Reading through these reminded me of so many songs I had forgotten!
Last time we took the car to England I brought back a lot of records that my late husband and I had collected and I am listening to them all over again! Too many to mention but all sorts from Cliff, The Stones ,Gordon Lightfoot, Moody Blues to various "Folk" bands and individuals! A very varied and much loved collection!

'Hello' by Lionel Richie. It was given to me by the Wonderful Man when he and I first got together and he had an uncharacteristically romantic moment.
'Have I told you lately that I love you' by Van Morrison - sung to me at my 50th birthday party by the WM and causing even my hard boiled mother to shed a tear.
'The first time ever I saw your face.' by Roberta Flack still brings me out in goose bumps as does 'Killing me softly'.

Constantly by Cliff Richard. I am not a Cliff fan, but it was the right song at the right time, so if ever I hear it - and I rarely do. I am 20 and heart broken again.

Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys. I was living in Geneva when it was released - 1967 I think - and had a rather dashing boyfriend with a red MG convertible. We decided to drive along the dual carriageway to Lausanne with the top down on the car - not me. This record came on and it thrilled me, I thought it was wonderful. I felt very sophisticated in this cool car, handsome boyfriend, music and the sunshine - my long hair in a scarf - remember wearing scarves?
Every time I hear it I am back again in my youth, once it stops I'm back to being an old person of course, but it brings back a nice moment.

It's called Space Oddity, LizG, and it is warbled by David Bowie, which is a good reason for not liking it... I'm on your side!

I can't bear the song with the words 'Ground control to Major Tom' (not sure if this is the actual name)! Hear it is being re-released so I think the radio will have to be switched off for the next six months at least. Love the Kinks though or 'My Sweet Lord'
.

Rich Hall sang a very funny song about Bob Dylan tonight [pointing out that he's been to see him 3 times recently and he's absolutely awful]. I've ordered some of those Lp sized picture frames so I can put them on the wall and change the album depending on what mood I'm in, so I went in the loft the other day to go through the old record collection. Found some I didn't know I had but didn't have others that I thought I did confused.I'm probably going to go into one of my indecisive frames of mind where I spend days just changing the albums [like moving flower pots round the garden]. Tried to find Sara on utube but it's been blocked and don't think it's on my Bob Dylan 'Best Of' cd sad. Will have a quick blast of 'Masters of War' instead wink...

I share your feelings about Sara Tegan although rumour has it Bob was a bit of a s**t to her in reality. We have all known men who can talk the talk.... Perhaps not so eloquently as Bob but it comes down to actions in the end grin

Tegan Tue 14-May-13 23:15:56

Bob Dylan's Sara. I find it so sad that they didn't stay together. How can you not still be in love with someone when a song like that has been written about your relationship sad. Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. How can anyone write such beautiful words.

Not sure why cigarette is in blue. No link intended!

grumppa Tue 14-May-13 22:39:22

Agree about GAS feetlebaum, not least Fred Astaire singing "Night and Day" to Ginger Rogers in The Gay Divorcee, and offering her a highly suggestive 'Cigarette?' as she sinks on to a seat at the end of the dance.

If paradise was half as nice as heaven that you take me to, who needs paradise when I've got you ... Amen Corner. Other than that - Sook, you wrote my list. smile

Henrietta - I know just what you mean. 'Everlasting Love' ...I was 18 and in Nottingham. Not a good time for me, and hearing the song brings it all rushing back. But then, Mungo Jerry's 'In the Summertime' propels me into the hot summer of 1970 in London.....wonderful times! smile

Henrietta Tue 14-May-13 21:29:58

I loved the Love Affair and Everlasting Love is one of my favourites. Funny how the opening bars of a song stir something inside you. Whenever I hear the opening bars of God Only Knows by the Beach Boys I get a tingly sensation in my stomach and I have to stop whatever I'm doing and listen. (Too much information there)! Also love Motown, 4 Tops/Temptations etc etc

susieb755 Tue 14-May-13 21:11:20

I love my music, its so hard to pick a favourite - but from my compilation disc....

Dylan - Tangled up in Blue
Don Henley - Boys of Summer
Cream - Badge
Neil Young - Old Man
Buffalo Springfield - For What its Worth
Roy Harper - One of Those Days in England
Kinks - Days
Litttle Feat- Dixie Chicken
Michelle Shocked- Anchorage
Art Brut - Post Soothing out
Alex Harvey - Framed

Also agree wholeheartedly with fast car and norwegian wood

Lena Horne New Fangled Tango, I think is one of the sexiest songs , much underated http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akZm0rU-UnE

I'll check that one out Ana, thanks for the tip smile

bookdreamer Tue 14-May-13 20:46:15

Loved the love affair! Loved Motown as well. Four tops "reach out". Far too many to list. 60's and early 70's were great.

Paint it black, Rolling Stones
Norwegian wood, Beatles
Heard it through the grapevine

Ana Tue 14-May-13 20:43:31

nightowl, Agnetha's current single, When you Really Loved Someone, is very good IMO. She sounds wonderful still.

nightowl Tue 14-May-13 20:40:37

Sara by Bob Dylan. Fire and Rain by James Taylor, and Soldiers. Suzanne by Leonard Cohen holds very special memories. I keep thinking of more.

NfkDumpling Tue 14-May-13 20:39:18

Annie's song and John Denver stuff and a sneaky liking for large helpings of Abba.

nightowl Tue 14-May-13 20:32:53

I love that one too Eloethan. I see Agnetha has come out of hiding at last and she is looking good. Haven't heard any of her songs yet though.

Grindos Tue 14-May-13 20:30:12

I've just made a playlist of my favourite songs which I've put on my mobile phone. Most of them are rather sad ballads, mostly 60s. Beatles - Things We Said Today, Because, Across The Universe. Bette Midler - From A Distance. Some Elvis, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens. I shall listen to it when I'm in hospital after my heart surgery. And when I do the ironing. And on the bus.

Pete Tue 14-May-13 19:30:35

Everlasting Love (The Love Affair)

Candle in the wind (Elton John)

Too many to list smile
