Saw this programme on Channel 4 last night and it was fascinating and not the usual diet stuff. I know several people who claim never to eat much and can't understand why they have put on weight. This programme secretly film such people (with their consent) to surprise into realisation. For me compulsive viewing!

We ought to keep a diary recording everytime we put something to eat in our mouths - bet it would give us all a bit of a fright.Mind you it wasn't just their grazing but what type of food these people eat - loads of fatty stuff loaded with mayo and fat.

I recently went on holiday and at breakfast saw huge people eating ginormous portions. At night the same huge people were wading through ginormous 3 course meals. Not only that they were swathing it in salt as well. I couldn't believe my eyes! They probably thought they were eating normally or that as it was on offer, it must be alright to eat any amount of it. My eyes were on stalks at the number of people overfilling their plates and it had the effect of making me eat less!

I know! shock
I can't imagine how they get it all into their stomachs!

I couldn't understand how the participants on the show insisted that they ate less than the recommended number of calories per day, they made themselves look a bit silly!
I am overweight but am well aware that, although I eat healthy food, I consume too much of it! I love to graze but I have decided to eat only at mealtimes in the future.

yes wasn't it amazing how could they not know? The cost and shopping.

I am weightwatchers under dr and writing it all down. Admit I miss the odd biscuit, extra yoghurt but I don't buy those things forbidden, they are not in the house.

Yes shysal I am overweight but eat healthily. Never between meals as I have a poor appetite and one crisp would stop me having lunch for hours. I have to have appetising meals or I don't eat. Probably just milk, butter more than the prescribed dash, scrape and of course when out at groups, family, friends...where hard to write it down and memory selective.

I particular remember the male particpant looking at his weeks food consumption and commenting to the effect 'How beige all my food is' (except the week's one portion of veg, some brussel sprouts).

What always puzzles me about all these programmes dealing with large eaters, and the weight loss stories in diet magazines, is how the participants can afford all the food, and the huge amount of alcoholic drink they consume. Most of them seem to be in what are usually described as 'blue collar' jobs, which generally means salaries around the national average or just above. Many, although not those featured last night, have children to feed and provide for.

DH and I are not in straitened circumstances but we work to a carefully controlled budget and do our best to eat well (organic and local) yet I am sure my food bills are far lower than many of those featuring in tv programmes and magazines simply because we eat only at meal times and do not snack in between and our alcohol consumption is way below the government's limits.

I agree when I hear people saying to eat healthily costs too much I wonder how much all this take away food costs and certainly in the volume they seem to consume it.

goldengirl Thu 17-May-12 17:14:19

My DD doesn't do cooking apart from opening the odd can of baked beans or poaching an egg but buys prepared food eg shepherd pie etc that she knows the children will eat [GD is an incredibly fussy eater] and this is apparently working out much cheaper than stressing over preparing food that doesn't get eaten and has to be thrown out. I must say I like preparing food but when the GC come to me there is a fair bit of waste in spite of the small portions I give them but their mother enjoys it!

Ariadne Thu 17-May-12 21:13:02

What was the programme called? Haven't seen it!

Anagram Thu 17-May-12 21:28:02

'Secret Eaters', Ariadne! grin
It was on last night on Channel 4 at 8 p.m. I didn't see it either.

On last nights programme the mother continually put her fingers and food into her mouth while preparing food for the family- yuk- made me feel quite sick!

nanaej Thu 24-May-12 10:27:52

But I thought if you ate it when no-one was looking it was calorie free....grin

shysal Thu 24-May-12 10:31:26

That's what this family thought nanaej. The mother also drank 4 pints followed by several giant rum and cokes whilst cooking and eating!

goose1964 Thu 24-May-12 10:39:32

I didn't see it but suspect I may be one of them

nanaej Thu 24-May-12 10:45:56

Lordy..no wonder she ate so much she was probably too tipsy to remember what she had had already!

glammanana Thu 24-May-12 16:29:39

How do these people afford to buy all this alcohol ? for what you pay for a bottle of Rum you can put together a home cooked meal made from fresh ingredients.

Anagram Thu 24-May-12 16:41:59

Probably more than one meal, glamma! 4 pints! Even if I were still conscious I'd be so bloated I couldn't possibly eat anything - but not the best diet in the world...grin

soop Thu 24-May-12 16:42:10

I could not bring myself to watch such nonsense when on another channel there was mere mention of famine in the Yemin. angry

dorsetpennt Thu 24-May-12 16:45:55

Glammanana I thought the same, also drinking that much every night would explain her fat stomach - her liver must be huge. She may have cooked everything from scratch but such a large amount of it, and most of it 'beige' food. Her veg appeared to be of the boiled to death variety and instead of locking her 'goodie cupboard' from her son, stop buying goodies. How could they not know how they put on all that weight? The daughter was 16 stone and was only 5 foot tall!

Ariadne Fri 25-May-12 09:03:15

Finally caught it on catch up! Incredible, isn't it, that she hadn't connected all thos rum and cokes and cider with weight gain? And the portion sizes were unbelievable - I have to say that I felt positively virtuous.

glammanana Fri 25-May-12 09:13:37

anagram I didn't realise that 4 pints of beer was so expensive now,the last time I had a lager was yrs ago when it was popular for girls to have lager and lime ??
