I have just pre-ordered the new Penguin edition of Wendell Berry's The Peace of Wild Things anthology.

This is one of his - and one of my favourites. I have asked for this to be read at my funeral. Thought some folk might enjoy it too, so here it is:

The Peace of Wild Things
by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

What a gorgeous poem Luckygirl . Thank you so much for posting it. Almost every line resonates with me, especially in these troubled times.

I read that poem this weekend in the Telegraph and copied it out this morning because I thought it was so lovely.
I have never heard of the poet before.

He is over the papers just now because of the new Penguin edition.

That is a lovely poem. I come into the peace of wild things. As one who spends much time by still waters I can attest to the truth of it.

Absolutely beautiful ............speaking to the inner soul in search of that tranquility that is found in abundance in nature itself.
A poem to treasure.

So beautiful, and so true. There is peace to be found in nature. I collect poetry and shall put this one in my collection.
