If you need cheering up in these wintry Brexit days here's one that always makes me smile:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq5yHdVKSQs
Even Bob Dylan smiles at times.

Grannyknot Sun 18-Nov-18 21:35:30

smile

gillybob Sun 18-Nov-18 22:38:15

It made me smile too ! Thank you Fennel smile I love/d the Travelling Willburys

Makes me wanna twist and shout !

Luckygirl Sun 18-Nov-18 22:40:28

I have a wonderful recording of Bryn Terfel singing "If I was a Rich Man" with his usual character and verve - it is so funny as he is singing it in Welsh.

gillybob Sun 18-Nov-18 22:41:24

Meant to add my favourite songs .... “tweeter and the monkey man” and “heading for the light”, “last night” ..... and all the rest too.
Love love loved Tom Petty . Thank you again Fennel smile

gillybob Sun 18-Nov-18 22:43:44

“I asked her to marry me, she smiled and pulled out a knife.....” what’s not to love ?

SillyNanny321 Mon 19-Nov-18 10:40:41

Status Quo forever 😀

albertina Mon 19-Nov-18 10:57:01

Charlie Drake singing My boomerang won't come back, Bernard Cribbins singing Right said Fred stuff like that.

mabon1 Mon 19-Nov-18 11:10:20

Why is it funny because he is singing in Welsh please? Welsh is his first language, the first language of our family and friends. My children and grandchildren all speak Welsh, they attended Welsh Medium Schools, and all have done well in life, they live all over the place including England. Are you a monoglot I wonder or a bigot maybe?

Growing0ldDisgracefully Mon 19-Nov-18 11:19:03

Dire Straits' Industrial Disease, and George Formby's priceless classics!

Nanny27 Mon 19-Nov-18 11:22:50

No need to get your knickers in a twist mabon. We can all appreciate that Bryn Terfel is a hugely talented singer and often uses the Welsh language to add humour to his performances. Your children's schooling is not terribly relevant.

Luckygirl Mon 19-Nov-18 11:23:59

Oh dear! Please do not read anything negative into this about Welsh people, Welsh language, Welsh roads, Welsh beaches/houses/toilet paper............

It is very very funny, entirely as Bryn intended it to be. Brilliant performance - he sings it with a twinkle in his eye!

I should go and lie down in a darkened room if I were you.

Peardrop50 Mon 19-Nov-18 11:37:11

great balls of fire

Creese Mon 19-Nov-18 11:54:45

Aepgirl Mon 19-Nov-18 11:59:24

Oh dear, Monday morning grumpy grannies!

EllanVannin Mon 19-Nov-18 12:00:06

"The fastest milkman in the West "Benny Hill.( Ernie.)

EllanVannin Mon 19-Nov-18 12:01:17

The " Two Ronnies " putting their own words to marching songs------so clever.

GabriellaG Mon 19-Nov-18 12:08:09

Winnie Atwell playing the Black and White Rag.

sodapop Mon 19-Nov-18 12:11:15

Yes definitely the two Ronnies EllenVannin their songs were so clever and I loved them when they sang their own words in the choir.

EllanVannin Mon 19-Nov-18 12:16:49

Sodapop I do so miss their " Christmas shows ".It was the highlight of the season along with Morecambe and Wise. sad

Willow10 Mon 19-Nov-18 12:19:31

I think it was an Irish man who used to sing about writing letters home to his mother and also one about the 12 days of Christmas. Used to have me in fits of laughter. I wish I could remember who it was - does anyone on here know?

Blinko Mon 19-Nov-18 12:20:03

Kenneth Williams signing a song in cod French, can't remember what it's called...ah thanks, Google, it's Ma Crepe Suzette. Brilliant!

Blinko Mon 19-Nov-18 12:21:34

wordcount-richmonde.blogspot.com/2010/12/kenneth-williams-crepe-suzette-song.html

Hope this link works.

gillybob Mon 19-Nov-18 12:28:12

Q: How many grannies does it take to ruin a perfectly happy thread?

A: Just the one hmm

Mildred Mon 19-Nov-18 12:28:18

Willow was it Val Doonican (? Spelling) wore sweaters. My Mum loved him too. Paddy McGinty’ goat is one that comes to mind.

gulligranny Mon 19-Nov-18 12:28:28

Joyce Grenfell -" Stately as a Galleon", I just love that one.

Rosebank16 Mon 19-Nov-18 12:29:24

Without doubt for me is Pharel Williams "Happy"
I went to see Stevie Wonder in Hyde Park with my youngest son & Pharel Williams was a supporting act. I hear this I am transported to that lovely, summers day in London

Daddima Mon 19-Nov-18 12:32:04

willow10 , it was Frank Kelly ( Father Jack in Father Ted)

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 12:33:48

Willow - Was it Allan Sherman?

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 12:35:29

And another very old one from me - I think the little man looks like John Bercow:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=li0qPwn4U8Y

joannapiano Mon 19-Nov-18 12:51:33

I love Pharell Williams “Happy”, too. Lovely to dance round the kitchen and sing along!

Jane10 Mon 19-Nov-18 12:53:42

Anything by Glenn Miller instantly has me smiling!

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 12:56:14

Jane10 me too smile.

Cherrytree59 Mon 19-Nov-18 13:25:30

Fennel thank you
I'm smiling at the memory of my Grandpa standing in front of a little black and white TV dancing (his version) to Andy Stewart's
Donald where's yer troosers? 💃

Nanos Mon 19-Nov-18 13:33:04

Flower of Scotland sung at rugby internationals.
Love it!

Kim19 Mon 19-Nov-18 13:49:38

Was wondering if we could use our mature savvy and ignore anyone who makes a snide comment? Witty and accurate though many of the retorts are, I feel that's just what the sad people are looking for. My Mother used to say 'ignore them and they'll go away'. Lovely and nostalgically fun contributions in the main for which I thank you all GNs.

BRedhead59 Mon 19-Nov-18 13:50:21

Brilliant - They are still playing "The White Cliffs of Dover" in most care homes. Won't it be great when they are playing classics like this?

GabriellaG Mon 19-Nov-18 13:58:38

That OP 'song' is sooo boring, tuneless...and daft.

sarahellenwhitney Mon 19-Nov-18 14:07:32

What a boring place the world would be without such a variety of languages.

Minerva Mon 19-Nov-18 14:08:53

gillybob, two now I think 🤔

Camelotclub Mon 19-Nov-18 14:14:27

I think Jeff Lynne is one of the most talented performers going. ELO are great, fantastic songs.

I have lots of songs that make me smile but coming home from M&S today I had one on that made me weep buckets: the theme to Out of Africa. I don't know why it makes me so sad, I've never been to Africa or had any connection!

grannyqueenie Mon 19-Nov-18 14:14:33

“Just another manic Monday ....” springs to mind.....perhaps with more of grimace than a smile after reading a few comments here!!

gillybob Mon 19-Nov-18 14:21:45

I've posted a link to The Last Resort by The Eagles (under the title Paradise). It has always been one of my favourite Eagles songs but given recent events in California, the words are much more meaningful and very sad.

Luckygirl Mon 19-Nov-18 14:33:14

Who was that deadpan man who wrote slightly rude but very funny songs? - Jake Thackery - it has just come back to me! I liked him.

Willow10 Mon 19-Nov-18 14:35:50

Daddima - it was Frank Kelly, thank you! Just listened to your link and it was still just as funny!

oldbatty Mon 19-Nov-18 14:56:58

Hey you with the pretty face/Welcome to the human race

allsortsofbags Mon 19-Nov-18 15:17:20

gullygranny My GD gets me to do my version of Joyce Grenfell's "Stately as a Galleon" it has always made me smile.

So many songs here make me smile and I can always manage a little jig to Eddie Grants "Walking on Sunshine".

Thanks for a lovely thread. I've smiled at many of the suggestions, not a bad thing on a cold and rainy Monday afternoon.

annifrance Mon 19-Nov-18 15:19:43

Always Tom Lehrer, especially Vatican Rag. Harry Belafonte and someone There's A Hole In My Bucket. Someone doing Hole In The Ground.

Nanny41 Mon 19-Nov-18 15:26:50

I love Morecombe and Wise "Give me sunshine" its a nice catchy song, always makes me happy.

Nanny41 Mon 19-Nov-18 15:29:39

I hope the"grumpy grannies" have settled down and are enjoying their day.

Arto1s Mon 19-Nov-18 15:38:23

Gee! The OP asked what songs made us smile, not to criticise others’ choices. For myself, there are too many to name, but I must mention Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls - love it!

MissAdventure Mon 19-Nov-18 15:47:12

Willow10 Mon 19-Nov-18 17:33:55

Love that Minimoon! Great post Fennel, you made (most) people smile today. Just what we need.

Magicmaggie Mon 19-Nov-18 17:38:42

Fennel
Thanks so much for posting the link to Allan Sherman
singing “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadder”
I loved hearing it again, and although had’nt heard it
since 1963, remembered all the words!!,

Spangles1963 Mon 19-Nov-18 17:42:10

If I hear 'In the mood' by the Glen Miller band,it always makes me smile. Apart from that, anything by Thin Lizzy is guaranteed to bring a smile to my face,as I hero worshipped them as a teenager. -I'm just an ageing rocker

1974cookie Mon 19-Nov-18 17:50:30

Oh so many to choose from...
National Express by The Divine comedy.
Christine by Miss X ( remember Christine Keeler ? )
Shut up by Madness with one of the best lines " I'm as honest as the day is long, the longer the daylight the less I do wrong".
Happy by Pharell is well up on the list. As soon as the song starts, I am smiling away to myself.
What a lovely thread. Thank You Fennel.

BBbevan Mon 19-Nov-18 18:23:39

Luckygirl ! I come from a Welsh speaking family, and I would find that song funny. Some people are very quick to take offence when none was intended. A Jewish character singing in Welsh. !

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 19:23:56

I couldn't find the link in Welsh.
(Not offended).

BBbevan Mon 19-Nov-18 19:53:57

I know this is going to sound strange but I like Leonard Cohen . I always feel a lot better after listening to him .

EllanVannin Mon 19-Nov-18 20:18:51

The mother in Dinner Ladies. Fabulous actress Julie Walters.

Jillyblom59 Mon 19-Nov-18 20:24:56

White Trash Wedding, by The Dixie Chicks. Love it ❤️

We used to love Jake Thackray's Sister Josephine.

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 21:10:30

If you need to pick up your feet and get going, I forgot about this one:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK1UC-vCUZY
But not until tomorrow.

Fennel Mon 19-Nov-18 21:13:55

ps BBevan - I've tried to like his songs, but find them very sad.

starbird Mon 19-Nov-18 21:47:32

Love Glenn Miller too, just put ‘In the mood’ on now - used to do a line dance to it - happy days.

Heard ‘My boy Lollipop’ on desert Island discs recently - that made me smile.

starbird Mon 19-Nov-18 21:48:48

Also love ‘Dancing in the Street’ - Mick Jagger and David Bowie

MissAdventure Mon 19-Nov-18 21:56:15

3 Little Birds by Bob Marley. smile

Gaggi3 Mon 19-Nov-18 22:18:03

annifrance, I love Tom Lehrer, too, all his songs anarchic and funny.

Jane10 Mon 19-Nov-18 22:26:23

Some great ones here. Tom Lehrer of course!
I love Cab Calloway, trad jazz, reggae, Strauss waltzes, Bix Beiderbeck, so much and so varied but all make me smile.

MissAdventure Mon 19-Nov-18 22:27:17

I'm not really one for 'happy' songs. A lot of them almost make me gag.
This one though..
youtu.be/YYOKMUTTDdA

Johnbarr Mon 19-Nov-18 22:41:02

Bob Dylan never looked happier than when he was with The Travelling Wilburrys.

Lilypops Mon 19-Nov-18 23:02:47

Always rely on Mabon1 to make a snidy unpleasant comment on any thread eh Gillybob,!!

LynW Tue 20-Nov-18 10:55:42

Side Saddle - piano piece by Russ Conway. Never fails to raise my spirits. In fact I like it so much it’s the ring tone on my mobile.

Fennel Tue 20-Nov-18 12:15:56

I remember that one Lyn. For me it's the lively rhythms and beat that lift my spirits, as well as the words.

moggie57 Tue 20-Nov-18 13:28:17

louis armstrong .what a wonderful world..

Greyduster Tue 20-Nov-18 14:06:19

Can I admit to never having seen The Travelling Wilberys? 😳? But I certainly enjoyed that! Setting aside Tom Lehrer’s entire repertoire, one song that always makes me smile is Jake Thakrays “La-de-dah”.

Blue45Sapphire Tue 20-Nov-18 14:57:48

Morecambe and Wise singing 'Bring me Sunshine'. DD and DSil had it as they walked down the aisle after their wedding!

Day6 Tue 20-Nov-18 17:31:23

Quite by accident and when browsing my Prime music store I came across Billy Cotton and Kathy Cotton singing "Thanks For the Memory".

I have very eclectic musical tastes but this brought me right back to the 1950s and days as a child, sitting in a kitchen armchair next to the wireless, as Mum cooked. I can hear her singing along right now. Billy Cotton's Bandstand was the programme, maybe?

It made me well up and smile.

Day6 Tue 20-Nov-18 17:31:49

Doh! Kathy Kay

Fennel Tue 20-Nov-18 17:37:56

"louis armstrong .what a wonderful world.."
I was thinking of posting that. In fact anything by louis.
He had that facial expression. I cried when he died.

Fennel Tue 20-Nov-18 17:43:31

We used to listen to them on the wireless too, Day6.

BBbevan Tue 20-Nov-18 17:59:08

Nymphs and Shepherds, sung by the Luton girls choir always makes me smile.
1) because it reminds me of Children's Favourites on the radio
and 2) because I envisage all those buxom girls in their gym slips. Just as I was then.

Izabella Wed 21-Nov-18 10:41:37

For me it would have to be Pink Floyds Bike Song from the album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Iv'e got a bike, you can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could but I borrowed it.............

As the owner of a 'shopping' bike with basket and panniers my friends shout this out when I whizz past! One day on my other one, a MTB, I was doing a tricky downhill and a friend was playing Ride of the Valkyries on her iPhone which had us all in stitches.

Growing old disgracefully grin

Izabella Wed 21-Nov-18 10:54:07

Needless to say - the heavy metal version with Domane.

Izabella Wed 21-Nov-18 10:55:00

Domine Hit send too soon

Parsley3 Wed 21-Nov-18 13:06:19

Has anyone listened to The Sick Note by the Dubliners?
It is absolutely hilarious. 😂

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Nov-18 13:40:06

Hot Hot Hot by Buster Poindexter
Happy - Pharrel Williams
Rock DJ - Robbie Williams. These all make me smile.

Moon River - Andy Williams
I had a Dream - Abba
Slipping through my fingers - Abba These all make me cry.

Fennel Wed 21-Nov-18 18:36:25

You're obviously younger than me GrannyGravy but I can see why you like your first one. Just daft!
Another favourite of mine is Fats Waller, but before the time of most of you.
This one reminds me of when my younger sister was born
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADuKbK84nHI&t=86s

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Nov-18 18:57:01

Hot Hot Hot is very significant for Husband and I - we only had a “wedding breakfast” (actually a 5 hour lunch with immediate family and a few close friends) we went straight to the airport then flew to the Caribbean and it was our “first dance” 🤣🤣

We had children first and thought we should marry!!!

lemongrove Wed 21-Nov-18 19:06:17

Happy (Pharrel Williams) is definitely a feelgood song, also
Electric Avenue ( Eddie Grant)
Walking On Sunshine,
Blueberry Hill ( Fats Domino)
smile

Sophiesox Wed 21-Nov-18 19:18:17

At the moment, Amy Macdonald, ‘Woman of The World’ gives me a lift. I love the Travelling Wilburys too!
