Low-carb support thread 2016 Part 2

The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Good luck with the move BB. Hope the arms continue to get better Anya. Are you having physio?
Good luck singlegranny, let us know how you get on.
We had scrambled eggs and mushrooms on smoked salmon for lunch and have big tagine ready for tonight.
The processing of the garden produce is over now and we are busy with hedge cutting and lumberjack duties. grin

BBbevan Tue 01-Nov-16 14:48:14

Good lucksinglegrannie

Anya I had a bad fall exactly two years ago. I damaged my shoulder and it still is not right. Knitting can only be done in small snatches. The DR said it was like a rugby injury ha ha

Anya Tue 01-Nov-16 14:56:15

Yes, good luck with the move BB and try not to launch any more flying tackles.

Mamie I paid for two private physio session while waiting for the NHS to kick in and these made a huge difference especially to the left arm, which is the weak one still.

Then had two totally uselrss NHS sessions. Absolute waste of my time. So booked a couple more private physio slots starting again next week.

Mamie Tue 01-Nov-16 15:13:36

Physio (kiné) is one of the amazing bits of the French health service. OH has had various joint problems and the doctor just signs him up for 15 sessions. He pops round the corner to the physio and books in to start straight away. He then has six or seven weeks to get to know a new group of friends. grin

I bought a pack of smoked mackerel to make a Mary Berry pate, which I am enjoying, but have one fillet left. Any suggestions for a quick LC meal for one?

BBbevan Thu 03-Nov-16 09:50:48

I would just eat it on its own with some salad

Lazigirl Thu 03-Nov-16 20:35:00

Hope move goes ok BB. How come you've got time to post and not up to eyes in packing cases?

BBbevan Fri 04-Nov-16 05:58:25

Thank you Lazigirl Most of the packing is done now. Lawn was cut yesterday. We just have one mug, one plate etc.each left out. Freezer nearly empty, but we are still managing LCHF. My DD has started it and has lost over a stone so far so we shall be fine when we move in with her for a while.

Reason I have time to post? DH is a super packer and organiser grin

Singlegrannie Fri 04-Nov-16 16:55:10

Seen doc for blood test results. B!ood sugar 6.9 , kidney function excellent, BMI 23, blood pressure excellent, cholesterol up to 5.9
Not reversed type 2 yret. Will keep trying . Doc seemed to think cutting carbs is a good idea.

Mamie Fri 04-Nov-16 17:02:42

Sounds like reasonable progress though Singlegrannie.
Well done this far. Keep on keeping on. grin

BBbevan Fri 04-Nov-16 18:39:37

Don't worry Singlegrannie You are well on the way to reversing your diabetes. Well done

BBbevan Mon 07-Nov-16 05:45:31

Moving today and broadband is not good in S W Wales so may struggle to post. Hope all goes well with everyone and I will try my best to keep in touch

Mamie Mon 07-Nov-16 05:56:10

Best of luck BB. Hope all goes well. We got very excited last week when our broadband speed went from 1.8 to 2.4 mbps. Rural living eh?
Bon courage and pob lwc. grin

Anya Mon 07-Nov-16 06:45:50

Too late I know shysal but perhaps for next time. Left over smoked mackerel with tomatoes and horseradish. Yummy.

singlegran keep it up. Great to hear you had a GP who's up to date. Re you cholesterol, you need to ask about your ratio of 'good' to 'bad' cholesterol.

BB best of luck with the move. Even if you have to climb up a local mountain hill do try to stay in touch.

Wow Mamie!!!grin

shysal Mon 07-Nov-16 07:52:03

Hope the move goes well BB. Good luck with the broadband.

BBbevan Sat 12-Nov-16 04:07:58

Broadband works if you sit under the stairs or use a kindle!
Move went very smoothly and we are now looking at houses. I have taken over most of the cooking as DD and her DH are at work all day and they now get a decent meal in the evening.
Hope everyone is fine ?

Anya Sat 12-Nov-16 07:26:17

grin visualising you sitting there now posting.

Glad the move went well smile

shysal Sat 12-Nov-16 09:04:24

If you are like my DD you will check broadband and mobile signals when looking at houses. When I moved it meant taking a compass as I love a sunny garden!

This may be of interest to you on this thread.
In Australia, an orthopaedic surgeon who advises patients of the benefits of the LCHF diet has been ordered to stop doing so, and told that he is not qualified to advise patients, even though many orthopaedic patients present with obesity or diabetes........

Tegan Sun 13-Nov-16 15:28:10

Still not eating bread and, for the first time, probably in my life, I've maintained the same weight for over 3 months, even though I sometimes feel I am eating too much. I hope I can stick to it.

shysal Sun 13-Nov-16 16:35:25

Amazing janeainsworth! So if the benefits are proven in the future he is still silenced for the rest of his life!!!

janeainsworth Sun 13-Nov-16 16:38:23

Yes it's shocking Shysal. Another doctor (Tim Noakes)has been on trial in South Africa for similar things apparently.

Anya Sun 13-Nov-16 17:23:49

Vested interests.....!

Candlefran Sun 13-Nov-16 17:32:45

I can see where they're coming from. An orthopaedic surgeon isn't a qualifited nutritionist. What if he gave out completely duff advice? Surely he could advise his patients to lose weight, without going into dietary specifics. Orhe could recommend a good dietician to help with the weight loss. They have to stay within their remit.

Candlefran Sun 13-Nov-16 17:34:24

He could always study dietary things and get properly qualified.
