A new low-carb support thread for 2016

Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.

You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Well I got it all wrong for dinner this evening. Temperature in mid 30s and we are supposed to be having roast lamb. I'll pretend we are in Greece and make it minty and yogurty smile

Mamie thanks for that info...now those I can manage. I've organised a family BBQ for Tuesday so I'm going to put those on the menu.

The recipe is soaked dried figs Anya. I think fresh ones would collapse.

Very disappointed as too poorly to go into Leamington to only shop likely to have fresh figs for fig and duck kebabs, which is a shames as OH has just finished building a brick BBQ. Ah well, there's always tomorrow,

Sounds delicious - no raspberries here yet, but the cherries are wonderful.
We have chillies growing too and the espelette peppers from SW France.
Cathy, don't know if you picked it up from the thread, but OH got out of pre-diabetes and has stayed out for over a year now, on this diet. It does work!

Mamie, it the BBQ tonight, chicken something, DH invention, with chillies from the garden, I may be even hotter! Then homemade raspberry ice cream, we finished up the cheesecake last night.

Welcome, this is a great thread for lots of support and advice and answering questions. Low carb is so easy, I have been on LCHF since April and so far have lost just over 2 stone, only two more to go. I never feel hungry and lots of energy, sleeping better too, in spite of night temperatures of 30 degrees centigrade outside, thank heavens for air conditioning.

Must dash need a dip in the swimming pool it is 40 degrees, the ironing will have to wait.

Hello everyone

I am so glad I was directed to this thread, so interesting. I am Pre Diabetic and am in a bit of a panic. Read Michael Moselys book, looked at the Diabetes UK site and feel a bit overwhelmed. Low carb seems the way to go.

I know I have to cut down the amount of fruit I eat. I also have a bit of an addiction to Nakd bars. Especially the pressed dates and cashew nut ones!

Cauliflower rice/mash has been a revelation to me. So..onwards and upwards..hopefully.

Yes, I thought of that then I remembered Id be left with half a bottle of brandy just saying 'DRINK ME' like something from Alice in Wonderland.

BB here's a link to a GP I know personally who has researched the effect of LC on his diabetic patients. You might want to print out a copy just in case???

It is delicious*Anya*. We marinate the dried figs in brandy but I guess apple juice would do. Cut the duck into pieces and thread on the skewer with the figs. Very simple but delicious.

I have been trying for 3 weeks to get figs. Nothing in M&S, Tesco or Sainsburys. I will try St.Albans market on Saturday. Don't know where they have gone.
First Diabetic Clinic at GPs next week, so that should interesting. Lots of people on the Diabetes forum have been told off for following the LCHF diet. I hope my GP is a bit more open minded!

Morning all. Hope everyone is still doing well?
Had my six month check-up yesterday and BP fine after six months completely off the tablets.
Can't keep up with the no alcohol group because this is the time of year when everyone drops in for an apero and we actually get to sit on our terrace with a glass of wine like wot they do in A Place in the Sun. grin
Bastille Day today so we will have a duck and fig kebab barbie with the first of our green beans in a salad.
Salads galore for lunches and too many cherries, melons and strawberries for a strict low-carb diet, but weight is stable apart from fluid retention in the heat....

Anya, so sorry to hear about your sister. I gave up alcohol 4 months ago, just to cut down the carbs really and to be honest I don't miss it. I will probably keep 'dry' for the foreseeable future as I am sleeping much better and some of the occasional night and day 'hot moments' have lessened. These have been going on for 10 years now so any relief is good.

On another note:
I have found a low carb bread in my local (Cyprus) supermarket which is scrummy, rather like German black seeded bread. Only 3.8 carb grams per slice, but have tried to find a supplier in UK as we are there soon for a few months. Called Mestermacher Protein Bread. Tried Amazon they do this brand but not this particular one. Any one any ideas?
