It is called Superfat and Superskinny. I find it an interesting programme, because again it is sympathetic to both the obese and the dangrously thin (but not anorexic). It takes both out of themselves to see someone eating like them and examines why they became that way and how to change it. The results vary sometimes during the follow-up period both make big changes in their weight, but not infrequently they struggle.Interestingly it seems to be the underweight people who have the most problems changing their eating habits and gaining weight.

I've seen both these programmes and they did differ greatly in the way the obese were treated. Can you imagine how desperate you must be to allow yourself to be photographed on national television in your underwear or skimpy sports wear? There's another awful programme, whose name escapes me where a skeletal person and a hugely overweight person are matched up and made to eat the other's set of meals. Gross. I watched these programmes once only then wondered why I was doing this?

shock blush hmm

I would like to see follow-ups at yearly intervals of people who have had gastric bands fitted.

I record and watch old USA Biggest Loser programmes on Pick TV. They show 2 episodes a day which makes the progress of the participants seem even more rapid than if it was a weekly show. The current series is just drawing to its conclusion and the results are always staggering. I admire the determination and wish I could have the opportunity, except they are usually trying to get down to my current weight. They often show previous winners and most have kept their weight off. Next week they are going to show some more of the old contestants, which will be interesting. Then they are starting on the Australian version of the show on Wednesday.
I often use my exercise bike or my dumbells whilst watching, so I don't feel like a couch potato.

I feel very uncomfortable about programmes that set up morbidly obese people as patsies to be challenged and to be humiliated on screen.

I picked up a programme earlier this week called 'A year ......' I cannot remember the rest but it dealt with overweight people and their weight loss journey over a year. The programme I saw dealt with a very overweight 30 something man, his gastric ban and his subsequent weight loss. It was sympathetic, understanding and examined why he was overweight, hoiw he coped with a gastric band and was very positive. If I was very obese I would find this type of programme much more encouragement to tackle my own problem than programmes that humiliate the participants.

I'm watching The Biggest Loser at the moment and last night caught a little of Big and Biggest. I watch these programmes to get inspiration to keep me on my diet and warn me of the terrible risks and problems I may have if I don't. The Biggest Loser is what the tabloids call ' car crash television' some unfortunate people who have managed to lose weight any other way subject themselves to a terrible humiliation and some excellent support in exercise (we do don't see the food bit on this programme). Last night they had to pull a double decker bus along a road in order to win the prize of a letter from home. This may be good TV but I strongly suspect the negative aspects of the course outweigh the benefits. would any of us subject ourselves to this? Big and Biggest showed two people taken to Crete to a family of hugely obese people which was supposed to be a detrrent. The most interesting thing was that we were told 1 in 3 Greek people are obese - are they eating their way out of the recession?
