Memories of the Swinging Sixties

Listening to Tony Blackburn and his "Sounds of the Sixties" show on a Saturday morning is something of a ritual for me. Great times. Many of the songs take me right back to sweet memories, one of which is "I'm into Something Good", released by Herman's Hermits back in 1964. Hear that and I'm back there at the school dance with my Biba dress, my Courreges boots and my then boyfriend. Wonder what happened to him? Do you have a particular song which conjures up a moment in time? Do tell.

I've just asked Alexa to play some of the songs mentioned in this post. They took me back to age 15 to 21. Great songs remembered.smile

The Byrds, All I really wanna do, conjures up A beautiful Summer's day on the back of my boyfriend's motorbike, long blonde hair flowing out behind me. Bliss...

Going into Biba on Kensington High Street almost every Saturday and buying anything really, because all the clothes were great and a good price. Once Barbara Helunuki was in there arranging all the clothes rails, another time The Four Tops were lounging on the sofas waiting for their girlfriends. I wish I'd kept those clothes now they would probably be worth some money.

I’m a 70’s girl so some I remember I did have older brothers! I still love ‘ Beatles songs though as they remind me of my big brothers getting ready to go out on a Saturday night.

I was just a little too young to be a proper hippie (Mum wouldn't have let me) but I remember hearing the Beatles sing All You Need is Love on the radio and it was so different to any music which had come before it. The sun always seemed to be shining and there was so much to look forward to.

I was a Beatles fan so that was a frenetic time for (mostly) girls in the 60’s.

But two songs that really resonate with me came later in my life - Mister Mister “Broken Wings” and Pet Shop Boys “West End Girls.” Still love those songs, because… 😊🥰😉

Every decade produces music I latch on to for enjoyment. There’s something about Glenn Miller music I really love, although I wasn’t born yet.
Born to dance!

I was a bit of a hippy. At school I loved Pete Brown and the Battered Ornaments. In fact I was sad to read that Pete Brown died recently. I loved Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. In fact I remember preordering Led Zeppelin 2 from a record shop in Reading. It’s amazing that Robert Plant still has the voice and the hair! The height of my hippiness was going to the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 - the one with Hendrix.

Yes, those were the days!

My brother is one year older than me . He passed the 11plus in 1963 and I passed it in 1964 so as a present our parents bought a brand new Dansette record player and the record 54321 by Manfred Mann. We nearly wore it out before we could afford any more records 😂

I think Buttercup Baby was by the Foundations and actually called Build Me Up Buttercup.

1967 Herman's Hermits, 'There's a kind of hush all over the world', had just got engaged and this was and still is our song!

I was 17, saggi and I wanted to go and get their autographs but we'd gone by coach and we had to go straight home.

I have just read this out to my husband who comes from Reading. He did the same as you. He has asked me to ask was it Rumbelows?
He also went to the Isle of White Festival in 1970 when the fence fell down!

The music was wonderful, but the teenage years were full of worry, anxiety, and examination stress
( School did not offer any help in those days, you were just expected to get on with it).
Lots of heartbreak, falling for the wrong boyfriends.

I would not want to go back to being a teenager again.

Silverlining48, most people misunderstand the lyrics to this song,,, my favourite! He finds out she's underage, so pushes her away b4 he can do something he would regret. He's actually being quite the gentleman. Have another listen, but really listen this time. I've been lucky enough to go to 3 of his concerts, and got to meet him at 1, and stole a k8ss b4 his wife stole him away from me. Never did like that woman!! 😂🤣😂💋❤️💋

Not Rumbelows. It was a funny little record shop in what used to be known as Smelly Alley off Broad Street.

If we want to go into offensive songs does anyone else remember Elvis and "Little Sister". That would be banned now! I can remember trying to learn how to jive to it (I was hopeless. so pleased when you could dance on your own)
Lyrics
Little sister, don't you-
Little sister, don't you-
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice, and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done
Well, I used to pull your pigtails
And pinch your turned-up nose
But you been a-growin'
And baby, it's been showin' from your head down to your toes

He did meet Priscilla when she was 14 and he was 24.

Witzend Wed 07-Jun-23 12:10:08

In a sunny back garden belonging to an old schoolfriend of dh - we were all students at the time.

Somewhere ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’ was playing (it was a Sunday) and dh’s friend came and sat on the grass beside me and said very happily, ‘Are you stoned?’
‘No.’
‘I am!’

Last time I saw him was at his 70th birthday bash - that would be 5 years ago now. 😀

I can remember thinking how strange that Priscilla’s parents were ok with the relationship. Yes Elvis was rich and famous but they were well off too. Her dad was something ‘high up’ in the army if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure that her father was happy; he was her step-father, I think, and Priscilla and Elvis kept in touch with letters after he went back to the US.

If I could shoose a time in my life to go back to it would be the last 1960s. I had my own flat and was qualified in a profession so had plenty of money to spend on myself.

I often went out straight from work and was so my locker was filled with dresses and shoes to change into. Sometimes I got changed at lunch time just for the hell of it.
