I think a lot of people went off Beckham when the email was leaked in which he criticised the Honours Committee, using very choice language, for not giving him a knighthood.

Joe Lycett
(200 Posts)Joe Lycett has apparently shredded £10,000 of his own money as an objection to David Beckham’s involvement with the Qatar World Cup. Makes me sad to think what good could have been done with this money.
Far better to have done some good with it the fool.

It’s being reported now that it’s not certain whether Kane and Bale will be wearing the ‘one love’ arm bands
Nope. They aren’t wearing them.
They might be wearing ‘no discrimination’ ones instead.
I’m surprised that no footballers have boycotted the event.
I googled and I could only find a Finnish chap who refused to go to a friendly in Qatar in 2019
I think there are far better ways of protesting with £10.000 than burning it
David Beckham from all I read does a lot of charity work with his riches and I don’t think this challenge would bother him at all perhaps Joe Lycette should have thrown out a challenged to David Beckham to match his £10,000 to donate to some Humanitarian cause of their choosing That way they could have worked together and it wouldn’t have been so easy for
Beckham to ignore it and only a tiny fraction of his fee
Beckham has supported a lot of charities, yes; but some of it (at least) has been done for the PR.
When he played for Paris Saint Germain he would have lost something like 80% of his salary to tax, so with much fanfare he set up a children’s charity and donated all of his his salary to that, taking the minimum wage for himself, which was non-taxable. He then signed a lucrative deal to make money from the sale of shirts with his name on, and negotiated a chauffeur and free luxury hotel accommodation for himself and his family - a package worth more than the salary would have been, but not taxed as income. The headlines were about the millions he’d given to poor children, but the vast majority would have gone in tax anyway, and he still made millions from the sale of the shirts, which sold like hot cakes because of his popularity as a benefactor.
A publicity stunt? A generous gesture? A clever but cynical ploy to make him look good at little financial cost? You Decide. It certainly got him popularity pints though
The trouble is, Joe Lycett's demand amounted to blackmail, so Beckham could hardly agree to it.
Most of the comments I have read criticise Lycett for being an idiot when he could have done so much more good with that money. I wouldn't have said he's received popularity from it.
Joe Lycett said he would donate the £10,000 to gay football charities if Beckham pulled out of Qatar and if Beckham didn't he would shred it. So arguably Beckham is not only receiving millions of dollars from a country which persecutes gay people he also deprived gay charities of £10,000.
Elegran
Callistemon21 so as someone who supports all those projects, why is he also supporting this notorious regime. He is not donating money to them - but he is giving them his presence and tacit encouragement.
I don't know Elegran
Perhaps DB will donate the money to one of his favourite charities. Quietly.
I know that I've found Joe Lycett an irritant anyway so that may have coloured my judgement.
It may have attracted publicity both positive and negative, but there were better ways to do this than shred money which could have done some good.

No. Lateral thinking doesn't work in this case.
he also deprived gay charities of £10,000
Joe Lycett did that himself.
One thing for sure Lycett has achieved what he set out to achieve - at least on GN😄
It was an incredibly poorly thought out stunt. I fail to see what it achieves other than publicity for yet another attention seeking 'celebrity'. And one who is very irritating anyway.
I would have more respect if something beneficial to others had come out of it. So many other ways of helping a cause, benefitting others in need and bringing attention to it.
Throwing money away blatantly when so many are in dire straits is an awful thing to do, however it's done. Done in public it's shameful.
😂😂😂
He's certainly got plenty of attention!
He put me off the Sewing Bee because it tried to make it all about him.
There is no such thing as bad publicity.
That was in answer to Whitewave's post
He tried to make it all about him.
Apologies, Joe

Nothing to do with OP but I liked him on gsb and his consumer programme. I think he has integrity and donating to a charity while laudable would have done nothing to draw attention to beckham’s hypocrisy

To clarify: He tried to make the Sewing Bee all about him.
I've been watching Jeremy Vine. A guest has just mentioned how much of London is owned by Qatar.
The Shard, Harrods, Olympic Village, former US Embassy Building, One Hyde Park, Chelsea Barracks. 200 million pound home in Regent's Park, Canary Wharf Financial District, Claridges, The Berkley and The Connaught, shareholder in the London Stock Exchange, a stake in Camden Market. Also major shareholders of Sainsburys and Barclay's.
Manchester City is basically owned by a member of. the Royal Family in Abu Dhabi.
I'm sure there's lots of others .
Its a complex area. Joe has played a blinder as it's being discussed all over the place.
So… read the update from Joe Lycett. He certainly knows how to manipulate the media. It’s had everyone talking and his £10,000 had already been donated to charity before he did the video. The money shredded was fake. 😂😂

I've just seen it on Twitter! Funny guy. Brilliant PR.
Fool me once ...

I guessed that.
What would happen if every single player wore the armbands?
JL telling the truth about what he did. Or is he?

I’m pretty certain that it was real.
I’ll eat my England football scarf if it wasn’t.
And I totally agree with Jane re Beckham.
How exactly are people supposed to protest then these days?
The only person that Lysett has affected is himself.
Any suggestions?
Fanny Are you going to film yourself eating it, I’m sure we’d all enjoy watching that 😂 just teasing.

Exactly.
I'm working down the comments, and now realise that the money may not have been real. If so, Lycett should donate it to gay charities and take credit for it. He's still exposed Beckham as a hypocrite.
I don't have it in for DB, incidentally. I just think the indignation about all of this fails to take account of the massive PR machines behind a lot of this. JL probably came up with his stunt on his own, as it is full of pitfalls, but Beckham's is very clever and very effective. I'll be interested to see their next move.
Grannydarkhair, but I may just eat a fake football scarf… 🤔 🍴 🧣
And , I will, of course, give the genuine scarf to a good cause 😇
