The suggested format is that this is a discussion thread about the places along the route, links allowed in moderation, any food mentioned is vegan. Sort of like a treasure hunt for information, yet no teams, people sharing what they find.

That is lovely.
In the YouTube videos there are lots of people with a deep love of Germany.
It's easy to see why.

MissAdventure Thu 07-Jul-22 22:05:39

I'm going to do the Offenbach walk now.

I meant to ask, stardreamer, do you have a love of Germany in particular?
Any reason why? (Don't say, if it's too intrusive) smile

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 00:30:41

Not as such.

When we had the Astra analogue satellite television in the 1990s I was looking through the channels and I saw and heard some volksmusik and I liked the style and so I then often watched volksmusik programmes and I have found volksmusik on YouTube and I enjoy watching it, sometimes I just have it on and just here it when I am doing something else on the computer.

With the internet I can often find the lyrics and then get an idea of the meaning using Google translate.

I often put a playlist of music on full screen while I am eating my meals, as I do not need to concentrate on what is on as I would if I had the news on.

I am interested in the history of printing, particularly the incunabula period, and Mainz was where printing with moveable type started.

I was looking through a brochure on cruises and the one from Mainz along the river Main looked interesting with its historic towns that are not usually mentioned.

I am really enjoying this virtual cruise as participants are including things of which I never knew and might well have not known about otherwise, such as the side trip to Heidelberg and going into the church that was in the walking tour of Heidelberg, and the Palm Garden in Frankfurt.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 00:36:23

I really enjoyed the church.
That beautiful woodwork and the ceiling.

The beautiful palm garden and that boat trip.
I swear I could almost feel the breeze on my face.

I found myself thinking "Oh good, it's not too hot, weatherwise, to be on the boat. smile

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 00:40:21

It really is the whole atmosphere, though.
It's all rather quirky and quaint, and I love that.
The walk around the palm garden that you posted was really relaxing.

I have found this.

It provides information of some of the places on our route.

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 09:17:19

Der Goldene Delfin is 5 star too. smile

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 10:53:49

It seems that we could add side trips to Rothenburg and to Ochsenfurt when we get to Würzburg, leaving Der Goldene Delfin moored at Würzburg while we travel overland on the side trips.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 11:23:47

We could indeed, if you're happy to organise it all, that is. smile
My brain doesnt feel up to much, lately.

I'm a passive passenger, I'm afraid.

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 11:56:44

Well, there are various suggestions from various people and we are working them into the experience.

At any time anyone reading this thread can be active or passive, switching between them as they choose.

Just imagining we are on a river cruise.

We need to decide whether to stay in Franfurt for the moment, do a side trip, or for Der Goldene Delfin to leave her mooring and proceed on her journey along the river Main with us on board.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 12:35:51

Do you think there are places we haven't seen, yet?
If not, then back on Der Goldene Delfin is fine with me. (The golden dolphin? Or is that too simplistic a,guess?)

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 13:09:37

Yes, it is The Golden Dolphin.

Her sister ship that took us from Mannheim to Heidelberg, and which is still moored at Heidelberg at present, is The Silver Dolphin.

So we can wait a while and if others agree or nobody suggests anything more to do while we are moored at Franfurt then we can move on to Hanau.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 13:21:00

That sounds a good idea, thank you. smile

StarDreamer Fri 08-Jul-22 16:02:44

Der Goldene Delfin has now left Frankfurt to travel the around fourteen miles to Hanau, at around ten miles per hour.

As we travel, here is a video about Hanau.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 19:44:17

That was interesting about the brothers Grimm.
My favourite stories as a little girl.

StarDreamer Sat 09-Jul-22 15:54:40

This video features a statue near the start. You might like to stop the video at 8 seconds in to have a good look at it.

Can you work out what it is?

LINK > Walking around Hanau City Centre (19 minutes 6 seconds)

The video shows several items of public art.

What is that one? Are we going closer? Oh, we're not.

But we do later, so it works out. We get a close up look.

StarDreamer Sat 09-Jul-22 16:25:36

What is this about?

Could it be something related to this man?

JackyB Sat 09-Jul-22 18:23:08

No, the Moritz commemorated by the sculpture is Moritz by his first name. His surname was Oppenheimer.

MissAdventure Sat 09-Jul-22 19:14:47

So, the pied piper, maybe?
Or is that the dancing statue I've been reading about?

Or am I totally wrong on all counts? smile

Thank you.

Is this him?

I have just found that the pied piper is a tale from the Grimm brothers.

I had heard of the Brothers Grimm.

I have known of various stories since childhood.

But I did not know that at least some of the stories were from the Grimm collection, nor which ones.

I did not realise until now that the story of the pied piper is from the Grimm collection.

I remember from reading somewhere years ago that the story of the pied piper is a conflation of two separate things some years apart.

One of a ratcatcher and a dispute over paying him.

The second that a boy from Hamelin, when grown up became a priest, and later a bishop with land quite a long way to the east. Alas, there were not many people living there and the bishop wanted to have more people there. So he sent a representative to the town where he had grown up to invite people to move to there and have a better future. So the people who were settled in Hamelin did not go, but lots of young people did, so probably not children, more the young adults, and never returned. If I remember correctly there is something about to the present day there are surname commonalities of people in Hamelin and the other area.

StarDreamer Sat 09-Jul-22 23:50:43

I think, but I am not certain, that the statue at the very start of the video is of little red riding hood and the wolf.
