HappyNanna there is a whole thread on that diet, which I am successfully following, although I do alternate days. See this link - www.gransnet.com/forums/dieting/1193212-Horizon-intermittent-fasting-diet?msgid=24922260
Patricia if you click on the 'Acronyms' box above any thread you will see that DD is dear daughter etc. etc. Welcome to Gransnet, I look forward to your input. I must warn you that it can be addictive!

Went to Slimming World a couple of years ago because was going on a big holiday to Australia. Managed to lose 2 st 4 lbs and was really chuffed. After the holiday went back to old eating habits and put on over a stone. Went back to Slimming World but second time could hardly lose a pound. Gave up. Now trying my friends recommendation after watching a programme on TV - only have 500 calories 1 day a week and the rest of the time eat normally. It certainly works for her, she's lost 11 lbs in a matter of weeks.smile

I too have dieted off and on since I had my first child. I became unable to use people like Weight Watchers as I am allergic to milk and need to cut out wheat as much as poss. However I now go to a weight management class courtesy of the NHS. It aims to change the way you think about things. I find that I am not always thinking about food as before, but just trying at this point to remember to cut down on quantities of certain things - and walk more -. Has anyone else tried these weight management courses?

It took me years of my weight yoyoing to realise in my forties that I could still enjoy what I eat without overeating. I am now 66 and although I have gained about 7lbs since coming off HRT 4 years ago, I still manage to maintain my weight at about 9st 4lbs without denying myself. I think as Frida says, she probably is a lost cause. (I am new to Gransnet and am not sure who dd is, but they don't sound very supportive.)

Different things work for different people but I think diets are a problem as at some point you are going to eat 'normally' and possibly put it back on. I prefer to leave out certain foods, mainly carbs, and now I am in the habit of eating certain foods and not others so I won't need to change when/if I get down to my goal.

I am on the weigh-in thread on GN and it helps me. I also use MFP so I know what I am really eating rather than what I think I am eating and it really shows up where one's weaknesses are.

I believe none of us needs to be a martyr so eat only good things at home but whatever I like when we go out. This normally works but I have just come back from holidaying with people who eat a lot and am getting ready to go to the gym to try and work some of it off! I do think vigorous exercise for those of us able to do so is a great help.

Good luck, enjoy your holiday and join us 'losers' when you return.

When I diet I constantly think about food, what to have, how to prepare,so have devised some basic principles, with cooking methods, and use a smaller plate when not thinking of food,am just normal
Have been doing a bit of comfort eating in last week or so,as I think the weather is getting cooler so will have to reign the impulse in and get back in control, starting work next week will be a big change in my eating especially as I will be doing early morning 6oclock house calls the earlier I am up the hungrier I get so will have to sort out some high energy slow burn, foods around my work, may have to reintroduce some bread into my diet as that is the only thing that seems to stop me being hungry,Ie toast, butter, marmite for breakfast, porridge and cereal make me hungrier and I eat more...we shall see.

frida why not join us losers on the weekly weigh-in thread? You will find it in the diet forums, entitled Monday (date) weigh-in.
We all encourage each other using various methods of weight loss and report our losses (or gains sad) each week.
It is a great focus and I have received tremendous support when downhearted and praise when it goes well.
Glass - our guide and mentor has set us all a challenge to lose 1lb per week between now and Christmas - we could all be all-but a stone lighter at Christmas if it works!
As a team we would like to lose a stone a week!
(14 of us losing 1lb each = a stone!)
Why not have a look and give us a try smile

Calorie counting is the only thing that works for me. It stops me cheating.

anneandgraham Tue 25-Sept-12 20:19:43

what a waste, just thrown a lime pie in the bin from Marks - neither OH or I fancied it ws so sickly !! I defrosted it thinking we would have treat after our curry but not to be!!

have Edam cheese and crackers later, oh and maybe some Philly with sweet chilli my latest craze.

not sure if this is right place to post this!!

johanna Tue 25-Sept-12 19:52:11

merlot
Food intake is so subjective.
What for some people means eating what they want, could equate to a strict
diet for you and I.

janeainsworth Tue 25-Sept-12 19:46:50

MrsJamJam -spot on, count the calories and portion control, and aim to lose weight slowly, with 'normal' food.

shysal Tue 25-Sept-12 19:43:58

On my alternate day diet I can eat what I like every other day, which is a real treat, and am still losing weight. I have tried all the usual methods and thay do work if you stick to them, but for any length of time it is really difficult!

MrsJamJam Tue 25-Sept-12 19:42:25

I have the same problem with becoming obsessed with food if I embark on a 'diet'. Have had some success in the past with a well-known slimming club, but eventually get fed up with their reliance on so-called slimming foods because I would rather eat butter on my toast just once a week than yucky spread every day.

Currently, I am using a website called My Fitness Pal, which is a free calorie counter. OH and I eat proper food as we always have, I am trying to keep my portion sizes small and keep to about 1200 calories a day. I can squeeze in my two glasses of wine (and I am careful not to cheat on size of glass!). I think it will take me a long time to lose the stone I need to lose, but to me it is more important to find a way to eat which does not feel as if I am denying myself or having to eat special diet foods.

Do rather wish that Great British Bake off was not on tv at the moment, as I love baking and what's the point unless someone eats it!

janeainsworth Tue 25-Sept-12 19:40:32

I think it depends what you fancy Frida and why you fancy itsmile
My mum used to say a bit of what you fancy does you good, but I think the operative word was 'bit'smile

merlotgran Tue 25-Sept-12 19:38:55

Some people are really lucky and can eat what they want and not put on weight....I'm not one of them sad

Ana Tue 25-Sept-12 19:33:43

In my dreams......grin

frida Tue 25-Sept-12 19:28:56

Have been on various weight loss diets over the years and have weighed 8st 4lbs at my lowest( following ill health) and am now more than 14st. Recently, not enjoying food since joining well known slimming club but thinking about food constantly. Have you ever just eaten what you fancy, enjoyed it and lost weight over time?
