Long shot! Magazine story from ` Jackie` years ago! Hardly culture but...

This must have been in the `60s or early `70s.

I read one of their soppy stories about a girl musing that she was `the queen of the castle`. Throughout the story she quoted lines from a (made up?) poem about a castle in Spain. It has been on my mind ever since, obviously I didn`t keep my copy.
I would love to know the full poem. Did any other GNs get this magazine then or remember the story?

I progressed from Bunty to Petticoat. I was a Bunty club member, still have my Scottie dog badge.
I well remember the Four Mary’s, Toots, The Dancing Life of Moira Kent, another ballet story, Lorna Drake, they were very into ballet themes.
Also stories often featured children being orphaned and then brought up by cruel step parents. I wallowed in these morbid tales, always glad I still had my lovely mum and dad.
Also loved the Bunty cut-out wardrobe that was on the back cover. Always dressing her up and having paper fashion shows.

Was it definitely Jackie? Wasn't there a mag called Bunty around at that time? Ah, looking on line I see there are loads. This might help jintycomic.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/remembrance-of-things-past/

I used to get Jackie. Also Twinkle, look in Smash Hits and Osmonds World at various ages

Have you tried googling the quote you remember?
The only thing is I am guessing it is mullion windows not mullein.
Mullein is a flower, mullion windows are an architectural thing

Oh, 'Jackie'! Where would we all be without the quaint advice of Cathy & Claire?

Ha!Ha!Ha!

The story the poster describes sounds rather like: "I Capture the Castle", which is a book by Dodie Smith. (Also a film.)

Theoddbird Mon 28-Oct-19 11:23:46

I had a letter published in it once. I was so excited.

I was a 'Twinkle' reader, and only graduated onto 'Jackie' for a little while before a new wave of girls' magazines appeared.

Then I used to read 'Pink'.

My sister used to get Jackie mag & I used to have Blue Jeans mag. Does anyone remember that one? As younger girls my 2 sisters has Judy & Tammy & I had Bunty. Mum used to pick up all the mags on a Saturday morning when she did her weekly shop & none of us girls were allowed our mags until my mum had read all of them first! ?

Don't remember that story I'm afraid. But I did love the Jackie. I used to cover my school books with pictures from it. I can still remember my picture of Justin Hayward. Happy days.

I have a collection of old Jackie magazines along with loads of old womens magazines from the 1920s to the 1960s so much for my husband, telling me they were rubbish and needed to go into the recycling, I have started knitting a lot of the 1940s and 50s patterns and the recipes can be hilarious

Chestnut

Have just googled your magazine site. Sadly, Petticoat mags do not even come up!

One thing I do know about Jackie is that a very young Jacqueline Wilson (of Tracy Beaker fame) started her career at Jackie The other thing is that it made my younger sister obsessed about spots and boys.

PamelaJ1 Mon 28-Oct-19 08:33:22

Chestnut, did you know that or did you google the words?
Hope it’s the right one.

dogsmother Mon 28-Oct-19 08:21:32

Wow! Love it, along with “words” so that I could get the lyrics to all the pop songs and practice and sing along.
So many years ago ....

I had a collection of Jackies that stood about 12" high. I don't think they could ever have become valuable, they were to well thumbed !

One leg of my bed broke of in the night and I put the pile in it's place. Stayed like that for a few days until mum and dad bought me a new bed.

Was it Meadowsweet by William Allingham?

Calendargirl - check out the prices here! I don't think many are in mint condition.

Calendargirl Sun 27-Oct-19 20:22:35

Oh Chestnut surely they’re only worth that if they’re in mint condition?

I was a Petticoat reader. As I mentioned on another thread, my collection is in the loft. Sadly, rather tatty now, cannot imagine worth much more than the 1/- (one shilling) each they cost some 50 odd years ago. But good luck to anyone with Jackie’s if they are worth a good price with a collector.

....where I burnt my entire 4 year collection of Jackie Magazine in one go...
And now they're worth about £100 each. Oh if only we knew then what we know now!

SynchroSwimmer Sun 27-Oct-19 19:14:02

Happy memories!
Oh how I regret - memories of standing around a ritual bonfire at the bottom of the garden, aged 17, where I burnt my entire 4 year collection of Jackie Magazine in one go...

Sara65 Sun 27-Oct-19 17:52:46

Can’t help I’m afraid, but I too loved Jackie.
