When I had a recent screening my cholestrol/hdl ratio was 3.5. I think the high cholestrol was about 5.2. and I was told it should be below 4. I understood that the ratio between both types was the important bit and mine is good.
I went straight to the library and grabbed the first book I could find.
www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Cholesterol-Dr-Malcolm-Kendrick/dp/1844546101.
Dr Kendrick suggests that the current guide lines of under 4 is too low and that looking at stats for heart disease and strokes they tend to occur least with levels of around ? 5 to7, and that heart disease and stroke rate increase above and below these levels.
He argues that the very low levels are being pushed by the big Statin manufactures.
It is interesting and there appear to be other books pushing this line.
They are worth a read to get your own perspective. I would certainly not trust the drug companies literature. The tend to be very selective in what figures they choose to promote.
I also worry about the promotion of statins as cure all wonder drugs. they do have some quite serious side effects.
I am jealous of your weight loss though. Well done.
