Well what a revelation. I went to my first Zumba class last night and it was FAB-U-LUS! I thought it would be too hard for me but I kept up well. I love the Salsa type music and the teacher was a reassuring size 18 but boy can she Zumba! I have arthritis in my spine and hips and am a size 16 and I was the oldest in the class so don't be put off. This one is really good fun and I have released my inner Shakira!!!

Jeanie you would be fine at Zumba Gold. It's not energetic at all. And you can just stop and have a rest if you want to!

I would love to go to the classes but I have to keep my heart rate below 130 unfortunately.

LullyDully when I first went to Zumba Gold I was recovering from a knee injury and took it very gently. I agree with NannaAnna - you can make it as high or low impact as you want. I think it helps my flexibility, it's great fun, and I can now be more energetic than when I started, as my knee is practically back to normal. At least give it a try and let us know how it goes.

I went to my first Zumba class yesterday, after work. It isn't 'Gold', just a regular class with a variety of ages. I don't think the category matters, because you can make it as high or low impact as you want.

Zumba Gold is terrific. I go every Monday morning and leave feeling energised, thinking to myself what a great way to start the week. When I was working at the NSPCC, I'd have back to back clients. That was certainly a tough start to the week.

I'd love to go to a Zumba class. I used to go to aerobics sessions several years ago and felt much better after them. I'm just wondering if an ordinary Zumba class (i.e. not specifically for older people) would be too strenuous as I'm a bit out of practice?

inspired!

Can I just have a plug for my local over-50's Zumba class please at TFD Gym in Wantage, Oxfordshire? I have been to these classes for 18 months now and last winter's skinny jeans are hanging off my rear end and my thighs! Result!

I have just been to my first Aqua Zumba class. It was terrific! The moves were very similar to those of Zumba Gold, but I am sure my arms will ache tomorrow. It is not a class for 50+ only, but I can thoroughly recommend it for our age group.

Yes, I have to say that our instructor is very vivacious and full of personality.
Always happy and smiling too. I think that this makes a big difference!!

Just returned from my first Zumba Gold class. It was good, but I felt I wanted to work a bit harder. I realize that I could have done, but I didn't want to appear a show-off as a first timer. Also I was disappointed that the instructor had no personality, so I will try an alternative venue next week. It is a bit crazy that two council leisure centres have the same class on the same day, same time, so the option of doing two a week is out.

I was 70 in Feb. and do Zumba Gold twice a week. LullyDully Our 'instructor' is always telling us not to push ourselves and to just do what we feel we can cope with. The main thing is that you're on the move and doing some exercise. HappyNanna £4.00 per hour session is what I pay. After 9 sessions we get the tenth free.

Stephen

Are you the Stephen who does Bums and Tums.
If you are thank you for your support in persuading the centre to make all classes mixed.

But is it suitable for a creaky 64 year old?

scottydownsouth Wed 17-Apr-13 08:32:16

I have been going to a gold class for a year and a half and it is brilliant. Enough to keep everything flexible without doing any damage. Sadly our instructor has moved on to pastures new and we really miss it.

What's Rhodesia got to do with it?
Or are you using an iPad?

I pay £24 per month at local sports centre for which I have unlimited use of Gym equipment, free swimming, free Pilates beginners8wk course and most other classes free.

shysal Tue 16-Apr-13 17:55:02

Happynanna, I looked up my local council classes today and prices are £5.80 standard and £3.90 for over 60s. There is a Gold class tomorrow so I am going to give it a try. I watched a few clips on Youtube and it looks quite gentle and easy to follow.

Thanks for the info re Zumba gold. We had a flyer through the door and thought I might try it before perhaps moving up to the 'normal' Zumba. She charges £4 a session (1 hr). Is this a typical price?

shysal Tue 16-Apr-13 12:48:33

I didn't know about the Gold version, I think I might give it a try. My coordination is ok but I am not a good wiggler, not very flexible - would the classes suit me? I have ordered a DVD to try first.

Ariadne Tue 16-Apr-13 12:12:49

They would indeed, gracesmum! Similar styles too.
