Memories of the Swinging Sixties

Listening to Tony Blackburn and his "Sounds of the Sixties" show on a Saturday morning is something of a ritual for me. Great times. Many of the songs take me right back to sweet memories, one of which is "I'm into Something Good", released by Herman's Hermits back in 1964. Hear that and I'm back there at the school dance with my Biba dress, my Courreges boots and my then boyfriend. Wonder what happened to him? Do you have a particular song which conjures up a moment in time? Do tell.

Though I was born in 1964 the 60s bring me so many memories growing up with the music, Dad used to sing If you go to San Fransisco by Scott Mackenzie to me when I was a baby as a lullaby.
waiting at a bus stop with mum I kept saying sing Rockapella to me mum everyone was in fits of laughter it was in fact Rock your fella!
I'm not sure if its 60s and 70s but I remember going to the local dairy to fetch fresh cream to put in mums home made cream horns with the radio playing The Walker Brothers on his little portable Bush radio that went everywhere with him it was in his lorry and had a warped front due to being on the dashboard in the sun but played great went everywhere picnics lorry etc

Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues. It was "our song." I cannot listen to it now he is gone.

We danced to it in the student union to the Moody Blues live - so many brilliant bands heard live at uni - we were very lucky.

I remember being at a friend's birthday party and winning the twisting competition to Twist and Shout. Her mother was an Oxford music graduate and strongly disapproved of The Beatles but my friend one the 45 rpm at a school bazaar so her mother had to give in for the party after much begging.

I loved the Monkees, watched their show on the telly every week. And remember seeing Sonny and Cher on TOTP singing ‘I got you babe’, thought it was wonderful and there and then started a lifelong love of Cher.
But one song that always takes me back is ‘pretty woman’ by Roy Orbison, am sitting in my then single aunties flat in Stockport, above the hairdressers she worked in, watching her dance to this whilst waiting to go out on a date. She was such a beautiful woman, reminded me of Liz Taylor, and looked the business with a beehive and mini skirt, I was just a kid and hung on her every word.
She died twenty years ago, after suffering dementia towards the end.
I love to remember her in her ‘pretty woman’ days.

Such a lovely tribute.

I remember mum disapproved Elvis, Priscilla's parents who she felt were daft because of the large age gap. She felt Priscills'a parents only allowed Elvis because of money, equally daft as age difference.

I'd no opinion, but assumed mum was correct.

I was a new mum, I don't remember much 60s music.

I was in Halls of Residence near Didsbury, but could never get tickets for TOTP. I am jealous. I saw the Hollies as the warm up band to the Stones back in London. Stones were wonderful, Hollies not so much.

We were just picked up one morning- no notice really. It was all a bit rushed. And you were pushed about in the studio because the cameras were so huge.

If I could shoose a time in my life to go back to it would be the last 1960s. I had my own flat and was qualified in a profession so had plenty of money to spend on myself.

I often went out straight from work and was so my locker was filled with dresses and shoes to change into. Sometimes I got changed at lunch time just for the hell of it.

I can remember thinking how strange that Priscilla’s parents were ok with the relationship. Yes Elvis was rich and famous but they were well off too. Her dad was something ‘high up’ in the army if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure that her father was happy; he was her step-father, I think, and Priscilla and Elvis kept in touch with letters after he went back to the US.

In a sunny back garden belonging to an old schoolfriend of dh - we were all students at the time.

Somewhere ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’ was playing (it was a Sunday) and dh’s friend came and sat on the grass beside me and said very happily, ‘Are you stoned?’
‘No.’
‘I am!’

Last time I saw him was at his 70th birthday bash - that would be 5 years ago now. 😀

He did meet Priscilla when she was 14 and he was 24.

If we want to go into offensive songs does anyone else remember Elvis and "Little Sister". That would be banned now! I can remember trying to learn how to jive to it (I was hopeless. so pleased when you could dance on your own)
Lyrics
Little sister, don't you-
Little sister, don't you-
Little sister, don't you kiss me once or twice
And say it's very nice, and then you run
Little sister, don't you do what your big sister done
Well, I used to pull your pigtails
And pinch your turned-up nose
But you been a-growin'
And baby, it's been showin' from your head down to your toes

I have just read this out to my husband who comes from Reading. He did the same as you. He has asked me to ask was it Rumbelows?
He also went to the Isle of White Festival in 1970 when the fence fell down!

Not Rumbelows. It was a funny little record shop in what used to be known as Smelly Alley off Broad Street.

Silverlining48, most people misunderstand the lyrics to this song,,, my favourite! He finds out she's underage, so pushes her away b4 he can do something he would regret. He's actually being quite the gentleman. Have another listen, but really listen this time. I've been lucky enough to go to 3 of his concerts, and got to meet him at 1, and stole a k8ss b4 his wife stole him away from me. Never did like that woman!! 😂🤣😂💋❤️💋

The music was wonderful, but the teenage years were full of worry, anxiety, and examination stress
( School did not offer any help in those days, you were just expected to get on with it).
Lots of heartbreak, falling for the wrong boyfriends.

I would not want to go back to being a teenager again.

Saggi

I saw that tour callistemon 21…I was 13
Or 14 at the time and remember now the Beatles were NOT the headliners !!
Chris Montez was great though ….not so much Tommy Roe !

I was 17, saggi and I wanted to go and get their autographs but we'd gone by coach and we had to go straight home.

1967 Herman's Hermits, 'There's a kind of hush all over the world', had just got engaged and this was and still is our song!

I think Buttercup Baby was by the Foundations and actually called Build Me Up Buttercup.

Thisismyname1953 Mon 05-Jun-23 20:53:58

My brother is one year older than me . He passed the 11plus in 1963 and I passed it in 1964 so as a present our parents bought a brand new Dansette record player and the record 54321 by Manfred Mann. We nearly wore it out before we could afford any more records 😂

Yes, those were the days!
