We can exchange recipes and ideas and encourage each other when the going gets tough!

It was yummy and very quick and easy. I made the onion jam in advance.

janerowena Sat 18-Apr-15 22:56:15

Merlot that looks lovely.

janerowena Sat 18-Apr-15 22:55:53

I should probably get one for DBH, he likes big tomatoes and I like cherry ones. He is always leaving tomato halves in the fridge and forgetting to use them.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 18-Apr-15 14:59:24

Thanks janer! I am getting the tomato one. smile

Saw this on Saturday Kitchen this morning so I thought I'd adapt it because I've just made some beefburgers. The onion jam should be OK because we're increasing carbs just a little due to long hours working outside now that our energy levels are on the up.

I have ricotta in the fridge so I won't be messing about with milk, lemon juice and a muslin. hmm

I just bought a lidless one, thanks jings. I have a splatter guard, so don't mind not having an 'oink'! I looked them up and it seems that you can buy all their stuff over here except the lidded trays, for some reason. They also do a very nice little bacon keeper thing that I think I shall buy.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them out - I hadn't thought of using my griddle pan either!

janeainsworth Fri 17-Apr-15 21:53:36

loopy you need thin-cut bacon, and a heavy frying pan.
I start it off with a bit of olive oil heated first, but you don't need a lot as the fat will run out of the bacon especially if it's streaky.

I've got one without a lid. It doesn't work properly with all bacon and does make a bit of a mess in the microwave. Bit of a hit and miss affair so I seldom bother - don't know why I keep it! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:33:35

So. Not si

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:32:47

it's like this but it's a nice shade of pink

Lakeland do similar but their's hasn't got a lid, si I think it would be messy.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:27:38

I have got this thing called an Oink. I bought it somewhere foreign. It's flat with ridges and you put the bacon rashers on it and put on the lid. Then microwave it for a bit longer than a minute per rasher. It goes lovely and crispy. I don't think you can fry bacon crisp these days.

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:22:30

I grilled mine and forgot it was there. grin I was out in the garden clearing up painting stuff. It worked beautifully. It was just cheap back bacon. I don't like smoked.

loopylou Fri 17-Apr-15 21:17:46

On the subject of bacon can anyone tell me the best way to get crispy bacon? Does it depend on type/cut/smoked/unsmoked etc?
I fail abysmally whether I grill or fry......

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:12:35

It probably was ages - you said, just cut calories. I used to be able to. If you could only hear the deep sighs at the mere thought of a hot cross bun... No, make that sobs...

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Apr-15 21:11:02

Pardon? confused. Is that in response to something I said ages ago? If it is, I've forgotten it.

I have just eaten my second hot cross bun of the evening, so don't talk to me about cutting calories. I think I've given up. hmm

janerowena Fri 17-Apr-15 21:04:57

Bacon and I are now re-acquainted. I went off it because DBH likes his practically raw and I like it well-cooked. He kept making me cooked breakfasts swimming in bacon fat and it made me feel ill.

jings if I could move around better during the winter, I would just cut calories, as I used to. When you do that and it no longer works, because you can barely move during the winter months, the only option left is to eat even fewer calories but make every calorie count and be extremely nutritious, and eat as wide a range of foods as you can within those limits.

I love bacon! We always bring it back from England with us, though poitrine fumée is an almost acceptable alternative when we run out.
Tonight we are having saltimbocca; veal, sage, ham and mozarella, layered and pan-fried. With it I am doing an oven-baked dish of sliced courgettes, onions, garlic, tomatoes and asparagus, layered with olive oil and herbs.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 16-Apr-15 20:12:34

grin

merlotgran Thu 16-Apr-15 20:09:06

I had a bacon and mushroom sarnie for breakfast this morning......without the bread grin

merlotgran Thu 16-Apr-15 20:08:08

That's why we love it, jingl

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 16-Apr-15 20:04:17

I don't understand about the bacon. There are no carbs in bacon, surely?

janerowena Thu 16-Apr-15 17:43:09

Anya, you must be a mind-reader, I bought bacon today for that very reason! I'm not usually a big fan of bacon, but do like it crunchy in salads.

Anya Thu 16-Apr-15 17:24:47

Low carb does not mean no carbs hmm sigh.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 16-Apr-15 15:44:38

A marmalade sandwich bucked me up no end this morning.
