Thought we needed a shiny new thread for the New Year.
The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.
Here is a link to the Mumsnet low-carb bootcamp thread, for those who want to lose weight more quickly than the diet adopted by most people on the existing Gransnet thread.

Here is a link to the original Gransnet thread - though there is absolutely no need to plough through it before you start. grin

Can understand your reasoning Anya sad situation. Keep going.

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 20:11:52

If only Lazigirl smile

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 20:10:59

My younger sister died last year at only 66 from breast cancer. She was a heavy drinker and this was doubtless a contributory factor. I've done a couple of dry months since, but decided to go for a longer challenge this time.

NanKate Wed 06-Jul-16 20:04:24

Thank you Lazigirl for the yogurt info.

I shall put the 4 September in my diary * Anya* to celebrate you returning to the bottle. grin. What was your reasoning behind going on the wagon or was it purely a carbs/sugar reduction ?

Lazigirl Wed 06-Jul-16 13:25:27

You'll have lost the taste by then.......

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 13:02:34

Roll on September 4th wine

Lazigirl Wed 06-Jul-16 13:00:48

Anya You are a very strong woman considering all the political excitement! Maximum respect. I am off the beer - but on the white wine! Well it does have less carbs. smile

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 12:42:28

Day 41/100 alcohol challenge smile

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 12:41:47

Good grin

BBbevan Wed 06-Jul-16 12:37:57

Oh, he eats anything. Too much veg makes his stomach gurgle so we will leave it there.
But thanks for asking Anya grin

Lazigirl Wed 06-Jul-16 12:36:25

I don't think you can freeze it. Even used next day out of fridge it smells a bit, think it must be enzymes or something working, but tastes ok. Wouldn't keep it longer. May be you can cook and freeze. Sure someone will know?

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 12:35:31

I'm guessing raw cauli doesn't freeze well???? hmm

PS is DH all right after eating it?

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 12:34:20

I only rice what I'm going to use. I leave the rest of the cauli festering in the veg rack until needed.

BBbevan Wed 06-Jul-16 12:31:14

Can anyone tell me what went wrong?

Last week I bought a very large cauliflower. I blitzed it in the food processor to make cauliflower rice. We ate half that evening. The rest, uncooked I put in the freezer. I took it out to use yesterday. It was wet and mushy.I did cook it but it tasted medicinal. Although DH ate it it was not very nice.
Any ideas gratefully received

Lazigirl Wed 06-Jul-16 11:22:47

Nankate I noticed the carb difference when buying natural yoghurts in Tesco. Reason being that all milk contains naturally occurring sugar, ie lactose. Greek yoghurts seem to have less.

NanKate Wed 06-Jul-16 06:19:10

Thanks BB will try the Greek full fat Total. It's such a turn around being able to eat food containing full fat after years of low fat. I have read the reasoning behind it and am happy to give it a go.

BBbevan Wed 06-Jul-16 04:36:58

Greek full fat Total, is my favourite. Sainsburys do a passable one also.

NanKate Tue 05-Jul-16 22:16:03

Yogurt info needed now please. Now I no longer eat low fat high sugar yogurts can anyone recommend their favourite yogurt ? I am happy to throw in some fruit and nuts.

I bought a delicious Yeo Valley Natural Bio yog today but on looking on the side I see the carbs are 6.9 per 100 g (of which sugars are 6.9g) so I think I should look for something else.

There is a fish and chip van that comes once a week to a café about 10km away. Never tried it though.
The French have got as far as "Drive" shops, where you order on line and drive to a warehouse next to the supermarket to fetch it yourself or you can drive to the smaller shops, choose your produce and they deliver it.
Why you would want to do either of these things, I know not. grin

Lazigirl Tue 05-Jul-16 15:53:53

Darren in the Cabbage van? grin There's a business opportunity on your return Mamie, hawking produce to the lazy elderly and infirm in your neighbourhood. Or you could flog "exotic" English stuff ie marmite and call it the Rosbif van??

Mamie Tue 05-Jul-16 08:35:38

Not keen on chestnuts, me.
Am in the UK so lots of foodie temptation around but managing quite well. Monkfish with chorizo coming with Darren in the Cabbage van today. Such luxury.... Wonder if France will ever get as far as Internet shopping...

BBbevan Mon 04-Jul-16 15:51:29

I suppose mine are out Anya sigh

Anya Mon 04-Jul-16 15:22:32

One or two...no problem NK

BBbevan Mon 04-Jul-16 12:06:14

Marron Glacé Hmmmm.envy

NanKate Mon 04-Jul-16 11:14:31

I suspected that they could be high in carbs Anya I think I will give them a miss, other than with my Christmas dinner. We put them in with the sprouts and I thoroughly enjoy munching on one or two.
