderful family support to get you through. Hold each other tight and remember all the good times 😘

Very impressed that, finally, Kaimoana’s tootsies are getting the care they deserve. Until I found a wonderful Podiatrist and emerged β€˜walking on air’ I had no idea how wonderful a feet treatment could be.

I’m sure we’re all waiting, agog, to hear what havoc Neine ( and her bosoms?) might have caused at the Underwear Emporium? πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«. Hopefully no insults and no injuries? I was going to suggest running a book on the sizing without a tape measure, but I know you’ve had a wretched time and now that you’ve managed to sort out your arrangements for the better, decided to not involve any guessing games.

Beautiful day here. He and I repainted and repaired the garden gate, whilst being shouted at by a cross Mummy Redstart whose fat offspring had crash-landed in a bush close to where we were struggling! Maybe a photo of the Swallows and their nests they have re-modelled will impress?

Sleep well and wake refreshed,
Goodnight all 😴

CherryCezzy Thu 15-May-25 21:13:34

Doodle. I remember the relief and peace that brief time in the hospice gave Mr D and you and how relieved I was that he had it
❀️ to you dearest Doodle X

Can I just pop in to share this lovely short video of a photographer who for many years has been documenting London. You don't need to read the article if you don't want to. His little video speaks for itself.
