Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

It's been a funny old day. I went to a coffee and hot cross bun Easter thingy at the Church. I did NOT have a bun, but some people thought it amusing to waft a few under my nose.
Still I managed..

shysal Wed 16-Mar-16 16:46:14

MM suggests doing it as a 5:2, but it would be slower, so I am giving alternate days a try, eating low carb all the time. I need to cut down my portions on the 'eating' days.

Anya Wed 16-Mar-16 13:02:46

Shysal I shouldn't think that would work...alternate days I mean. It's just not that sort of diet.

Anya Wed 16-Mar-16 13:01:14

Good on you BB smile

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 16-Mar-16 09:58:58

Well done BB flowers

BBbevan Wed 16-Mar-16 08:54:23

This has been quite easy really, Shysal.Still a way to go yet. I absolutely refuse to have diabetes

shysal Wed 16-Mar-16 08:48:13

Brilliant BB! I think I should try being a bit stricter, lost nothing over last week or so. I have been doing low calorie on alternate days.

BBbevan Wed 16-Mar-16 08:17:02

Taken just on 3 weeks , a la Dr. Mosley. I have not felt hungry at all and feel really good in myself.

Mamie Wed 16-Mar-16 07:27:50

Brilliant! How long has that taken? Are you stricly Michael Mosleying?

BBbevan Wed 16-Mar-16 07:07:27

Can't do kg. so haif a stone down this morning . Hurrah!!!!!! grin

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Mar-16 11:57:20

Neither of us like them Anya. smile

Anya Tue 15-Mar-16 06:56:42

Why do you leave the peppers out Wilma?

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 14-Mar-16 21:08:14

This is the Skahshuka recipe I used, leaving out the peppers. Will do it again soon, so thanks Mamie for the reminder. flowers

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 14-Mar-16 21:03:56

Shakshuka is one of the first successful dishes I made when I started LCHF, although it was a different recipe. Lots of variations are around and it works well for us because we like tomato based sauces - not the peppers though! grin

Mamie Mon 14-Mar-16 17:27:34

He didn't put the sugar in and it didn't need it.

Mamie Mon 14-Mar-16 17:26:20

OH has just cooked Shakshuka for supper. Absolutely delicious. It is basically a vegetarian recipe, but he added chorizo.

Thank you everyone. I will plan an afternoon tea for one day in the future. We have got Easter to negotiate next. I made two Simnel cakes yesterday , for my son and daughter and didn't lick the spoon once.

Riverwalk Mon 14-Mar-16 08:11:55

As it's a tea and presumably in between your lunch and dinner you won't go hungry so you'll just have to eat the minimum to be sociable and drink plenty of tea!

Afternoon tea - all those sarnies and cakes, a nightmare for us low-carbies!

shysal Mon 14-Mar-16 07:31:36

BBbevan, I buy Pork Crunch which are lighter puffed-up scratchings with no hairs and kinder to the teeth. At 120 calories a packet they are a good low carb alternative to crisps. I buy them at my local Co-op.

I suggest you fill up before you go to the meal, then eat the bare minimum while you are there. Would you be reluctant to just explain about the diet?

BBbevan Sun 13-Mar-16 20:01:22

I can't Anya. It's at a restaurant.Can you imagine?

Anya Sun 13-Mar-16 19:36:56

BB perhaps take along something that you've made yourself as an offering...a quiche perhaps. And just do the best you can re eating high carb food.

BBbevan Sun 13-Mar-16 18:40:08

Pork scratchings. A whole different meaning [ grin]

BBbevan Sun 13-Mar-16 18:38:23

I don't like pork scratching I'm sure they have hairy bits on them.
I think I agree with Lazigirl. I will eat what I can and not make a fuss about it.

Lazigirl Sun 13-Mar-16 16:43:02

I am on the 8-week diet and went to meal at friends the other night and ate what they gave me. Had smaller portions of carb rich food and v small pud, but wouldn't dream of saying I couldn't eat something. It seems rude when they have gone to trouble of cooking, and it's only one day after all.

shysal Sun 13-Mar-16 16:27:56

Take a bag of pork scratchings? grin
