How do I stop eating cakes

What is the answer to cutting out cakes.

I have high cholesterol among other things and really should not be eating the desserts I do.

There is nothing that can replace the taste of chocolate fudge cake with cream or is there.

Is n't the sugar from fruit - fructose - the one that is particularly bad for you? Seem to remember that from the "sugar" thread a little back.

Sorry, but if it's sweet, it's bad for you. Apparently.

I am thinking the same as Jade, Jeannie. Use healthier recipes for the cakes you enjoy. In the last six months I have drastically decreased the amount of chocolate and sugar I was eating. I now barely eat dairy and don't use it in my cooking and I never eat meat.

Early this year I bought a good quality blender and I now make my own almond milk. Every morning I whip up a smoothie for breakfast with some almond milk, a banana, dates, frozen berries, ice cubes and oats. When making cakes I normally use coconut oil instead of butter, dates and local unprocessed honey instead of sugar, almond meal or coconut flour instead of flour. I have also made my own chocolate using crushed almonds, dates, cacao powder and honey.

There are many healthy recipes and I found this on the Internet by typing in some of the ingredients I prefer to use. Sugar Free Carrot Cake

The last time I ate cake was a couple of weeks ago when we stayed in a farm B&B near Scarborough. It was wonderful to find people who understood that fruit cake should be eaten with cheese, Wensleydale preferably. Having lived in the south for so long I'd forgotten.

Most sweet things are tooooo sweet for my taste. I like the sweetness of e.g. cherries, but most fruits have a different 'taste' of sweetness from anything manufactured.

was it this one purpledaffodil?

Might make a half size one for the weekend! Sounds lovely.

(I love the way Woman magazine put up the tempting cake recipe, and then have "Carol loses 2 stone" and "IDiet" on the side advert hmm)

Rarely make large cakes, find it better to make muffins (white chocolate and raspberry Mmmm!) and then freeze them to avoid temptation. However DD had a big birthday recently so proper cake was needed. Thoroughly recommend Mary Berry's lemon cake with marscapone icing. Well worth the calories! And puréed whole lemons are incorporated so must be some of your five a day there?grin

Most sweet things nowadays taste better frozen - maltesers in particular. But it didn't work with a box of chocolates I was given, they were still vile. They are called 'Thank you' chocolates, in the shape of flowers and look as if they are intended for ten year olds. They are pralines, supposedly. Really sickly.

Cake. Well, I made some this evening because my son is at home and he was complaining about the lack of it. It's far easier not to make cake when there are no 19 year olds wanting it and eating it in front of you and flaunting their skinny tummies. Needless to say, I had to eat a piece to make sure it was ok. Marmalade cake, made with home-made lemon and lime.

Chocolate seems to taste sweeter these days. confused

I brought back a packet of Welsh Cakes from Abergavenny market last week. Put them in the freezer to keep for this weekend. Took them out this afternoon and ate the whole packet straight off - frozen. (delicious!)

I find the opposite. I can easily leave any sweet things alone, remembering that I only had 4 ounces a week and had to walk 2 miles there and back to the next village to get them. They hardly seemed to me to be worth the effort.

I've never liked sweets very much. I don't like the taste - they seem to me to taste too sweet if that makes any sense.

Make healthier recipes for the type of food you crave?
Then you don't have to go without your sweets and the healthy cakes will make you feel full longer.

I've had a box of Jaffa cakes in the larder for months; opened them to give the grandson a few the other day and devoured the rest of the packet last night. Got the munchies and that was it. Can't believe I'm in a 'eat anything that's not screwed to the floor' mode a week before Christmas. Thankfully I can't cook so if I don't buy it I don't eat it. I did try to make some jam tarts the other day but my grandson said they were horrid sad.

I, too, am Spartacus! Retired and bought lovely kitchen equipment to go with my new kitchen and great big range cooker - all farmhouse-y and cosy. Lots of baking, fun making tasty treats with the grandchildren, relaxing meals with friends in the daytime, grazing on home made bread, cakes and pies. Every extra pound has been sheer pleasure! grin

My sympathy, nog50. I have just the same problem. I live alone and if I have sweet stuff in the house - or make a cake - I just eat it. The only answer is not to make it but what a waste of a rather pricey food processor. tchhmm

nog50 Wed 18-Dec-13 09:54:51

When I retired I started baking again, bought a food processor, more tins etc. etc. but then realised that whilst I was enjoying my delicious cakes with each cup of tea/coffee and after each meal I was gradually putting on weight! Why on earth I thought that this wouldn't happen, I don't know! So I just stopped baking and put the equipment away in the cupboard. I agree, Jaffa cakes are a good low calorie treat but you have to be careful not to eat the whole packet at once no matter how tempting! My only problem now is that I have wrapped chocolate biscuits in a tin for my grandchildren and do dip into them sometimes! tchhmm

Oh! Lots of sympathy for this one! I love making cakes but now do it when I know I can share them and not have them tempting me from their tins!

Someone mentioned intermittent fasting and when I've done it it really helps with my health and weight loss, even though I do have cake on some of my feast days and I think I value them even more
I have also started drinking green smoothies and on the days when I have them I am not tempted by sweet things.

I've just read a book a friend recommended and this explains why this works in curbing the sweet tooth.... It's called the 5.2 diet meets the green smoothie a perfect match! I saw that it's free in the uk today. It's on amazon... Good lucksmile

I love making cakes and biscuits as a hobby, I enjoy the visual result more than the eating!. Half of them go to DS family. The rest DH eats. I only have any on non 5:2 diet days. Usually there's not a lot left for me.x

Don't make or buy any cakes. Ban them from the house!

No, not up to 'Beowulf', just reading bits from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. I like the idea of 'visiting' someone in another time and talking to them, which is the way Matt Love's book is written. It's illustrated, in colour, which all makes it more user-friendly - a bit like an Old English 'Janet and John'.

Galen Fri 24-May-13 12:28:22

No. Obese
