Latest research - is it telling us what we already know?

Saw in the paper today that there's a new drug for Alzheimers that should be available in the not too distant future [trials looking good]. I think we all worry dreadfully about it, especially when we get to the 'what have I just come upstairs to do?' age.

annodomini Wed 31-Oct-12 17:20:42

crimson, I reached that age in my teens - according to my late mother. grin

I've never been able to make decisions and, if I make myself a sandwich the kitchen looks like the aftermath of a nuclear war. If I drive anywhere I always have to turn left at junctions. If I'm not working [and sometimes if I am] I stay up half the night then sleep most of the day.I sometimes get in the car and wonder where I'm going [or if I'm fully clothed; ie jeans and not jim jams]. I'm not sure that anyone would notice if I started on 'the slippery slope'.

Do you always go round in circles when you drive, crimson?

crimson Wed 31-Oct-12 21:45:56

I spend my whole life going round in ever decreasing circles sad.

Good luck soop, I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday too

Faye Thu 01-Nov-12 04:31:09

Thinking of you soop flowers

crimson Organic Coconut oil is supposed to be the thing for Alzheimer's disease. Eating it is far more interesting than doing those brain exercises.

soop I echo everyone's good wishes. All the very best for the next few days. sunshine

Faye, really! I know it is kindly meant but...The one thing we do know about coconut oil is very high in saturates and therefore not a very good oil to seek out. Bad for the arteries.

Even on this site, which is flogging coconut oil as hard as it can, as the cure for all ills says:

Coconut Oil and Alzheimer's Disease: There are reports of research conducted by Dr. Newport stating that coconut oil is useful for treating Alzheimer's disease. Apart from this there is no scientific evidence or traditional knowledge or coconut oil being used for treating Alzheimer's. It was also not known traditionally that coconut oil helps in the brain function.

This is very very flimsy "evidence" based on the suppositions of one person. In other words it is not evidence at all. The internet is awash with people selling various foods as being good for serious diseases on the basis of no evidence at all. This site is an outrageous example of such marketing.

Sock it to'em Soop, hope all goes well.
jO5 a belated welcome back, really pleased to 'see' you! Was afraid to say too much too soon in case you disappeared again! smile

jO5 Thu 01-Nov-12 09:32:56

Thank you OGM.

No! Don't touch the coconut oil!!! It's a real baddie. (that article is sopersuasive! Must be funded by people who farm coconuts. hmm)

Faye Thu 01-Nov-12 10:22:41

JessM, remember it wasn't long ago that the jury was still out on Vitamin D. We were told Avocados were too high in fat. I said to crimson that Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is supposed to be the thing for Alzheimers, lets hope it is. At least it is healthy and is not an animal based fat which has been proven to be very unhealthy.

Sorry jingle I didn't see you there, welcome back. I had wandered where you had drifted off to, but it is nice to see your posts again. smile

jO5 Thu 01-Nov-12 11:33:48

Thank you Faye. smile

soop Thu 01-Nov-12 11:39:53

Thank you for more kind messages. This afternoon I'm having a hearing test...Tuesday a brain test...and a further "drop-bot" test to be confirmed. Never a dull moment! wink
PS...did I tell you that the last drop-bot investigation was carried out by squeezing mashed potatoe up my rear end. There...bet the thought of that makes you grin

Ana Thu 01-Nov-12 11:57:15

Soop! shock I would have thought they'd have used something a bit more 'scientific'! grin Hope it wasn't hot....

soop Thu 01-Nov-12 12:05:28

Ana Nope, it was cold...and as it was being "piped up" my orrifice, I thought about the advert for Smash [aliens discussing what is done with a potato, and falling about laughing] Sorry for the above spelling. blush

Ana Thu 01-Nov-12 12:16:18

grin I'm surprised you could stop yourself from falling about laughing yourself!

Ana Thu 01-Nov-12 12:17:47

Although, on second thoughts, it would only be your thoughts that were at all funny....not the procedure itself!

soop Thu 01-Nov-12 12:32:30

Ana ...at least it didn't hurt! hmm

crimson Thu 01-Nov-12 12:57:57

soop; I was just thinking about you as I was driving back from work. D'you think that perhaps, with all the house stuff and everything on your mind you might be suffering from stress?

yogagran Thu 01-Nov-12 13:10:27

Excuse my ignorance - but what is a "drop bot"? shock

soop Thu 01-Nov-12 13:11:57

yoga my silly term for prolapsed bowel.
